Epilogue
He spun her artfully, his shined shoes expertly gripping the freshly waxed dance floor. The skirt of her dress flared out as she twirled, her smile growing larger and larger as she circled around him. The beat slowed and he pulled her into his arms, pressing her against his chest. Her head tilted upwards and she gazed up at him, smiling wondrously as she thought on the day they had just had. They had crossed so many bridges to get here, so many obstacles.
He lowered towards her and brushed his lips against hers, inhaling her sweet scent as he straightened. The crowd around them clapped, bringing a warm blush to Angelina’s cheeks. She tucked her head into Matt’s chest and continued to let him lead her.
“May I cut in?” a deep voice asked politely from beside them.
Angelina turned and found Matt’s father staring lovingly down at her. Matt nodded and handed her off gracefully, turning towards his own mother and sweeping her into his arms.
“Have I told you how beautiful you look?” his father whispered down to her after spinning her in a tight circle.
Angelina ducked her head and smiled.
He eyed his gorgeous daughter-in-law in all her glory on this special day. The stylist had pulled her light hair into tight curls, then pinned half behind her head. They had let her bangs down to add a slight coyness to her look. They had accentuated her eyes, just gushing over how they would pop in the photos. All in all, she looked like an angel sent from heaven. And he felt that Matt was one of the luckiest men in the world. He had seen plenty of times how stories like theirs had ended. And most of the time, someone died. They were simply lucky it had been Clayton.
He spun her across the floor once more, the designs on her white dress catching in the light. Flashes went off all around her as people tried to capture this moment in her life.
Taking her into his arms once more, he smiled deeply, very proud to have her as his new daughter-in-law.
The song finished quickly and before he could even thank her for the dance, Matt came sliding up behind her and pulled her back into his arms, where she belonged. Her laugh was like music to his ears.
“Hello my wife,” he whispered in her ear, his thoughts flicking excitedly to the night he had planned.
She snuggled into him with a content sigh as they continued to dance. A year and a half had passed since the night in the abandoned shack with Clayton and she loved that it rarely affected her life anymore. Occasionally she would wake with nightmares, but in the security of Matt’s arms, the fear drifted into the shadows quickly.
His mother came running up to the couple, visibly excited. She had been raving for a year to anyone who would listen the strength and beauty of her soon to be daughter in law. Today was just about the most exciting day in her life.
She pulled Angelina’s face towards her, planting a sloppy kiss on her cheek, gushing over how beautiful they looked together, how perfect they were. Like a match made in heaven!
Matt smiled down at his new wife, feeling utterly blissful. He leaned down and whispered into her ear, “That’s because you’re my Angel.”
