Motherhood

One afternoon, I was dozing on my deck
When a bird swooped down and gave me a painful peck.

I opened my eyes and let out a shrilling scream
I thought I had awakened from a horrible dream.

I crouched down in an uncomfortable pose
and rubbed my swelling aching nose.

I glanced upward and saw a robin sitting on a wire
she dove down and buzzed my head until she begin to tire.

I ducked as the robin made one last sweeping pass
I was becoming annoyed with the pesky lass.

I moved under the umbrella over the picnic table
I watched as she flew underneath the roof gable.

I made my way over to the corner of the house
creeping silently like an uneasy mouse.

I realized mamma was doing what she knew best
I heard little ones chirping overhead in a nest.
