Differences

We may look the same, act the same, and sometimes do things the same way but it doesn’t make us the same person. We’re twins, not copies of one person. We feel things differently, we like different things, different people. We are different from each other. One of us may be more of a tomboy while the other is more of a chick flick.

Since forever we have always been treated like the same person. Sometimes we even go through this with our own parents. Why doesn’t anyone seem to understand? Is it really that hard? We are two people, not one in the same. So don’t treat us as such.

We sighed softly then looked to each other and laughed. Sure we did things together, sometimes it was as if we could read minds, but it isn’t that strange. We do the same thing with some of our best friends and no one calls us twins then. The two of us were just really close, most twins are. There’s nothing wrong with that is there?

I gave a giggle as I ran up to shop and looked in the window at a beautiful dress. Sister just gave me a look. She thought I was crazy for liking this kind of thing so much. I just did though; it was one of the things that made us different. I often thought she was crazy for wearing pants all the time though.

We smiled though and walked away. We weren’t going to go shopping today, we were just going to hang out and get some lunch. That was the original plan anyways. We rarely ever stayed within the original plans set.

We walked through the streets talking to each other happily. Once in a while we would get a curious look or a whisper. In a way we were used to it but at the same time we thought it was rude. We understood that twins were a bit rare, but didn’t their parents ever teach them that it was incredibly rude to just stare like that? We assumed they didn’t know any better though, that, or they just didn’t care.

Thinking about it, we had the same problem in school too. Sometimes the teachers even had us confused. The two of us had completely different styles of walking talking and dressing but they still had a hard time telling the difference. It was a bit insulting. To make matters worse, if the teacher did make a mistake on who was who and we corrected them then they would get mad. We still don’t understand that one.

Our friends just tell us to get over it and ignore them, but it’s hard sometimes. What makes it harder is when it happens almost everywhere you go. It’s just frustrating.

I guess there is one good thing about it. When one of us makes a new friend and they don’t know that we have twin. Well, long story short, the twin sneak up behind them and scares them. The friend is looking between the two of us and we’re just busting out laughing while they’re stuttering to find the words to explain what’s going on.

That’s always enjoyable and after the friend calms down they find it funny too. Its kind of like a way of introducing ourselves. Yes, we plan and do a lot of things together and we agree on a lot of things too but we are different people and we both like different things. So don’t treat us like we’re the same person and then get upset if we correct you. We want you to know that we’re not the same and we never have or will be. We’re individuals and we would like to keep it that way, just like you all want to be different from each other. We do too. So treat us like we are.

As we walked into the small shop we smiled and sat down at one of the booths talking. There was this group of boys who seemed to be making fools out of themselves. We both giggled and spoke at the same time, using the same words. These were the days we were glad that we were twins. The days when it was like we knew what the other was thinking. Those were the funny, happy days that seemed to make it all worth it. That and you always had a best friend by your side, the kind of best friend that really would last forever, without a doubt.

This work was actually based almost entirely on my two friends, who are in fact twins. They often complain and go through the same problems as the twins in this story. In the end though, the two always come to the ending conclusion that they're glad to be twins because they know that they will always be there for each other till the very end.
