This Is a one shot I came up with at my cousins wedding. Give it a chance and tell me what you think

"It's time", our dad said poking his head into the room that we - my older brother, my fraternal twin and I- had occupied.

I took one last look at the bow tie, adjusted the tux jacket and filed out of the room along with my brothers. We walked down the corridor towards the door leading into the main church. We walked in and stood in front of the large group of people, family and friends, as they chattered away. Some fanned themselves to battle the heat. Some one laughed in the front row and elsewhere a baby cooed.

It was an elaborately planned wedding. A testament to the fact that our families were loaded. But the extravagance wasn't a show of power or wealth. It was to celebrate.

Today was the day that Allyson Pierce, was finally going to be a part of the Trent family.

Fun, Feisty Glorious, Ally.

Ally who grew up on the ranch next door.

Ally, who always insisted on being considered as one of us guys(her two brothers included), well, that changed, when she crossed over to the dark side at the tender age of 9, and decided she want to be girl.

Ally, with the heart stopping, dimpled smile.

Ally, with the brown doe eyes. She never did realize she could get anyone to do what she wanted, once they got lost in their rich, honey colored depths.

Ally, my little sisters best friend.

Ally, the love of my life.

A sudden hush fell over the church. My little niece, walked down the aisle, taking her duties as flower girl very seriously. The brides maids followed. The pianist began to play and Ally finally appeared, holding onto her brother Jake's arm.

As she began walking down the aisle, she smiled. I remembered the gap toothed one she had at 6.

The white dress she wore, seemed to have been tailored just for her. Her shoulders were bare. The fabric swayed, along with her elegant strides. I remembered the overalls she used to insist on wearing, till she ripped them in a fist fight. Man, could she hit when pissed. She was only 7 then.

The sunlight trickled through the windows. Her dark hair gleamed. It was pined up in a sophisticated knot, a few tendrils escaped to frame her face. I remembered the little braids she wore and the number of times I tied them to the dining room chair, so she wouldn't get in our way.

As she drew closer, I noticed her clutching something and grinned when I realized what it was. A black magnetic stone. A guilty 9 year old boys gift to a 7 year old girl. The other half of which I had absently reached for in my pocket.

Jake, my twin Alex and I were playing around trying our damnedest to ignore her & Tallie, my little sister.

" Why won't you let us play!" She screamed in frustration.

" Because you're a girl. You can't climb trees." I yelled back.

" Can to."

" Cannot"

" Watch me!!"

She started climbing the tree we were sitting under. Jake tried to talk her out of it, but she wouldn't listen. She got midway and caught her foot. Before we knew it she was crashing to the ground.

" ALLY!!" Jake screamed. He stood rooted to the spot, horror struck, Alex was no better.

" Ally? Al?" I whispered. She didn't move. I couldn't remember any other time I was so terrified.

She finally whimpered and tried to sit up. Bruises and cuts covered her arms.I sucked in a breath of relief.

" You IDIOT!! Why did you do it?!" I screamed, not noticing the tears welling up in her eyes. She looked up defiantly.

" You said I couldn't"

She tried to stand and almost toppled over.

" What's wrong Al?" Alex asked as she went pale and held Jakes arm.

" I.. ca-can't wa-walk." She hiccuped

I walked toward her and turned around. " C'mon." She didn't move.

" Ally." I said more gently.

She finally wrapped her arms around my neck and I gave her a piggy back ride to our house. Jake and Alex had already run ahead with Tallie to tell our mom. On the quiet walk home I felt her tears on my neck. Ally was crying. Ally never cried, she always fought back.

Once mom finished tending to Ally's swollen ankle and patching up her cuts , she went to call Mrs Peirce over.I sat there feeling guilty as hell, looking at her tear stained face. Finally I pulled out the two black stones in my pocket. They were magnetic, stuck to each other. My "Pirates booty". Something, Alex and I had dug up in the back yard. The day before I wouldn't even let her touch them.

" Here." I held one of them in my palm. She looked up surprised, but didn't take it.

" I'm sorry." I whispered. She took it and smiled, kissed me on the cheek and rubbed her mouth quickly. I blushed for the first time and thanked god none of brothers were there to witness it.

I remember telling Alex that I lost the stones somewhere, when he asked me later.

Ally was still half way down the isle and it seemed like for ever. She looked up and our gazes held. Not for the first time, my breath caught and my heart beat out of rhythm.

I should've know, should've been smart enough to realize that once a woman had that kind of power over a man, he was a goner. No matter how hard he'd try to shut her out, she'd always creep back into his heart. No matter what kind defenses he'd build she'd burrow right under them.

It wasn't until I moved out to go to Harvard law school that I realized how I had progressively started missing her more and more. Missing the quirky arguments, her fire cracker personality, talking about nothing and everything. And dare I say flirting?

Ally went to medical school when I was away. Now she has a practice in town, she'd taken it over from old Dr Peterson. She's the best loved vet in town.

I used to come home for summers but never got to see her until I finally graduated law school at 24.

It was summer 5 years ago, and our families threw a joint party on the success of TP ( Trent and Peirce) ranches, extensively spread cross Texas and now handled by Jake and my brothers.

She was standing alone in the cool breeze, leaning against the balcony railing. A fitted, dark blue dress, finally gave me a glimpse of grown up Ally.

We argued like old times. She didn't miss a chance to deflate my "continent sized" ego as she put it. We just talked and didn't realize the time.

"... you think every one loves you, don't you?"

" Aw, C'mon Al, you know you do." I was smirking at her. She didn't retort. Her brown eyes were gazing right into mine, and my heart skipped a beat for the first time. What I did next seemed to be logical. *Insert snort *. I was an idiot not to have realized it had nothing to do with logic.

I kissed her.

We jumped apart when we thought we heard someone. She hurried back inside and never looked back. For the next few weeks all I could think of was her. Any smart man would have realized at least then, that he'd been steadily falling in love.

Having graduated at the top of my class, my analytical skills should have been working over time, trying to figure out what was happening to me. But you see, logic doesn't work on a man neck deep in denial, nor did i realize that any idiot would have chucked logic right out the window and listened to his heart.

Ally finally reached the end of the isle. She kissed Jake on the cheek. Drawing away from him, she clasped the outstretched hand.

" You take care of her now." my best friend said.

" I will." Alex grinned at Jake.

Ally and Alex turned towards the priest. I shifted from one foot to the other. I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding.

Ally was finally going to be part of our family. Fun, Feisty, Glorious Ally, was marrying my brother Alex.

Now you ask me, when was it that I finally realized I was in love with her. My answer would be, too damned late.

I didn't even know that Ally and Alex were dating till a month later.I was just coming to grips with the intense jealousy, when, 2 more months later Alex decided to marry her.

" Isn't this going really fast?" I asked him.

" I'm in love with her and she loves me." He grinned at me. I buried my face in my hands and groaned. I let out a bitter laugh, which thankfully he didn't notice.

I was an idiot. A fool of the highest degree. My brother obviously had the good sense i lacked, to see what I'd blatantly refused to even acknowledge. It took my own brother falling in love with Ally to make me realize, I'd been in love with her for god knows how long. While I took my time to realize that, Ally didn't wait. There was no reason why she would have.

" You Ok Bro?"

" I'm fine." Atleast as fine as a guy could be in my situation. He asked me to be his best man.

So here I am, Bradley James Trent, 29, Best Man at my brothers wedding, Trying my damnedest to smile like everyone else, but most of my attention is focused on keeping the pieces of my shattered heart together, hoping it would hold, at least for the next 15 minutes.
