Reformers Unanimous Essay Report:
"Matthew 5:41-47"
Here Christ teaches us what true, biblical, Godly love is and how it applies to our lives. The world's idea of love is nothing more than an emotion you feel for a special person that comes and goes. Scripturally, love is self-sacrifice for the benefit of other people without though or even desire of something in return. The greatest example of this is Christ's sacrifice for us. Here it talks about feeding your enemies, doing good to them, praying for them, but Christ Himself not only did those things for us, but He also died for His enemies while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). Yet He still endured wrongful suffering, abuse, and insults hurled at Him, all because He loved us. God tells us Christians that we should love others in the same way. We should love others no matter what they do to us, good or bad, and be willing to sacrifice even ourselves for them. Christ said giving your life for your friends was the greatest love man can have. He took it a step further and died for his enemies. How many of us would do that? This tells us that we have a long way to go in regards to truly loving others. Loving someone that doesn't love you, that may even hate you. The world loves their own, and hates God and His people, so how would we be any different if the only ones we loved where Christians? A true Christian will strive to love others as God loves them, showing compassion, mercy, kindness, just as He did towards us.
