Ignorance Is Your New Best Friend

Chapter 1

“Come on, Damon!” Damon and I were eleven years old, we were heading to the park and I was ahead of Damon quite a bit. I looked back and saw him closer to me then earlier.

“Why are we going to the park? You know they’re all just gonna make fun of us again.” Damon complained.

“The park is fun. Why do you care what they think though? Weren’t you the one who told me not to care about what others think of me?” I asked, reminding Damon of his own words.

“Yea, I guess. Aren’t you tired of everyone making fun of us though?”

“Yea, but I’m not going to let it stop me from going to the park with my best friend.”

“Alright, then lets go.” Damon responded and he picked up his pace and we headed to the park.

When we got to the park there were only a couple of other kids, but we ignored them and just played on the swings, randomly talking. A couple of times Damon pushed me and gave me under doggies. However, when the kids started teasing he stopped and sat on the other swing. Something was up with Damon.

After a while we decided to head back to my house.

“It sucks that you’re moving in a little bit.” Damon said quietly.

“Yea, but Dad wants me to live with him for a bit. Besides, I haven’t seen my dad since my parents split up.” I responded.

“True, but it still sucks.”

“Yea, but promise me something?” I asked.

“Sure.” Damon responded.

“Promise we’ll remain best friends, forever, okay?”

“Promise.” Damon replied.

A little while later we were back at my house and we went up to my room. Damon helped me pack up a few things. When we heard the doorbell ring we ran downstairs and my Mom and Dad were in the hall talking. Shortly after my Dad went to my room to get some of my bags and my Mom helped him out.

Before Dad and I left Damon’s Mom came to pick him up and we said our goodbyes, giving a hug. After they left I said goodbye to my Mom and my Dad and I left.

I woke up from my dream; it was weird, in a way. It all happened but it seemed so sudden to have this dream. Sure, I moved back in with my Mom now, but it was still weird.

By now my Mom had already remarried, so I was living with her, Richard, my step-father now, and Richard’s kids, Alex, who was my age, seventeen, and Sabrina, who was eight.

School was also starting now and I wasn’t entirely ready for it. Sure, it was my final year, but it was bound to be stressful. Not to mention the fact that the only person who would know me, aside from Alex, was Damon and we haven’t seen each other in years. I just wasn’t ready for it all.

“Alisa, have you gotten anything for school, it starts Tuesday.” My Mom asked, coming into my room.

“No, not really. I just have the stuff I had from last year.” I responded.

“Well that’s not good.” Mom replied before she handed me her debit card. “Take this, the pin is your birth date. Month then day. I’ll get Alex to take you; he needs a few things also.” Mom replied before she walked out of my room and called out for Alex.

Shortly after Alex came into my room.

“I don’t want to be long.” Alex said annoyed.

“Don’t worry about it. I don’t really need a lot of things, besides, I hate shopping.” I replied grabbing my purse.

“What girl hates shopping?” Alex asked.

“This one.” I responded walking past him and out into the hall.

“Weird.” He muttered and followed me down the stairs.

“Although, I do want to look in the music store.” I said suddenly.

“I have no problems with that.” He replied.

“Alright, well let’s go.” I said and opened the front door. “We’ll be back in a bit!” I called out and left the house, heading to Alex’s car and he followed behind me, unlocking his car.

The car ride to the mall was quiet, however when we got there Alex spoke.

“I’m walking around for a bit, give me your cell number so I can call you when I’m ready, okay?” he asked and I nodded before I told him my number.

“See you later then.” I responded and got out of his car walking towards the mall entrance.

The first store I went into was Bluenotes, simply because I needed jeans and that’s where I would usually get my jeans from. After I found a pair I headed over to HMV to see what CDs they had out.

“Need any help finding anything?” a worker asked me as I was looking around. He was about my age and pretty attractive looking, dark hair and bright green eyes. You could easily tell he had a toned body, but it wasn’t too toned or anything.

“No, just looking.” I responded and he nodded before walking away.

“Hey man, what’s up?” a guys voice said and it was pretty loud that it got me curious. I looked over to the voices and saw that Alex was talking to the employee who was asking if I needed any help.

“Working, obviously.” The guy replied.

I tried to ignore them and look at the CDs but the voices were pretty loud and hard to ignore.

“Fun,” Alex responded sarcastically.

“Yea, what about you?”

“Lillian wanted me to get school supplies and some other bullshit.” Alex responded.

“I don’t get why people insist on getting new stuff every year, unless you actually need it.”

“Exactly what I thought. Instead I’m just wandering around the mall, waiting for my step-sister to finish up.” Alex responded.

Guess he didn’t notice I was in here.

“Your step-sisters back?”

“Yea, she’s around somewhere.” Alex replied in a bored tone. “Or in here.” Alex said suddenly.

Guess he saw me.

I heard people walking over here and then I heard Alex’s voice next to me.

“Hey, what are you doing in here?” he asked me.

I turned around and faced him, smiling at him before replying. “Well, earlier I said I wanted to look in the music store. Seeing as HMV is a music store I must be…what exactly? Oh, right. Looking around.” I responded.

“What are you looking for? Clearly you’re looking in Metal so…” Alex trailed off.

“I’m just looking around. Maybe seeing about getting a CD, but it depends. What’s it to you?” I asked.

“Don’t you have your mom’s money?” Alex asked curiously.

“Yea, but I have some money of my own. I did have a job at my dad’s place and I did save up money.” I responded. “Anyway, as lovely as this chat is, really, I would like to get back to looking around without being interrupted.” I added in annoyed.

“Yea, whatever. However, if you are looking for anything in particular, Damon here is pretty good at finding things, he knows this store off by heart pretty much.”

“Damon?” I asked curious.

“Yea, that’s him.” Alex responded pointing to the worker.

“Damon, as in Damon Williams, by chance?” I asked curiously.

“Uh, yea.” Damon responded. “Do I know you?”

“Depends.” I responded quietly. “Do you remember your best friend Alisa Christie?” I asked.

“Alisa?” Damon asked shocked. “You’re Alex’s step-sister?”

“Yea,” I responded.

“Wait, you two know each other?” Alex asked confused.

“Well, we have been best friends since kindergarten.” I responded.

“Yea, we have.” Damon responded, nodding.

“I’ve gotta say that that is weird.” Alex replied.

“Perhaps,” I muttered. “Damon, how’s your family?” I asked curious.

“Fine, but anyway, sorry. I gotta get back to work. If my boss catches me talking he’ll freak.” Damon said suddenly. “See you both later.” He said before walking away to another customer.

That was kind of weird.

“Best friends, eh?” Alex asked.

“Yea.”

“Sure seems like it.” Alex responded sarcastically.

“We haven’t seen each other in years.” I responded defensively.

“Yea, well Damon’s probably changed a lot since then.” Alex replied, picking up a CD and looking at it.

“Probably,” I muttered.

“It’s okay, maybe you’ll still remain friends.” Alex responded placing the CD back down and looking at another one.

“We promised.” I mumbled quietly.

“What?” Alex asked.

“Nothing.” I responded. “I think I’m done shopping.”

“Alright, then let’s go.” Alex responded putting the CD down and we walked out of the store, Alex shouting out a ‘Later,’ to Damon.

Well, that was pretty awkward. Hope its not always like that…

When Alex and I got home I headed straight up to my room and put on my iPod and grabbing a book to read. Whatever happened I was not going to think about the awkwardness between Damon and I earlier today.
