Sounds Like Life to Me
It’s the long days of sweat and strained muscles,
where the words “I’m fine” repeat from stubborn lips
because no sickness could keep me from
the smell of hay and oncoming storms
and the idea of forever that’s clear in your eyes;
It's how early mornings become bearable with Dunkin’ Donuts
and those damn country songs my family hates,
but I’ll play them over and over just to remember
the rides home that took a few hours too long
all because the mountains look better from the hood of a pickup
and summer nights are just too perfect to waste.
It’s the seconds it takes to catch my breath
and thoughts that always seem to go back
to cool nights and fears of the dark
while a starry sky is missed behind clouds
you swore wouldn’t bring rain, but there we are;
soaked and dirty, all because life is strange
and fate was never something to believe in.
Until I met you.
