Title: Pride is Over-Rated

Summary: A boy wipes out on his skateboard on the side of a road. Short, slice-of-life-ish. Based on real events.

The two girls were jolted out of their conversation by the sound of wheels getting caught on one of the many rocks left over from construction on the new houses alongside the road. They looked forward just in time to see one of their schoolmates fall off his skateboard with a short yell. Their eyes widened and Allison’s hand flew to her mouth in shock.

“Oh my gosh, are you okay?!”

The girls walked quickly over to where the teenage boy had crashed. The board had gone out into the street and the boy was just lying face down on the ground, not moving.

Allison stood over him while her friend, Camille, cautiously got his skateboard, which had rolled to the median strip. The boy was obviously breathing, and appeared to be unhurt, but still wouldn’t get up. Camille came back with the board, jumping a bit when a car honked at her for being in the road.

“That was a pretty bad wipe-out, are you hurt?”

The boy stayed on the ground; arms and legs spread out on the ground passively. He gave a short laugh and answered out of the squashed side of his mouth with a surprisingly clear voice, drenched in self-pity,

“Just my pride.”

The two girls stood above him, not really know whether to laugh or still look concerned.
