A/N: IMPORTANT! This is the sequel to Once Upon a Library, which is also by me and can be found in my stories list. I suggest reading it before reading this, please!
Also, this contains both slash (male/male) and femslash (female/female). If you dislike one or the other, I don’t suggest reading unless you want to give it a try.
Otherwise, this is mostly cheesy with an attempt at humor. It’s cute, it’s short, and it’s got musicians (so it’s kind of a bandslash). If you like it, please review! Thanks!
Monday Night
It was Monday night, and right now I was at the Galen Town Library getting ready for the night’s show there.
Despite being a Monday, I suppose the day hadn’t gone that badly. I’d woken up, gone to band practice, and then eaten lunch with the band. Well, the band and Jack. Since Tom had founded this band, and therefore pretty much lived with the band, that meant Jack pretty much lived with us as well.
Not that I minded. Jack was nice, if not quiet, and pretty good looking. Of course, he was dating Tom, so he was ‘off-limits’, but I wasn’t interested in him like that. My thoughts were solely for the man next to me.
Nathan Cole. I sneaked a glance at him as I took out my guitar. My boyfriend of at least five years, and the bassist for Our Small Band.
Yes, that is what our band is called. Shut up, Tom named us.
Speaking of the devil, Tom just walked in carrying a large clipboard. “Okay, everyone. The line up for tonight is… You guys aren’t ready yet? Are you trying to kill me?”
I laughed and turned to Tom. “Calm down, we’re almost done”. I motioned to the only female member of the band, our lead singer. “Lissie had to park way down the street ‘cause of all the cars. Looks like it’s a full house tonight.”
Tom practically beamed. “I know, isn’t it great?! Jack’s sure to have at least some customers!”
Nathan came up beside me, and I turned to help him adjust his strap. “I thought the whole reason we were doing this was to bring attention to our music, not to books.” I pinched him, and he jumped. “Ouch, Sammie, don’t do that.”
“Well, you should watch your mouth. I know Tom is repulsively lovesick and all that, but we can at least support him.” I licked my hand and used it to straighten Nathan’s hair, which was a glorious raven black jetted with green. He grimaced, but allowed me to continue.
Since Tom was our manager, and also the best drummer we’d had in a while, he had convinced us to get our hair dyed like his. Lissie’s was a shocking hot pink, and since I was her twin brother, that apparently meant that I needed pink hair as well. Thankfully I had been allowed to get a much quieter shade of pink, and most of my thick brown hair showed through anyways.
“I heard that comment, Sammie.” We all turned to greet Jack. For all that we tolerated Tom, Jack was always a joy to have around. Why the two of them were a couple was beyond me. They were complete opposites: Tom was loud and bright with his fluorescent purple hair, and Jack was quiet and mousy-looking (though still cute).
“It’s true,” I defended myself. “Look at the way he’s looking at you now. Disgusting.”
We all smiled, though, when Tom reached over to peck Jack on the lips. Quite the sight we were, four guys and a girl, not one of us straight.
Speaking of which… “Lissie, is Julia coming tonight?”
My twin frowned slightly. “No. She was working late today.”
I sighed and shared a look with Nathan. Lissie had been running into a few bumps in her relationship, and I wished I could help her. Before I could say anything, though, Nathan squeezed my hand gently.
“Time to start the show,” he said before giving me a quick kiss on the lips and going over the line up of songs with me. I smiled gratefully at him and finished tuning my guitar.
We made our way through the night playing a mix of classic songs and ones we made ourselves. The crowd cheered the whole way through, and I thought I saw more than one person use the noise as an excuse to check out a book without being seen or, as a result, mocked.
When it was over we went into the crowd to shake hands with some of our fans. We had only been doing this for a month or two, but already it had gotten Jack more customers than he had ever hoped for.
I laughed at something Nathan said, and watched as Tom made his way through the crowd towards Jack. We both rolled our eyes. Honestly, that man was hopeless when it came to the librarian. The two of them were so blatantly in love it’s no wonder they never tried to hide it.
Of course, Nathan and I had never hid our love either. I smiled up at him as we walked towards the curtain. Lissie had stepped behind there to grab something quickly, and I wondered briefly what was taking her so long.
Voices were what halted me. One was Lissie’s melodious voice, but the other was softer.
“Julia?” Nathan mouthed when I pulled him to a stop as well. I shrugged and tried to listen harder.
Lissie’s voice was the first I made out. “What are you doing here? I thought you had to work?”
Work… that meant the other voice definitely belonged to Julia. “I wanted to surprise you. I… I have to ask you something.”
I raised an eyebrow at that remark, but didn’t say anything.
“Okay, you can ask me anything you want.”
“W-Well, I mean, we’ve been going out for almost a year.”
“Yeah…”
“And, well, you’re still living with your brother. And since he’s living with his boyfriend, shouldn’t you, I don’t know…”
“Are you asking me to move in with you, Julia?”
“Y-Yes. What do you say?”
I smiled at Lissie’s joyful answer of ‘Yes!’, and interlocked fingers with Nathan. Lissie had been living with us for almost three years, ever since I had moved in with Nathan. It had never really been a bother to us, but we were both glad she finally had someone to share a place with that she cared about as well.
“Are you happy?” Nathan asked me once we were out of earshot from the curtain.
“Yes. I think she and Julia will stay together for a while, don’t you?”
Nathan nodded silently, bringing my hand up to his face and kissing the knuckles. The gesture made me blush.
“Tell me, Sammie. How long have we been together?”
“Five years and four months.”
“That’s kind of a long time…”
“If you’re breaking up with me, I swear I’ll-” Nathan cut me off with a long kiss. His tongue slipped through my lips, and I groaned, trying to sound angry.
“Don’t worry, Sammie-dear. I’m never going to let you go.”
I let out an angry ‘humph’. “Don’t you dare scare me like that again. And don’t call me ‘Sammie-dear’. Why were you asking, anyway?”
“I was just thinking that, if we could stay together that long, then so can they. I mean, we aren’t exactly soul mates.”
“Yes we are.”
Nathan kissed me again, more soundly, before pulling me out the door and into the cold night air. I shivered, both from the change in temperature and the kiss. “Fine, then we are soul mates. I was just thinking that we sometimes fight a lot, even though we always make up, and that if we can stay together for five years and four months than so can other people who fight sometimes.”
I giggled… no, laughed. I don’t giggle. “You know, I wasn’t really following that. I was too busy looking at your eyes. They sparkle in the moonlight, you know.”
“This is no time to wax poetic, love. I have to say, though, with Lissie gone we’ll have a lot more alone time.” He grinned and waggled an eyebrow at me.
“Is sex always on your mind, Nathan?” I asked before slinging my bag onto my shoulder and walking towards the library steps. He trailed after me, and I barely heard his answer as we linked hands again and headed to our car.
“Only if it’s with you.”
I squeezed his hand sharply, but inwardly I was glowing. Because even with a cheesy ending like this, it was probably the best Monday night of my life.
