Prologue (rip my throat out)

Laying here with Jace’s body melded to mine, his dark brown waves tickling my nose, my lips, my cheeks, I’ve just about forgotten. He has to bring it up though. It’s all in the job description, he might joke, but keeping his people—my people now—safe means more to him than I do.

That part hurts, but life’s not all roses and daisies. And I’m especially good at dealing with hurt.

“They’re coming for us as we speak,” his grip tightens on my hips, “I hate this.”

His fingers slide lower, down my bare thighs, tracing patterns the whole way. I don’t say anything and relax into him as his warm hands continue to navigate my body.

“Your skin’s so cold,” Jace murmurs, lips to my shoulder, “so icy.”

Before I can even shiver the question bubbles to my lips; it’s not fair to ask, but I’ve got to know. “You know how I’m the only one who’s ever been both—how I’m so unique?

He’s not paying too much attention while dragging his mouth across my collarbone. I can tell, even when he shakes his head, he’s not listening. So it'll be a real shock when he hears what I have to say next. “If I ended up being more like my mother, would you still feel the same way about me? Could you love a vampire?”

All it takes is a moment’s hesitation and I’m up out of the bed and pulling on my jeans quicker than I would have thought possible before—before I knew what I was.

He had time, too. Time to pull me back and convince me otherwise. I guess he thought I’d come back, that I’d want to stay safe with him. But the truth was, once I stepped outside, into the darkness, I felt so much more alive than before. Like no one could touch me, like I was meant for the night.

And even better than that, once the big-bad-vampires did come and get me, Jace wouldn’t be stuck choosing who to protect. His brothers or the girl he sort of suspected to rip his throat out anytime now?

A/N: Ooops, I forgot the prologue! my b.
