She fidgeted on her bed nervously, the girl silently pleading with the fuming brunette who was standing next to her window. “Min, why are you being so difficult?” she asked her, absentmindedly twirling a strand of dark red hair around her finger as she struggled to look her in the eyes.

“I’m being difficult?! How the hell am I being difficult when you failed to follow through on your promise and lied to me for an entire month?!”

“I was going to tell her, Min!”

“When were you going to tell her, Cam? After we got married and had kids?!”

“Well…”

“Cam!”

“All right, all right. I’ll tell her tonight. I just need to think of the right way to tell her.”

“There really isn’t a right way.”

“I know. No matter how I tell her she’s still going to shit a brick,” Cam muttered, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as she stared at Min who still looked furious with her. She didn’t blame her. The eighteen year olds had made a pact to tell their parents about their relationship and basically come out of the closet a few weeks ago. Min went through with this while Cam chickened out in the end. She had attempted to lie to Min and make her believe she had come out to her mom but when Min went to kiss her in front of her mom a few days ago Cam suddenly shouted and diverted her mother’s attention else. This made Min realize the truth and it had been hard to get Min to agree to talk to her.

“You know Cam you don’t want to tell her. I know it seems like I’m mad about that but I’m not. I’m more angry over the fact that you lied to me.”

“No, I do want to tell her. I’m just afraid she’ll try to send me to a convent or something.”

“Whatever happens, happens and worrying yourself sick isn’t going to help anything,” Min told her before she kissed her goodbye and told her good luck.

It had been hard to think of a way to come out to her mom. She knew she could blurt out that she was gay but Cam feared that when she went to open her mouth nothing would come out and this did have some truth to it. The eighteen year old had attempted to tell her several times in the past month and every time she tried her mouth went dry so that wasn’t an option. Writing her a note could work but she really wasn’t sure if she wanted to do that.

“Maybe I should wait until Min and I are married,” Cam muttered under her breath as she plopped down on the couch, blinking as she glanced over at the table. On the table was a scrabble board. It was out because it was a Friday and every Friday night was their game night. This time they were playing Scrabble. It had been her mother’s idea and she had reluctantly gone along with it but as she stared at the scrabble board she realized it could work in her favor.

Getting up off the couch, she shuffled over towards the table and took the scrabble board out of the box, placing on it the said table as she searched for the right letters. After a few moments she finally found all the letters she was looking for and slowly spelled out ‘Mom, I’m gay’ on the scrabble board. It wasn’t exactly the most conventional way to come out to someone. Cam was aware of this but it had been the spur of a moment decision. Starting to get second thoughts, she had just reached for the scrabble board when she heard the door start to open and she instantly knew it was her mom.

“Hey mom,” she called out, glancing at the scrabble board and knowing that it was to late for her to change her mind but maybe her mother wouldn‘t react that badly.

It was what she hoped would happen at least.
