Just One Word

"This is it." Julia thought.

School had just resumed; she didn't know why she was so eager to have her heart broken again. Whose idea was it to have a dance as soon as school started? And whose idea was it to make her fall in love with Ryan Schmitz, the only guy in school who would be concerned with keeping her heart unbroken? Whoever they were, depending on if this turned out the way she wanted it to or not, she might just have to have hunted them down and killed them the next day.

She shook her head, now was not the time. After he said 'no' it would be the time. Because who was she kidding by thinking he'd say yes? No one, that's who. She briefly wondered why she was even asking him when she knew what would happen. Maybe part of her head wasn't quite jaded enough to give up hope just yet. Or it might have been that she believed fate would give her a break since she had handled the rest of the days emergencies with good graces.

Too soon, she had to stop thinking and start talking. She was at the library, after all, where else would a nerd hang out? The problem was, as soon as she got there, so did a few of her friends. Those friends then began to talk to her and her prospective date, and about homecoming no less. She knew she didn't have much time. Ryan had to go in about five minutes.

"Can I talk to you for a second?" She asked him.

"Sure." He said.

The two of them went into the bowels of the library in between a couple shelves of books. She took a deep breath. It was the moment of truth.

"Willyougotohomecomingwithme?" She asked.

"Smooth" she thought.

He thought for a good long time. Every single second, it seemed as though Julia's heart was about to explode from anxiety. She felt like a deer in the headlights. Each heartbeat just went faster and faster. The way her blood was rushing through her veins also did nothing for the fact that Ryan was right in front of her, and he was just so hot when he was thinking hard like that, and-

"Yes." He said.

"What did you say?" She asked. Maybe she had heard wrong due to her pulse pounding in her ears, but it sounded as though he had said-

"Yes, Julia, I will go to homecoming with you."

For a moment, she felt her heart stop. There was no way. She must have fainted and was now having a dream.

Ryan touched her gently on the hand. She felt it. It couldn't be a dream. "Erm... Do you want to talk again tomorrow to work out the details? It seems like you could use a break and it's the end of the day, so, well... bye."

"Yeah. See you."

He left, and she was glad he did. At that moment, she had a sudden urge to scream into her backpack. He had said yes, he had said yes!

It was one word, but it made Julia happier than all the other words anyone had ever said to her combined.
