This is an assignment for my course that I found rather interesting. We were supposed to practice writing 'dialogues' and in this particular case, about our parent's first date/proposal/meeting. In this case, I chose date. Hope you all like it. =)
Disclaimer: This writing is purely a work of fiction. Any resemblance to my Mum or Dad, or their actual first date is purely coincidental. Mum, that means if you read it you’re not supposed to be offended. =)
“Well,” said Kwee, as they walked out of the park, “that went well.” He ran his hands over his soaked hair, letting it form back into its usual messy cut.
“WHAT?!” screamed Hamiza ‘Dot’ Shariff at her boyfriend-my would be father-furiously. “How did it go well in ANY way?! The rides were closed-”
“Because it rained.”
“I’m soaked.”
“Because it rained.”
“My pie was ruined-”
“They held a pie eating contest in the middle of an open field park, so that’s to be expected…since it rained…”
Dot groaned, clearly agitated by her boyfriend’s carefree attitude. “You’re so aggravating.”
“And you look very pretty, dear.” Kwee grinned back mischievously. Then he sniffed her soaked dress. “But you stink.”
She blushed for a moment, before her look of cute embarrassment turned into red faced anger. “That’s because I was mugged!”
“Almost mugged,” corrected her boyfriend annoyingly. “Actually more like robbed, but…”
She smacked the back of his head, earning an ‘oww’ of protest. Sighing, she folded her arms and sulked, looking away from him. “Don’t you care for me?” she mumbled.
Kwee shrugged. “I’m a bit more concerned about how you managed to tackle a 300 pound man…’
“Well, he deserved what he got,” she pouted, sulking again. He laughed a little, a throaty laugh. The sound of his laugh made her want to laugh also…she couldn’t deny it made her happy, but she refused to give in.
“Not only that,” she complained, continuing her rant, “there were a bunch of garbage bags near the bin where I tackled him, remember? Face first into a pile of vomit and chicken bones. And when I finally manage to armlock him, he spits on me!”
“Oh,” said Kwee. “So that’s the glob of something stuck in your hair.”
“No, he spit on my dress. There’s something in my hair?”
Kwee’s eyes widened momentarily before blinking rapidly. “No, I was just kidding,” he said quickly. Dot stared at him confusedly, and he laughed.
“Come with me, I want to show you something.”
“Wow,” whispered Dot in awe. “It’s beautiful.”
“I used to come here a lot after school. It was my favorite spot,” Kwee explained, as Dot continued to be mesmerized by the beauty of the view. “Just after it rains, the rainbow envelopes the sunset. Sort of like twin bridges. The colors are amazing.”
“They really are.”
Kwee looked at his girlfriend’s reaction to his spot in the park with a lighthearted feeling of triumph in his heart. Finally, something that had gone right on this date-at least, what she qualified as ‘having gone right.’ Looking at her reaction…the way her small black eyes turned soft and expectant, with the narrowest hint of a smile on her face…she looked so unlike her usual self, so feminine.
So beautiful.
“Kwee, you alright?” she asked, snapping him out of his reverie. He blinked, and then laughed.
“Yeah, I was just thinking.” He walked her to the edge, taking her hand and holding it tightly, with her squeezing back. “I’m sorry this date was such a disaster for you. I really didn’t want things to turn out this way,” he admitted. He had been laughing his head off at the way things had gone wrong, but she had looked so upset.
“I wanted you to enjoy yourself, you know?”
“I did enjoy myself,” she said. This time, she was the one laughing. “I know I was pretty upset with the way things went wrong so often, but the truth is…looking back, it was actually kind of funny.”
Her face turned slightly pink. “And well, I got to spend the day with…you.”
Kwee’s face turned red as well. “I feel the same.”
The sunset dawned on the couple. Birds chirped happily, the air was crisp and cool, and the setting was beautiful…almost cinematic.
It was perfect.
Kwee leaned down, and kissed her for the first time.
It wasn’t to be the last.
