CHAPTER FIVE
I’m insane, I don’t have visions, it’s my imagination. Right? Please be my imagination.
Jamie attempted to go to bed early that night. But the image of her roommate—and really good friend—with black eyes was something not easily forgotten.
Without even realizing it she’d finally fallen asleep around 2 am. Waking up to her alarm clock she didn’t feel well. She hit the off button and looked at Karyn whom was already getting ready.
She looked at Jamie and raised an eyebrow. “Jamie, you don’t look so good.”
“I don’t feel so great either. Can you please tell the teachers that?”
She nodded understanding. Normally Jamie would go to class besides the fact that she didn’t feel well. She’d sit it out like the tough girl she was. If she didn’t want to go to classes it meant that she really wasn’t feeling well. Which was only half true. Physically she was only felling half way, emotionally, she was completely wiped out.
“Yeah, sure, hope you feel better later.”
“I’ll try,” she sighed as Karyn left to go to class.
The door closed. Jamie had nothing but time to think. Why did she have the visions? They didn’t seem to happen at set times. She’d gone a week without them, and then they began again. Maybe there was something wrong with her brain. She could have a psychotic disorder. But then wouldn’t that have been present since birth. Something could have trigger it, right?
No, then she wouldn’t be using logic, or science to try to explain it. She’d probably just accept it without any questioning at all. She could go to a neurologist. If she wanted them to think she was crazy. Yeah, okay, no.
She knew something wasn’t right. Contemplating the situation wouldn’t help either. It’d just make her headache worse. Picking up the room phone she called the nurse. With a promise that she’d be there as soon as she could she hung up and went back to whomever she was with then.
It being just after winter vacation Jamie knew for a fact that Nurse Gail had quite a bit of work. After vacation was when most students decided to get sick. In tenth grade she’d had to work for Nurse Gail as an assistant. The volunteer work not only got her an A, it was also a great learning experience.
Twenty minutes after calling there was a soft knock at the door. Her head pounded as she stood up and walked towards the door. Opening it she smiled, moving to the side so that Nurse Gail could walk in.
“Hello Jamie, imagine my surprise when you called. The girl who never gets sick.”
“I don’t have to.”
“So, what’s wrong?”
“I don’t know really. Right now I just have a headache.”
“That’s nothing to miss class over, now is it?”
“No, it’s…” she trailed off. Standing in a hospital room. Her body lied on the bed, and she watched as she opened her eyes. Brendan stood over her, his face grim, his eyes serious.
“Jamie?” he asked.
She groaned, sitting up. “Yeah?”
“Are you okay?”
“Sort of, you?”
“Fine thanks to you.”
Raising an eyebrow she gave him a questioning look. “You’re…welcome?”
“That’s not good Jamie.”
“Huh?”
As if being pushed she suddenly moved from her spot and back into reality.
“Sweetie, I suggest you sit down, please.”
“Oh, what? Sorry!” She quickly walked and sat down on the couch.
The nurse gave her this strange look. “I think you need some rest.”
“Um…yeah, good idea.”
****
She sat on the couch still dressed in her white tank-top and red girl boxers. She had her laptop on and was doing whatever she could to distract her mind from the fact that Karyn hadn’t come back to the room yet. It was already after curfew, and as far as Jamie knew, her friend didn’t have any plans for the afternoon.
There was a knock at the door. Jamie sighed, and put the laptop to the side. Expecting it to be Karyn she said, “Where the heck have you—” When she saw who was on the other side she sighed.
A smirk played Brendan’s lips as he looked her up and down. “What do you want?”
“Just here to make sure you’re okay.”
“I’m fine it was nothing, really.” Almost instantly she realized her mistake. He knew her too well to believe her sad excuse.
“Yeah? Well last time I checked you didn’t miss school unless you were dying.”
“I wasn’t feeling well this morning, so I called the nurse and she told me to stay in bed for a few days.” That part was thanks to her visions, but she wasn’t about to tell him that.
“Alight, um…I think we need to talk.”
“Uh huh…” she moved to the side to let him into the room. Fine thanks to you, he’d said with the same serious look on his face.
She was breaking a major rule, allowing him to be in her room. Closing the door behind him she crossed her arms under her chest and nodded. “What do you wanna talk about?”
“Um, well, I hear you have a date with my roommate tomorrow.”
“Aw man, I forgot! I’m totally going to have to cancel.”
“Why?”
“I’m supposed to stay in for a few days.”
“Okay, any way, um. Do you remember what I said the other day?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Will you consider it? Please.”
He looked sincere, like he really wanted to be back together. But the emotion failed to reach his eyes. “Alright, with one condition. Why?”
“Why what?”
“You’re the one who broke up with me. Why would you even consider getting back together?”
His face was unreadable, as if he didn’t have an explanation. He shrugged. “Once you were gone I realized that I needed you more than I thought.”
She didn’t believe him. And she had the right to. She knew him well enough to know how he acted in certain situations. “Okay, I’ll consider it.”
There was an awkward silence. “You know, you look fine to me.”
“Well, I’m really not,” she said not addressing what he meant.
“Yeah, you are, trust me you're fine.”
Instantly she knew that they were talking about the same thing. Pointing out his mistake she said, “How do you know?”
“From the way you look. You’re fine.”
“For now,” she mumbled.
“Yeah,” he replied.
She gave him a strange look and watched his face twist into a look of regret. Deciding she smiled.
“Prove yourself.” He looked at her confused. “You can take me on a date. After that I’ll decide,” she said. It was lie; she already had.
“Alright. When?”
“Friday. You decide the rest.”
****
At midnight Jamie was woken up by the door to the dorm opening. She heard Karyn sigh but didn’t dare move a muscle. The door closed and she heard a thump as Karyn dropped her stuff on the floor. There was another sound, metal being dropped on wood.
She listened to Karyn’s footsteps as she went into the bathroom. As soon as the door closed Jamie climbed out of bed and went to Karyn’s dresser.
She picked up the chain to the necklace and studied the pendant. A back sun. She touched the pendant with curiosity. Instantly she dropped it. She felt drained, her hand stung from the touch. Looking at the pendant again it was no longer black. Now it was orange.
She yawned and picked it up by the chain. She put it back onto the dresser before heading to her bed and instantly falling asleep.
I love what happens in the story after this. Trust me the begining is coming to an end. IDK why i posted this chapter. I guess i just felt like it. I loved writing this. I hope i don't disappoint.
BTW, before i continue writing any further i was told that Brendan and Jamie should "get together". (aka have sex). I've considered it but dont think it would be a good idea. tell me what you think please. Thank you. REVIEW!
