Call Me

It was a normal late, Friday afternoon as I was walking home from my job at the local bookstore. Same people walking up and down the streets of this small, boring town. Same business owners attempting, and failing to bring in new customers to their small businesses.

I walked past the stop sign not even really checking if cars were coming by, no cars were ever going to come by. Every day, day in and day out it would be the same. That’s what made my plan so easy to accomplish.

Walking up to an old Victorian house I rapped on the door three times. This was the new guy’s house that had just moved here from Ohio, his name was Derrick. Now, Derrick seemed to be your normal, run of the mill guy from a small town. He didn’t have me fooled though; I knew what he really was.

Derrick was very obviously a vampire. I’m not crazy, I swear. Last night as I was walking home I heard vicious snarls from an alley way by my work; when I glanced in there I saw Derrick biting into a girl’s neck then carelessly throwing her aside. The last thing I heard him say to the now dead girl was, “Call me.”

Being the morbid girl I was I had already had a fair amount of information about vampires. The one true way to kill a vampire was to stake them in the heart. Luckily, I happened to have one of those stashed in my house; it was a prank gift from a friend one year who thought it would be hilarious to get me one, along with ‘holy water,’ and a cross necklace. Now these items were all concealed in the pockets of my long, black trench coat.

After I had knocked on the door, Derrick answered the door, gaze apprehensive. I don’t think he was expecting a visitor. “Hello?” he asked, as a question because we had never met before.

“Hi! I’m Selene, I live down the street from here and I heard you were new so I thought I would introduce myself.” I grinned, not for once letting my cover down.

Derrick held out his hand and I shook it. “Nice to meet you Selene, I’m Derrick. How about you come in, sit, and we’ll have a drink?”

Smiling warmly, I said, “That would be wonderful.”

Derrick led me in and we sat in his living room, talking, having a merry time. It really was a pity I was going to kill him. When he left saying he had to take a bathroom break I brought out my stake; I would strike when he came back. As I moved toward the door I heard a hiss behind me and Derrick’s voice. “So you really thought you could kill me Selene?”

I felt where Derrick was standing behind me; I had to get this right the first time or all was lost, including my life. “I didn’t think I could kill you Derrick, I know I can.”

He laughed and put his hand on my shoulder, leaning in and pressing a disgustingly chaste kiss on my neck. “You know, you would’ve made a wonderful vampire…”

I quickly turned around and slammed the stake down into Derrick’s chest, catching him off guard. “You know…you would’ve made a wonderful human.” I smirked and whipped open his curtains letting what was left of the sunlight pour in and hit him directly. He flailed about on the floor, screaming profanities while I stood there watching. Finally when his body went still I pulled out my stake and walked out his front door smiling. Before closing the door shut on his mutilated body I said these two last words, “Call me.”
