Chapter Seven
Let’s Dance
I just stood there for a moment as I watched Cain walk away, was that really it? Was I supposed to go after him? I decided I should. And I hurried before I lost complete sight of him.
“Cassidy!” I quickly turned around and saw Allen, I looked back to search for Cain, he was heading out the door.
“Cassidy?”
I looked back to Allen, and then to the door, he was gone.
“Are you okay?” he asked concerned. I didn’t answer immediately, I was still torn, should I just leave Allen or run after Cain, but what if he wasn’t out there anymore? But I sighed and smiled at Allen.
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Are you sure?” he asked not looking convinced.
“I’m fine Allen, what’s up?”
“I was just wondering if you’d want to dance.” He asked like he still wasn’t sure.
But Allen was so cute, I smiled at him and took his hand, “Yeah, let’s dance.”
He grinned and led me out on to the dance floor and we danced for a while. But my mind wasn’t really on Allen, it was on Cain. He hadn’t come back inside or at least I hadn’t seen him.
I searched for him and though about asking around, but I knew that no one would really be helpful. All the girls were already sending me death glares. But I didn’t give up. I walked around the inside maybe four times, before I decided just to watch from the sidelines.
My eyes strayed for person to person, what they were doing. My eyes settled on one stunningly beautiful girl. She was standing alone. Surely she wasn’t here alone, was she? She looked gorgeous, how could no one notice her.
I decided to walk up to her. I stood next to her and she glanced at me but looked away quickly.
“Are you alone?” I asked her eventually.
She looked over at me and gave a slight nod.
“You’re Cassidy, right?” she asked in the softest, most delicate voice I’d ever heard.
I smiled, “yeah, and you are?”
“Nicole.” She said smiling brightly.
“Nice to meet you.”
We stood there in a comfortable silence for a moment. But I was looking at her through my hair. She was small, maybe an inch or so shorter than I, and her long black hair reached the middle of her back. Her white dress hugged the small curves that she had. Her skin was pale and her eyes were almost black, framed by long, dark eyelashes.
I noticed her eyes were focused on one thing. So I followed her line of sight and saw who exactly it was she was staring at because he towered over almost everyone else. Who was it? None other than Nate.
“Do you like him?” I asked her.
She looked at me wide eyes and blushed furiously. “I-, I-“
I smiled at here, “You want to dance with him?”
“Yeah right.” She said with her eyes falling to the floor. “I’ve liked him since seventh grade, and I go to every single dance dressed my best to try and impress him, but he never notices me.”
“Well,” I said, “it’s definitely not because you aren’t beautiful, because you’ve definitely got that down.”
Her shade of red got darker and she thanked me softly.
“Hold on a second.” I said with a grin. She looked up at me again, “Wait-“
But I was already making my way over to Nate. Finding Cain suddenly didn’t matter, making sure that Nicole had at least one dance with Nate was my first priority.
“Nate!”
“Cassidy, where have you been? I saw you dancing with Kale, and then with Cain and then you disappeared.”
“I have a habit of doing that.” I reminded him. “Anyway, that’s not the point, you remember you asked me if I could find a girl that genuinely liked you?”
He nodded, “Did you find one?” he was suddenly excited.
“I might have.” I told him truthfully. “She has had a crush on you since seventh grade, and goes to every dance looking gorgeous hoping that you notice her, but you never do.”
“Well if she’d gorgeous how do I not notice her?”
“Well,” I paused for a moment, “She’s kind of short…”
“Oh.” He said. “Height doesn’t matter, where is she?”
“She’s the one with the white dress and the long black hair leaning against the wall over there.”
I tried to point her out without being obvious.
“What’s her name?” he asked.
“Nicole.”
He smiled and hugged me, “let’s see how this works out.”
“What did you just do?” Angie said with a smile. Ian had his arms wrapped around her waist.
“Found your brother the love of his life.”
I was watching now as Nate, towering over Nicole, led her out on to the dance floor for a slow song. She looked extremely happy and smiled at me.
“She looks so small next to him.” Angie said smiling.
“Ha! She’s smaller than me!”
“Stupid short people.” Angie muttered.
“I like you just the way you are.” Ian said and kissed her cheek; she smiled and reached up to ruffle his hair.
I walked outside, leaving the dance like I had planned to do when I tried to follow Cain. The air was freezing, I immediately had chills. But I didn’t go back inside. It was a shock and woke me up. Maybe it’d help me think clearer.
“You look cold,”
I turned around and there was Cain. He shrugged off his blazed and draped it around my shoulders.
“Thanks…” I mumbled.
He stood next to me without saying anything.
“You want to leave?” he asked me suddenly.
I looked at him quizzically.
“I’d ask if you want to go get ice cream, but I figure it’s a little too cold for that.” He smiled.
“I’ll take hot chocolate.” I said looking down, hugging his jacket just a little closer.
He smiled at me, “Alright. I’ll go get my bike.”
“Bike in a dress?” I asked.
He looked me up and down, “Why not?”
My eyes widened. He laughed, “I missed you Cass. You look great.”
“Are we suddenly not mad at each other anymore?”
“I was never mad-“
“Never mad?”
“Let me finish, never mad, just irritated.”
I rolled my eyes, “Right, go get your bike.”
He nodded and began to walk off, leaving me there in his warm blazer suddenly feeling a lot better, happier, almost all better. Things might go back to normal.
I was out there for a few minutes waiting, kind of shivering, wondering how cold I was going to be on that bike.
“Cassidy.”
I turned around and saw Kale.
“Hey.” I smiled, “What are you doing here?”
He cornered me against the wall. “Kale?” he didn’t do anything, just stared at me. “Kale, what are you doing?”
“This.”
He leaned down and kissed me. My eyes were wide with shock, I didn’t know what to do, or how to react, but finally it go through my head and I pulled away from him.
“Well, I guess Kale can take you for hot chocolate.” I looked past Kale and Cain was standing there next to his bike with his helmet under his arm.
“Cain-“
“It’s fine.” He said and got on his bike, riding off.
I felt tears well up in my eyes. Damn it Kale! Just when things were going to be fixed.
“Cassidy?”
I looked up at Kale, and a tear escaped my eye. He looked surprised. And I slapped him.
A/N: Gasp! Kale kissed her! He ruined it! Oh no! What will happen next? Don’t worry :]
For those of you that think Cassidy’s life is too perfect, I made it that way because I wish my life was that perfect. Haha, things do get tougher for her though as time goes on, so chill out will ya?
