A/N: This chapter, I realize is slightly short. But bear with me :]
Chapter Four
Differences
I was brushing my teeth. Though it was called morning sickness, it struck at anytime of day. And right now it was lunch at school. There went my hopes for never having to throw up at school. Brushing my teeth in the dirty girls bathroom was almost as horrible as leaning over that disgusting bacteria infested toilet bowl.
People that walked in just gave me an odd look. But I shrugged it off; maybe I just liked to keep my teeth clean? I put my toothbrush back in the zip-lock bag and shoved it in my backpack.
I left the bathroom and found Carmen sitting on a bench a few feet away, she was waiting for me. I’d told her I had to pee, but I’d taken so long I knew she figured it out. She immediately stood up, “Are you alright?” she asked concerned, “Why didn’t you tell me you were going to puke? I would have helped you, besides, how often have I puked on you?”
I shook my head and tried to give her a reassuring smile, but I was so tired, it probably didn’t do much. “I’m fine.”
She didn’t believe me but she didn’t say anything, she just sighed and matched my slow pace as we walked back to the lunch table.
“Are you okay Hayden? You look really tired.” Pat said sounding concerned.
I yawned and nodded, “I think I’m developed insomnia.” I lied.
“You should ask a doctor, they have medication for that.”
“You want me to take drugs Pat?” I feigned disbelief.
He rolled his eyes and shook his head.

I had decided that it was time to tell Darren, I had slightest little bump on my normally flat stomach, I’d shown Carmen, she’d taken a picture and measured it, said it was for memories.
But anyways, back to telling Darren, I wouldn’t be able to hide it much longer, besides, with in a few weeks I wouldn’t be able to hide it anyways.
I found him after school and took a deep breath.
“Darren!”
He spun around and looked surprised to see me, “Hey, what’s up Hayden?”
“I, um, I needed to talk to you for a sec.”
He gave me a confused look, and was about to open his mouth to speak, when his name was called out again.
We both looked to see who it was. As she got closer I had a sick feeling in my stomach, I was almost afraid I’d puke on him, but I didn’t.
This girl was gorgeous, around my height and slender with almost waist length, styled and curled hair. Her eyes were dark and framed by long eyelashes, and her lips seemed naturally curved into a sassy smile.
She wrapped her arms around Darren and he leaned down to kiss her. This was his girlfriend? The gorgeous, hot, girl that I had never seen before in my life? She was on a whole other level than I was. She looked like she could be famous.
I tried not to gape, successfully. Darren put an arm around her tiny waist and he looked back at me, “Hayden, this is my girlfriend Melissa.”
I smiled at her, “Nice to meet you.”
She nodded; “So you’re Hayden?” she said with a smile, “Darren told me about you, said you were a good friend of his.”
I laughed, “Yeah, something like that.”
“So what were you going to tell me?” Darren asked, tilting his beautiful head to the side.
I smiled and said, “Oh nothing important, I’ll see you guys later, alright?”
Melissa nodded and smiled, “Nice to meet you Hayden!”
I nodded, and before I turned to walk away, I couldn’t help but notice the concerned look on Darren’s face.
I drove to Carmen’s house. I felt like crying, but I didn’t.
“She was beautiful.” I said staring at her ceiling. “I don’t even know how he could have slept with me when he had a girl like that.”
Carmen sighed as she painted her toenails. “Did you tell him?” she asked.
“No, I couldn’t just as I was about to Melissa showed up.”
“That sucks.”
“No kidding.”
Darren was probably head over heels in love with her now. She was beautiful, nice and seemed smart too. He probably saw so much in her he didn’t see in me. She had all that going for her while I was just kind of plain, I had my sweet moments, but I was sarcastic a lot as well, and I was raised in a house full of men for most of my life, I wasn’t the girly-est thing on the planet either.
Oh well. It is what it is.
