Do What Makes You Happy

At the lunch table you sit there, earphones in your ears, music blasting. Emotions overpowering everything; is it sadness or anger radiating from your eyes? Those cerulean eyes that have seen too much, know too much, and will see only so much more.

I watch you from a short distance, taking note on the atmosphere around you. The indefiniteness keeps me from speaking, mad or sad I couldn’t tell, yet I would never ask. You stood up and sat beside me, holding out an earphone. Taking it I immediately recognized the song as “Until the Day I Die” by Story of the Year.

Your head bowed and I understood the meaning of it. Reaching over I clasped your hand in mine. You knew I got the meaning and spoke quietly, “I don’t know if I should or not…”

Running my fingers over your scarred knuckles I replied, “Do what makes you happy.”

I received a short laugh and a strangled reply. “Happy?”

I pulled you up from our table and we skipped school that day. I took you around the city, showing you ‘happy.’ As it got late into the night we returned to my house. You have me a quick hug and said in that deliciously soft voice of yours, “Thanks.”

“No problem.” I returned the hug and went into my house, falling into a deep sleep on the couch not knowing what tomorrow may hold.

The next day I sat through three classes wondering if I would see you or not. Walking into lunch I grinned. There you sat at my table, earphones in your ears, and music blasting. I sat down beside you and took an earphone to put in my ear. The song “You’re the One” by A Thorn for Every Heart greeted them. I looked up at you, eyebrow raised.

You linked our hands and said, “So…you accept?”

Nodding I said, “Yes, yes I do because: you’re my something, you are my everything, you’re the one that makes me feel alive!

A grin arose on your face and you looked…happy. Joining in you sang, “You end my suffering, you end my misery,” and then adding in your own lyric you said, “and you make me happy.”
