Kyoto, Japan April to Sept 1989 Yamanaka House

"Mommy....are you okay?" 2 year old Usagi ask her mother.

"I am okay, dear." Jinny says to her daughter.

Jinny has shoulder length curly blonde hair, blue eyes, and like tan skin. She's wearing short sleeve green shirt and green pj bottoms.

Usagi has dark bown slightly wavy shoulder length hair, gray eyes, and pale skin. She's wearing short sleeve pale pink shirt and pink pj bottoms.

"Anyway, please go to bed Usagi."

"Yes, mommy...."

Usagi gave her mom a hug before heading upstairs into her room. Jinny look over her medical papers in the living for a while until Riko brought in the tea.

"Here is some tea." Riko says to her in English.

"Thank you......" Jinny reply.

Riko has straight black hair(goes go her midback and kept as a bun), light tan skin, and brown eyes. She's wearing dark blue kimono, brown obi, and white tabi socks.

"You did not told Usagi about your cancer, did you, Jinny san?"

"She doesn't need to know yet."

"She need to know real soon. You know that the cancer is terminal."

"I know, but she is still too young, Riko."

"Look Jinny san. Usagi may be young, but when she will learn what is death, alright?"

"Okay...."

The next day, Riko had to leave early because since Riko was a former geisha, she teaches girls who would like to become maikos and geishas. When Riko left the house, Jinny woke up, left her bedroom, and heads downstairs. She made herself some toast and rice. While she ate breakfast, Jinny can hear Usagi opening her bedroom door and came downstairs to the kitchen.

"Morning, Usagi." Jinny says to her.

"Morning mommy. Where is obaachan?" Usagi ask.

"She has to teach students remember?"

"Oh okay...."

"Anyway, do you want some toast and rice? You want milk or strawberry milk?

"Yes, I would like some toast, rice and strawberry milk."

Jinny and Usagi ate breakfast together before they heads upstairs to their rooms. Jinny took off her jps and change into short sleeve purple shirt, black knee length demin skirt, and white socks. She made her hair into a messy ponytail before exiting her bedroom. When she enter her daugther's bedroom, Usagi is looking through her closet.

"Did you find any clothes, Usagi?"

"Not yet mommy...."

"Want me to help you?"

"Yes please...."

Jinny help Usagi to find any clothes in the closet. Once they found some, Usagi took off her pjs and change(with the help from her mom) into short sleeve pale blue shirt, purple socks, and purple socks. Once Jinny finish brushing Usagi's hair, she grabs Usagi's backpack before they heads downstairs and clean the dishes. They then put on their shoes and left their house. Jinny is obviously out of place because she is not Japanese. They walk a couple of blocks before they enter the train station and went on the train.

"Mommy.....what are we going to do on my birthday?" Usagi ask.

"Well.....you, me, and your grandmother, probadly go to a resturant if that is ok with you."

"I am okay with it."

"Alright....."

"After riding for 7 minutes, Jinny and Usagi got off the train and walk a couple of blocks to Kyoto International School. As soon they enter the school, Usagi's teacher quickly approach her.

"Morning guys." Brianna Torres says to him.

"Morning..." Jinny reply.

"Morning, Ms. Brianna." Usagi says to her.

Brianna has wavy shoulder length dark brown hair, brown eyes, and tan skin. She's wearing pale green shirt, blue jeans, and worn out tennis shoes.

"Well....I better get going and go to my music classes. Be a good girl, Usagi."

"I will mommy."

Jinny gives Usagi a hug before heading to her classes. Jinny teaches music to the elementry students. Usagi then walk to her homeroom class with Brianna. School is over for preschoolers around 2:30pm, but since Jinny cannot get out school until 3:30pm. So, Usagi's grandmother, Riko, pick her up.

"Did you ate your lunch and snacks?" Riko ask as they walk towards the train station.

"Kinda...." Usagi reply.

"What do you mean kinda?"

"The lunch taste taste weird, obaachan."

"Still......you need to eat ALL your lunch."

"Hai, obaachan."

When Usagi's birthday came around, Riko and Jinny decide to take her to Ryokan for the whole weekend. When Jinny came home from on Friday, she notice that Riko and Usagi are already half way finish packing their clothes.

"You guys already went ahead of me huh?" Jinny says to them.

"Please don't stand there like a idiot, Jinny. You need to pack your stuff too." Riko says to them.

"Yes ma'am." Jinny answer before heading to her room.

Once the ladies finish packing their belongings and exit their house, the taxi is park at front of the house. The taxi driver took their bags and place them in the truck. Jinny, Usagi, and Riko went inside the back of the tax while the driver went to the driver's seat. Soon they head to Ryokan. It is a 25 minute drive but they're finally at Ryokan. As the taxi stop at front of Ryokan and Riko, Jinny, and Usagi get out the taxi, they're greet by Riko's friend and manager, Ishizeki Atsuko

"Welcome. It has been a while, Riko san." Atsuko says to her.

"Same here..." Riko answer back.

Atsuko has light pale skin, brown eyes, and straight black hair(goes to her waist and kept as a low bow). She's wearing brown kimono, yellow obi, white tabi socks, and geta.

"Sir, please bring the ladies's bags and take them to their room." Atsuko says to him.

"Yes ma'am." the driver reply.

Atsuko told him the room number and key. Once the taxi driver disapper, Atsuko led Riko, Jinny, and Usagi to her private room. As they sat down, Atsuko serve them tea while Usagi got a cup of milk.

"So.....you three came here because of Usagi chan's birthday right?" Atsuko ask.

"Hai, Atsuko san." Riko reply.

Jinny simply listen some of the conversation since her japanese is still somewhat average. Usagi, on the other hand, can speak Japanese better than her own mom.

"Usagi chan, how old you going to be?" Atsuko ask.

"I will be 3 years old tomorrow." Usagi reply.

"Is she going to become a maiko?" Atsuko ask.

"No, she isn't. I rather to see her to choose a different path from mine." Riko reply.

Jinny excuse herself before she and Usagi exit the room. They walk to their room and close the door behind them. Their room is a japanese style room. Their bags located in the closets.

"This is where we staying for over a weekend right?" Usagi ask.

"Yes we are." Jinny reply. "Do you want to take a bath while your grandmother talk to her friend?"

"Yes, mommy."

Jinny and Usagi exit their room and head to the women bathhouse. They stay an hour in the bathhouse before heading back to their room. Both of them are wearing yutaka. They look over the menu when Riko enter the room and close the door beind her.

"Have you girls chose your dinner yet?" Riko ask.

"Hai obaachan." Usagi reply. "And we already took a bath at the bathhouse...."

"That is good to hear. You two order dinner while I go and take a bath." Riko says to them.

"Yes ma'am." Jinny reply.

As Riko exit the room, Jinny and Usagi order their dinner. When morning came, Usagi is awaken by her mother.

"Happy birthday, Usagi." Jinny says to her.

"Thank you, mom." Usagi reply before giving her a hug. "Where is obaachan?"

"She is with her friend, Ms. Atsuko."

"Oh okay...."

"Anyway, lets explore around the Ryokan."

"Okay, mommy."

Usagi had fun at the Ryokan with her mother and grandmother. By Sunday afternoon, the taxi finally came. When the taxi driver drove them back to their home, Usagi began to spoke up.

"Obaachan, when I can see daddy?" Usagi ask.

"He is busy, Usagi." Riko answer.

"But I would like to see him."

"Usagi, you can't see him right now. Please understand that."

"Fine..."

From April to June, Jinny grew weak and became thinner due to her cancer, but try her best to hid it from Riko and Usagi. Riko already knew the situation. As for Usagi, she notice her mom is getting tired but did not raise any questions. Then just a few days after summer vacation began, Jinny pass out while she helping Riko cooking lunch in the kitchen.

"Is mommy going to be okay?" Usagi ask.

Usagi and Riko are currently waiting in the waiting room at the local hospital.

Usagi is wearing non sleeve dark green shirt, orange shorts, and tennis shoes.

Riko is wearing maroon kimono, yellow obi, tabi socks, and geta shoes.

"I am not really sure." Riko reply. "You know that your mother is sick right?"

"Kinda...."

"Well....she has a disease which she can never get better from."

"What do do you mean, obaachan?"

"There are a lot of diseases that can kill people. Your mother has cancer and it is terminal."

"Terminal?"

"That means that she is going to die."

"Oh."

"Don't worry, your mother will be in the better place when she passes away."

They wait for over an hour in the waiting room until the doctor enter the room.

"You must be Yamanaka Riko right?" the doctor ask.

"Yes doctor." Riko reply.

"My name is Hara Takao. Please follow me." Hara says to Riko and Usagi.

Riko grabs Usagi's hand before they follow Dr. Hara to his office. Once inside, Riko and Usagi sat the chairs and Dr. Hara sat at his desk.

"Is Jinny san going to be okay?" Riko ask.

"Not really, Yamanaka san. The cancer is already in the finally stages. I believe Jinny san will be gone within a few weeks."

"I see then."

"Do you have any phone numbers of Jinny's releatives?"

"I have her sisters' numbers with me at the moment."

"Please call them and tell them that their sister is dying and don't have much time to live."

"I will sir."

"Can I see my mommy?" Usagi ask.

"Sure you can." Hara answer.

Dr. Hara told them which room is Jinny's room. They says thanks to the doctor before heading to her room. As soon as they enter the room, Usagi quickly ran up to her mom.

"Hi mommy." Usagi says to her.

"Hey Usagi." Jinny reply.

Jinny is wearing a white hospital gown. Jinny's skin look paler than usual and her arms and legs look really thin. Her eyes even have dark circles around them.

"Jinny san. The doctor told me to call your sisters."

"Oh.....I guess I forgot to tell them."

"Jinny, I understand that you don't get along with your sisters, but they need to know that you are dying."

"Alright then. You call them if you are not busy."

"Mommy, when you get out the hospital?"

"I am not sure, Usagi."

Riko and Usagi stay with Jinny for 15 minutes before they head home. On July 13, 1989, Jinny Rona Boyd passed away. Riko, Usagi, and Jinny's 3 sisters(Senga, Aileen, and Lachina) were at the same room when Jinny passed on. Riko,Senga, Aileen, and Lachina decided to turn Jinny into ashes. Riko also want to give Jinny a proper Japanese style funeral. When the funeral finally came on Sunday evening, the teachers and students from Kyoto International School came. About everyone who came to the funeral wore black.

Usagi is wearing a long sleeve black dress and white socks. Usagi wore short sleeve black dress and black socks.

"How long is the funeral, obaachan?" Usagi ask.

"Another hour or so." Riko answer.

"Okay....."

Twenty minutes has gone by and Usagi grew little antsy. Usagi excuse herself and heads to the restroom. That is when Usagi's father(and Riko's son), Masaru, finally came. He is not alone. He is with a woman. They quickly approach Riko after they sign in.

"Hello mother." Masaru says to him.

"Hello Masaru." Riko anwser. "Why you and Sumiko are here?"

"We just want to pay respects to her." Sumiko reply.

Masaru has short raven black hair, brown eyes, and light pale skin. He's wearing a black suit with a black tie and white socks.

Sumiko has slightly wavy black hair(goes to her midback and kept as a low ponytail), brown eyes, and light tan skin. She's wearing non sleeve black dress.

"Look, I would like you two to leave please." Riko says to them.

"But Riko san...." Sumiko says to her.

"Sumiko......can you please return to the car?" Masaru ask.

"Fine...." Sumiko reply before exiting the house.

"Mother.....where is Usagi?" Masaru ask.

"She is in the restroom." Riko answer.

"Can you do a favor for me?"

"What is it, Masaru?"

"Can you adopt Usagi and take care of her?"

"Masaru....you are her father. You should take care of her."

"I know, but if I tell Sumiko that I have a child of a foreigner, she will leave me."

"You know what? Please get out of this house now Masaru."

"But mom...."

"No buts. I don't want to see you for a while."

Masaru bow before quickly exit the house. Riko let out a sigh before heading upstairs. That where she found Usagi sleeping on her bed. A day after the funeral, Senga, Aileen, and Lachina took Jinny's ashes and head back to Scotland. Usagi felt sad that her mother has to go to her home. Riko decide to tranfers Usagi from Kyoto International school to a local preschool named Happy Roses. While Usagi went to school, Riko went to court after a few weeks, she took full custody of Usagi Jinny Yamanaka. Usagi and Riko stayed in Kyoto until Usagi finish kindergarden. Then they pack up their stuff and head to Osaka for 4 years before moving to Tokyo.

Author's Notes: This story is rewritten of Rose Red. I really don't like the direction of Rose Red is going. So, I deleted Rose Red and and rewrite it. This time, you guys will meet Jinny(Usagi's mom) and Sumiko(Masaru's wife). Anyway read and review if you are not busy
