I find my heart’s best left on a shelf

Above my toys and behind a new self

One that won’t wear down from pain

One that smiles and dances and acts sane

So when they take me down to play

I’m a bright shining toy happy to stay

And I guess there’s more to life

Than the games we try to play

Make believe is just fine for those in strife

And it gets me through another day

I wear all kinds of pretty dresses

To disguise my fears and second guesses

And still my heart sits high above

Gathering dust while feigning smiles and love

There might be more to this game

Than dress up and dress down and play

Like a purpose without a name

And it gets me through another day

I’d hate to think there’s a chance

That if I really let myself dance

Someone would be alright with me

And like my inner worlds they would see

And love me for who I am

Not the pretend doll or what I seem

The thought of it is scary enough

That it takes away all I could say

That transformation would be so tough

But it gets me through another day
