they were friends.

she sat with him every day without fail. always in the same spot; always at the same time. sometimes they talked, and other times they just sat there, looking at the outside world from the distance of the world they sat in.

one day, she noticed that he never looked her in the eye.

she always looked at him when she talked. often, she looked at him when neither of them spoke. but when he talked to her, he never made eye contact. he looked near her, above her--or, sometimes, right on through.

and so, one day, she wondered what would happen if she didn't come back.
