"i took my time to tell you how i feel, just because i took so long don't mean that it isn't real."

- Blake Shelton, "Nobody But Me"

CHAPTER TWENTY

“Fallon, Mrs. Masterson called and she’d like to know if you can take Forrest home today, dear,” Georgia said Thursday afternoon.

“Georgia, I don’t know…” I said slowly. I hadn’t been to the Masterson house since prom and I was really uncomfortable going over there when River and I weren’t dating or whatever.

“She said she’d really appreciate it if you did,” Georgia explained. “She’s running a bunch of errands today and Brock’s studying with his girlfriend,” I snorted at that last statement. Yeah, I’m sure Brock and Kansas were just ‘studying.’ Georgia ignored me and continued. “And River’s doing something else, so you’re her only hope.”

I sighed. “Okay, I guess I could take him home.”

“Oh, wonderful,” Georgia said excitedly, a little too excited if you ask me, but I brushed it off. “I’ll just call her back and let her know.”

I smiled one last time at Georgia before I continued to clean up around me. As much as I tried to keep the thought away, I couldn’t help but wonder what River was doing. Georgia said he was doing something else, but I wanted to know what ‘it’ was. Or rather, ‘who.’ I sighed. I knew it was my fault that he was back to being a manwhore, but did he have to flaunt it in my face every day? Maybe I did deserve it, but still.

Once I was done cleaning up, I sat in a chair and watched the kids playing around the room. I smiled once my eyes landed on Forrest and Lena. They had declared that they were best friends since February and it was the most adorable thing I had ever heard. They were playing with the trains together and then Forrest leaned over and whispered something in Lena’s ear that made her smile and giggle. It was amazing how they had gone from disliking each other to being best friends.

I watched them laugh and shyly smile at each other for a few more minutes before Lena’s mother came and picked her up. She gave Forrest a big hug and then ran over to me a hugged me quickly. “Bye, Miss Fallon, have a good rest of the day.”

“Bye, sweetie,” I smiled. “I’ll see you next week.”

Once Lena was gone, Forrest ran up to me and said, “Miss Fallon, how come my mommy’s not here yet?”

I smiled him. “Your mommy asked me to take you home today, is that okay with you?”

Forrest nodded eagerly. “Yay!” he cheered. “I miss eating dinner with you, Miss Fallon. You’re eating dinner with us then, right?” Forrest grabbed my hand and pulled me up from the seat.

“No, not tonight, Forrest,” I shook my head and we gathered his backpack. Forrest said goodbye to Georgia and then he led me to my black Jetta.

Once we were in the car and on the way to the Masterson house, Forrest said, “Miss Fallon, how come you never come over to our house anymore?”

I looked at him in the rearview mirror before I replied. “I… I just can’t anymore, Forrest.”

“Why not?” he asked. “Don’t you love us?”

“I…” I hesitated. Did I love the Mastersons? I had gotten to know all of them in the last five months and I started to think of them as a second family. The family I never had. “Of course I love you guys,” I said. Because I really did love the Mastersons.

“You love River the most, right, Miss Fallon?” he asked innocently.

“Well… it’s a little complicated, Forrest,” I said. I knew I was avoiding his question, but I didn’t exactly know how to answer it.

“Do you not like him kissing other girls? Because I don’t like when he kisses other girls. It's yucky. I only like when he kisses you.”

I laughed a little. “Me too, buddy. Me too.”

“Why don’t you stop him then, Miss Fallon?”

“I’m not his girlfriend anymore, Forrest. River can kiss other girls if he wants to,” I tried to explain.

“Does it make you sad, Miss Fallon?”

Jeez, when did this kid get so observant? He was too damn smart for a six year old. “A little,” I said.

“I don’t like when you’re sad,” I saw Forrest cross his arms. “I wish River would just ask you to be his girlfriend again, but he says it not that easy. I told him it was though, Miss Fallon. Really, I did. All he’s gotta say is, ‘Miss Fallon, I want you to be my girlfriend again.’ Right, Miss Fallon? You’d be River’s girlfriend again, right?”

I sighed. As adorable as Forrest was, he sure was laying it on thick with the twenty questions bit. “Yeah, buddy. I’d be River’s girlfriend again,” I told him. But I seriously doubted that River would want to be my boyfriend again.

Forrest and I fell into a comfortable silence, all questions of River and me put to an end. Once we got to the Masterson house, I saw Mrs. Masterson’s Lexus parked in the driveway and an all too familiar black BMW parked next to it. I felt my throat constrict and my heart was pounding in my ears.

“Aren’t you gonna come inside, Miss Fallon?” Forrest asked before he got out of the car. “Please?”

“I don’t know…”

Forrest wasn‘t hearing it. “Mommy will be happy to see you. And River too. He misses you.”

I seriously doubted that last part, but I gave in and followed Forrest to the front door. He opened it, rushed inside and exclaimed, “Mommy! Look who’s here!” he ran into the kitchen.

“Who, sweetie?” Mrs. Masterson bent down to hug her son.

Forrest grinned up at her and pointed at me. Mrs. Masterson’s green eyes landed on me and I gave her a small wave and a small smile. “Hi, Mrs. Masterson.”

She gave me a bright smile. “Hello, Fallon. We’ve missed you around here,” she stood up and then got a thoughtful look on her face. “Fallon, before you leave do you think you could go upstairs and get Tyson and Nate for me? They’re in River’s room,” she said. “I’d do it myself, but I’m just so busy making dinner. Could you be a dear and do that?”

I silently groaned. I really didn’t want to go to River’s room. Hell, I didn’t even want to be in the house. But Mrs. Masterson asked so nicely. “Um, I guess so. But then I really have to go,” I said. Yes, it was a lie, but I didn't know how to say no to her politely.

“Okay, dear,” she smiled at me and then down at Forrest. “I’m sure I’ll see you soon.”

“Uh, yeah, sure,” I waved goodbye and left the room, missing the winks that Mrs. Masterson and Forrest exchanged.

As I walked up the stairs to River’s room, my heart rate definitely increased. I was so nervous at the moment and I didn’t know why. It wasn’t like I was going to talk to River, I was getting Tyson and Nate for Mrs. Masterson. Once I reached River’s room, I heard him laugh at something one of the boys said. God, I missed hearing him laugh. I took a deep breath and knocked on the door.

“Yeah?” River called. “Come in!”

I hesitated for a second before I grabbed the door handle. “Get it together, Fallon,” I reprimanded myself. “You’re just doing Mrs. M a favor,” I reminded myself. I opened the door slowly and walked inside.

River was sitting on the couch with the boys, playing a game on the Xbox as always. He had been smiling, but once his deep blue eyes landed on me, his smile faded. Tyson and Nate had these unreadable expressions on their faces and kept looking back and forth at each other and then to River and me.

“What are you doing here?” River asked, blue eyes hard.

Even though I wanted to haul ass out of the house, I stood my ground. River had never seen me back down before and I wasn’t about to give him that satisfaction now. “Mrs. Masterson wanted me to tell Tyson and Nate that she needs them.”

“What does she need with them?” he asked.

“We’ll go see what your mom needs, Riv,” Tyson got up.

Nate nodded his head. “Yeah, we’ll be back. You two just… I don’t know… talk or fuck or something.”

“Sorry to rain on your parade, Nathaniel, but I’m leaving too,” I turned around to leave with them, but Nate gently pushed me back.

“It’s time, Fallon,” Nate smirked.

“Time for wh--” Nate cut off anything I was about to say by pulling the door shut in my face. That’s when it hit me. They set me up! They knew I couldn’t say no to taking Forrest home. And Forrest! He was in on it too! Well, fuck that. I wasn’t about to stay here. I turned the doorknob, but it was locked. Fuck.

River just stared at Fallon’s back, his heart pounding. She hadn’t been in his room in a long time, and as much as he liked having her there, he wanted her to leave. “What are you still doing here?”

“I’m trying to leave, but your door’s locked,” she snapped. “Do you think I want to stay here?”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” River stood up and walked over to the door. He gently, but forcefully, moved Fallon out of his way. He didn’t want to be in such close proximity to her. He shook the handle a couple of times, but no dice. “What the hell did you do?” he looked at her.

Fallon glared at him. “I didn’t do anything,” she spat.

River pounded on the door a few times and he heard voices and a few muffled laughs on the other side of the door. “Ty! Nate!” he yelled. “Open the door, damnit!”

“Sorry, Riv,” Tyson said from the other side. “But your mom told us to lock you guys in there until you work out your shit.”

“You dumbass, you can just unlock the door from in here,” Fallon said.

“Shut up,” River narrowed his eyes at her. River unlocked the door, the handle moved, but the door wouldn’t open. “What the fuck?” River looked at his door for a second. He didn’t know why he didn’t notice it before, but there was a new lock on his door. One that required a key.

“Oh, by the way,” Nate said. “Your mom installed that while we were at school today. The only way either of you is getting out is if we let you out.”

“This isn’t fucking funny,” River was starting to get irritated. Even more so since Fallon Kennedy was still in the room. “I don’t want her in my room.”

Fallon scoffed. “You think I want to be in here? I have better things to do than talk to you.”

“You think you’re the only one?” River said. “I have plans tonight.”

“Fucking another whore I’m assuming?”

“Fucking a whore is no different than fucking you,” River shot back. Fallon’s eyes were narrowed, but River swore he saw hurt flash in them. He immediately regretted saying it. Fallon wasn’t a whore, but he wanted his words to hurt her as much as her words hurt him. He didn’t care that she had tried talking to him in the last week. River didn’t want to hear anything she had to say.

“You’re such an asshole, River,” she crossed her arms over her chest.

“Don’t act like you’re any different from me, Fallon,” River rolled his eyes. “We both know you’re a bitch.”

Fallon muttered something under her breath and looked at the floor. His ears caught the word ‘love’ but that was it.

“What did you say?” River asked.

“Why do you care?” Fallon said. “It’s not like it’s going to matter to you anyway. You don’t want to hear anything I have to say, remember?”

“You’re right,” River agreed. “You’re probably just mocking me again anyway.”

“You caught me,” she said dryly. “God, River. Why can’t you and I ever have a civil conversation anymore?”

“You’re really asking why?” River asked incredulously. “If I recall, you’re the one who shot me down,” the memory of prom made River’s heart ache. “I fucking tell you I’m I love with you and you just stomp all over me,” River narrowed his eyes at her. “You expect me to be civil after you do that? Fuck that, Fallon.”

“Well, excuse me for freaking out!” she threw her hands in the air. “I wasn’t even expecting you to say it, okay?”

“That still doesn’t make up for how you reacted,” River sighed. “You told me I meant nothing to you after all the times you said you cared about me. What the fuck, Fallon? Were you just telling me that to manipulate me? To make me think you were feeling something for me too? Because congratulations! It worked.”

“Good! I’m glad it worked,” she said scathingly. “Do you think I wanted to hurt you, River?”

“If you didn’t, you sure as hell fooled me,” he scoffed. “And now if I want to go out and fuck a new girl every day or every week, I will. I’m not going to apologize for how I try to get over you.”

“River, you’re not the only one who’s hurting!” her voice broke slightly, but it was still strong. “You don’t even know how miserable I’ve been, so don’t act like you’re the only one trying to repair a broken heart.”

River crossed his arms. “You don’t have a heart to repair, Fallon,” he said. “Because if you had one, you wouldn’t have crushed mine so severely.”

“Jesus, you sound like a fucking girl.”

“Excuse me for explaining how I’m feeling,” he said sardonically. “For the second fucking time,” he added as an after thought. “You want to tell me it doesn’t matter to you some more?”

“For your information, it does matter to me.”

“Could’ve fooled me.”

“God, you’re infuriating.”

“Trust me, the feeling’s mutual.”

Fallon started to say something else, but River couldn’t concentrate on it. It had been so long since he last touched her and he just had to get turned on by arguing with her. Fucking a. He was trying to hold back, but the urge to kiss her was starting to get too overpowering. She was still in her uniform and all River wanted to do at the moment was rip it off of her. But he fought the feeling.

“… I can’t believe I even fell in love with someone like you!” she narrowed her ocean eyes at him.

“Well, I can’t believe I fell in love with someone like you!” he shot back. “My life would be so much easier if I could love someone who’s not going to bitch at me every second of every fucking day!”

“You’re and idiot, you know that?”

“Trust me, I know. I’m still in love with you,” he admitted. “Can’t get any dumber than that.”

Before River could stop himself, he cupped Fallon’s face in his hands and brought their lips together. She tasted like watermelon, most likely from her chapstick, and River wanted to taste more of her. It had been so long since he last kissed her, he almost forgot how good it felt to have her body against his.

As River’s lips worked against hers, he pressed her up against the door and Fallon’s hands tangled in his hair, holding him to her. River’s tongue pushed demandingly into her mouth, his hands running up and down her sides. River wanted, no needed, to be closer to her, so his hands gripped the back of her thighs and lifted her up, her legs wrapping around his waist.

River had her pressed against the door, his fingers working to unbutton the white collared shirt. Fallon’s own hands were playing the hem of River’s t-shirt, trailing underneath to feel the muscles of his back. Once the last button was undone, it was quickly discarded along with River’s own shirt.

He stopped kissing her to catch his breath, her blue eyes looking into his. River saw lust and there was also a hint of something else, but he couldn’t make out what it was. Her lips were swollen, her hair a mess, but fuck. She was still beautiful.

“Fal--”

“Shut up,” she said, breathing ragged.

River took her advice and pressed his mouth to hers once more. The friction in his jeans was getting difficult to handle and he needed to feel her skin on his soon. River shifted his hips slightly and Fallon moaned into his mouth. She must have been thinking the same thing because the next thing River knew, the rest of their clothes landed various places on the floor.

He couldn’t wait much longer after that, so he lifted her up and settled her on his hips, finally connecting their bodies. River didn’t make any movements, but he lowered his head to the nape of her neck, lightly kissing and sucking the sensitive spot while a hand cupped her breast. Fallon moaned quietly and rolled her hips against his, silently telling him to get a move on.

River started moving at a slow and rhythmic pace when something hit him. What did she say before they got started? That she…

“Fal?” he managed to get out.

“Yeah, baby?” her breath was in his ear. It was ragged and husky and River picked up the pace a little before he asked his question.

“What was it that you…” Fallon had relaxed her body by then and started to match his pace, her hips meeting his. She let out another moan and River felt her arch her back off of the door. He was getting lost in the moment and his question was momentarily forgotten.

He placed light kisses on her neck for a few seconds before he increased his speed, pushing faster and farther until Fallon finally cried out. As she rode out the waves of pleasure, River lifted his head and kept the fast pace before his own release came. He let out a groan, bending his head to the crook of her neck once more. They were both sweaty, tired, and out of breath. River had to place a hand on the door to support himself and Fallon up.

Fallon’s hand lightly started scratching the back of his head and once River knew his breathing was normal, he lifted his head to look her in the eyes. She smiled sleepily at him and then softly brought her lips to his forehead.

“What did you say earlier?” he asked.

She raised an eyebrow. “You’re an idiot?” she supplied with a tired laugh.

He shook his head. “No, before that.”

“I’m in love with you?”

“That was it,” he pressed his lips to hers. “Say it again,” he whispered.

“I’m in love with you,” she repeated, resting her forehead on his and closing her eyes.

That was all he needed.

Once River and I got our clothes back on, I combed my fingers through my tangled dark brown hair and took a seat next to him on the couch. We didn’t say anything at first, but he smiled at me and my heart did a back flip.

“So…” he said.

“So…” I nodded, looking around the room.

“You’re not fucking with my head again, are you?” he blurted. “Because we just had some awesome make-up sex and I’m hoping to do it again.”

I laughed a little at his honesty. “No, I’m not messing with your head again,” I told him. “I’m sorry I lied to you,” I sighed. “I should have told you the truth at prom, but I was scared. And when you said it first, I just panicked.”

“I can’t believe you lied to me,” he said. “How do I know you’re not lying to me now?” he leaned back an eyed me suspiciously.

“Seriously?” I asked incredulously. “You just said we had some ‘awesome make-up sex’ and now you’re questioning whether I’m telling the truth or not?”

“Can you blame me for being skeptical?” he asked. “How do I know you won’t lie to me again?”

“You don’t,” I said. “How do I know you’ll never cheat on me?” I countered.

“You don’t.”

“Exactly. River, if you and I are going to make this work,” I motioned between the two of us, “then we’re just going to have to trust each other. Does that sound fair?”

“Yeah,” he nodded. River was quiet for a few sconds and then he grabbed my hand and spoke up again. “Fallon, I want you to be my girlfriend again.”

“Okay,” I agreed with a smile and leaned over to kiss him softly.

“Damn,” he said against my lips. “Forrest was right. That was easy.”

I laughed. “He sure is the smartest out of all you Masterson boys.”

“Hey,” River scoffed. “That’s not--”

River was cut off by someone pounding on the door. “Okay, we left you both up here for an hour and a half,” Nate called through the door.

“Yeah, did you fuck and make up already?” Garrett’s voice followed. “I just got here and I’m fucking hungry!”

“Garrett, there’s a little one in the hallway,” Perry reprimanded him. “Hello, darling! I expect a full and detailed report later!” he called.

“We’re opening the door now!” Tyson said. “I hope you’re both fully clothed because Forrest is telling me to hurry up.”

Once the lock clicked, Forrest Masterson ran into the room. It’s a good thing I didn’t look too disheveled because he didn’t need to know what his brother and I had been doing. “Miss Fallon, Miss Fallon, are you River’s girlfriend again?”

I nodded. “Yep.”

“Was it easy, River?” his blue eyes looked over to his brother.

“Yeah, little man, just like you said.”

“I told you so,” Forrest said smugly. “And did you kiss?”

I nodded again. “Yeah, buddy.”

“Great! Now you get to have dinner with us and sit next to me like always,” he grinned.

“Hey!” River ruffled his brother’s hair. “You know, little man, you keep trying to take my girl from me.”

Forrest shrugged and raced out of the room. “I’ll save your seat, Miss Fallon!”

The other boys, River, and I laughed and we made our way downstairs, where I probably would end up sitting next to Forrest.

“Your brother’s such a smooth talker,” I grinned.

“Yeah, he’s definitely going break a few hearts,” River sighed. “After all, he is a Masterson.”

“He may be a Masterson, but I have a feeling he’s going to break the mold and not grow up to be such a slut like his older brothers,” I said as we reached the kitchen.

“Is that so?” River raised an eyebrow. “You wanna bet?”

I looked over at Forrest who was grinning wildly at me. I smirked and looked back at River. “You’re on.”

FIN.

A/N: Aw, I can't believe it's over. I don't know if their make-up was 'steamy' enough, but it suited me just fine. I'll have to work on the smut bit for future stories, I guess. I hope you guys liked it. Got a little preview for Forrest's story in there too. :]

Thank you so much to those of you who have reviewed, alerted, and favorited this story! You have no idea how much all your support means to me. Chapter 1 of Logan's story, "Boys Like You," has been posted. Check it out if you're interested in reading the Masterson series. I love all you guys!
