It was the year 2002, when an undiscovered virus came into existance. The virus was first discovered when a soldier stationed over seas brought it back home to the United States when he was on leave. He saw many horrors while serving in the military, but nothing could have prepaired him for what would happen to him. His skin had become much more pale then normal, and his aggression level elevated considerably. He was taken to the hospital, but after the doctors could find nothing, he was sent for tests at the Military lab. There, results showed there was a foreign protein in his blood, one that had no known origin. The scientists originally thought the proteins were harmless. All it seemed to do was mutate the muscle tissue, making it stronger. And even though it increased aggression, it seemed to be perfect for creating better soldiers. But, there was never a long term study done on the virus.
If a study had been done on the virus, there would never have been the chaos that began, about two months after the military started infecting other soldiers. The virus spread much more rapidly then expected, not only to the US military, but to those of other countries. It kept spreading from there, to civilians all over, becoming a worldwide epidemic. As it spread, it mutated rapidly, creating a monster with every new infected person. Populations began to decrease, with the human race starting to kill itself off. Homo sapiens were endangering their own species, infecting each other, becoming like savages, wild animals, just living for the next kill, the next taste of blood.
Once someone is infected, they are no longer human: in mind or in body. All of their skin begins to turn a sickly gray. Their eyes seem to sink into their sockets, their faces thinning until they appear deformed and almost skull-like. They start to almost 'shrink,' losing height in the spine, which seems to then go to elongating the arms and legs. After the body's frame seems to shift to one that is Gruesome and disproportionate, their muscles change very quickly. In no time, the muscles become tighter and stronger, growing in size and thickness. Not only does it scare those who are infected, it is a terrible horror to behold, especially when it becomes the inevitable fate of a loved one.
Once a person has contact with any one who is infected, they are marked for death. No one is immune to the virus, no one is able to return to their original human state. Once the person is infected, they are unclean and as good as dead. The incubation time is short, leaving very little time to try and get away from loved ones, to try and protect them from the monster about to burst free.
To try and avoid the infected, many people moved to Civilian Compounds, walled cities built to protect those who are left. The Military rules the compounds, fighting the infected and trying to protect the civilians, and provide them with the supplies they need. But it isn't that simple. The infected have such strenght and blood lust, it is very difficult to keep them out. And the virus can live on surfaces for over a week, meaning it is easier to catch it without infected to civilian contact. As hard as the military fights there is no vaccine to prevent it, no cure to stop it. It seemed as thought it would be the end of the world...
