Will you be Coming Back?

By: Faithmemory

The town owns a summer feeling, with the homes compressed on a single area, with only pathways that separates them. The town is silent and well preserve. And because of its old-fashioned and preserved image it reflects every single person living there, just like a typical rural town.

The fresh soothing swing of the sea breeze circulates around the town alone. It was a summery afternoon; the people are at home, the elderly most especially. The whole town is covered by the pumpkin color of that time of the day. No one attempts to dispute with the bright sun above the town that made them hide at their homes. The children along with the teenagers of the town are only on a single school.

Edo High, a simple school that everyone attends, even though it looks like a really aged, the school still has the ability to teach their students well. And a school that has the power to transfer their students to a better university in Tokyo, if they are bright and smart.

That afternoon, the voices of the teachers of the classrooms could be heard well at the school lobby. The children who are reading all together with eagerness to learn echoes at the school hallway, indeed a very busy afternoon. But at the rooftop, two wayward teens are busy as well.

“Have you heard the news?” a red-haired guy said, who is lying at the roof’s warm floor, stretching his arms in the air.

“About what?” a girl asked back, who is lying at his side with brown short hair scattered at her head.

Silence was felt as the two, with closed eyes, senses the warm passing of the sea breeze in the west. The gentle whisper of the wind relieves them both.

The girl, Hyori, opens her eyes, “Is it about Tatsuya’s approval for Tokyo?” she whispered.

Kyosuke rises up and starts stretching around, “Gahh, what a drowsy afternoon…”

Hyori sat and place a look at Kyosuke who is still doing the stretches as he looks at the sea.

“Still skipping classes, huh?” a large voice was heard

The two turned their heads and saw Tatsuya standing in the doorway, with glasses and black hair. “I thought I told you guys to quit skipping school hours.”

“Ah! Tatsuya!” Kyosuke greeted loudly, “Let me guess, its launch break already, right?”

Tatsuya ignored what Kyosuke said, he went to Hyori and lay down beside her and faced the sky with closed eyes.

Kyosuke burst into laughter, “Ha-ha! Look at you, you’re a mess…” he teased.

Hyori stares at the resting Tatsuya, who seems to enjoy the calming breeze. She then bows her head, “Are you really going to Tokyo?” she asked with a crack of her voice, "So... you'll leave us then..."

Kyosuke was shocked, “So straight forward…” he thought. And silence was then again felt.

It didn’t alarm Tatsuya at all; instead he calmly opened his eyes and stares at the sky. His face was plain, troubled less and thoughtless.

From the back, Kyosuke grabbed Hyori’s right arm and pulls her to stand. Hyori was so eager to know what Tatsuya will say, but it's impossible to know now. She has the thought of not to ask those kinds of things when the three of them are together, but it didn't happen.

“Hyori-yah! Our class will start soon…” Kyosuke said effortlessly pulling Hyori and picking up her bag, “See you soon, Tatsuya.”

The three of them are good friends, childhood friends. They were always looking out for each other. Both Tatsuya and Kyosuke are looking after Hyori, and she cares more to the two of them because for her, her grandmother, Tatsuya and Kyosuke are the most important persons.

The sun is setting, and everyone only desires for one thing, to go home. The quiet and drowsy town earlier became much lively. Children runs around, enjoying the end of the day, parents are there holding hand in hand with their children.

“You’re spacing out again…” Kyosuke said, moving his bicycle forward and backward, referring to Hyori who is leaning on a tree and looking out of nowhere.

She was startled by him; “Sorry…” she apologized, and then looks around.

Kyosuke stared at her for a while, “As long as you’re with me, you can space out as much as you want…” he said.

She looked at him, for a second or two they were staring at each other and was only broken when Hyori smiled, that made Kyosuke feel a bit embarrassed of what he just said.

“Where is he? His class should already be finish at this time…” Kyosuke started.

Hyori then looks around, “Try giving him a call?”

Kyosuke took his phone on his pocket, dialed up some numbers and heard it ringing. Hyori went close to him to hear if Tatsuya will pick up the phone. It ringed four times, and at the fifth, at last he answered.

Hello?”

“Oi, Tatsu? We’re here at the tree in front of the school gate. What time will you be dismissed?”

Didn’t I leave you a message? You didn’t receive it?”

“What a message? No… I haven’t got any message from you.”

Is that so… I’m already at home…”

“WHAT???” Kyosuke shouted, that made Hyori curious, “What did he said?” she asked.

“Ahm… Tatsu, pal, hold on a sec.” Kyosuke said, hid the phone at his back and pushed Hyori away.

“Hey!! Why?!” she asked, becoming more curious, “Where is he?!”

“Yah! Hyori-yah! Wait here…” Kyosuke replied, came down his bicycle and walks away from her, that made Hyori more and more probing.

Far from her, he continues talking to Tatsuya.

“What are you doing?! You came home ahead of us?!” he whispered on the phone.

Yeah… why?”

Kyosuke paused, “You—why?!”

Sorry, I need to hang up now; I still have a lot of things to do…”

“Like what? What are you doing? We, the three of us always ride our bicycles in going home together! We’re always been like that since we were little, but, you—why now?!”

Let’s just talk another time… Bye.”

And the busy phone line was heard. Kyosuke was mad for a second but when he turns around and saw the clueless Hyori looking back at him, he couldn’t feel anymore.

He went to her and looked straight at her, “You—I want you to promise me, not to ask anything…” he said looking so serious.

“Kyosuke…” she murmured.

“Just promise me!” he yelled.

Without even thinking, Hyori nodded her head. Kyosuke hoped on his bicycle, “Come on, let’s go home…”

Hyori’s eyes are widened, “Wha—“she was cut off by her promise. Not to ask anything… a stupid promise, “Where is Tatsuya?” she just thought to herself.

She rode the bicycle with Kyosuke paddling, she couldn’t ask anything. Kyosuke knows her too much. He knows that she is the type of person that keeps her promises. He doesn’t want to tell her about Tatsuya got home already, because, even thought it is just that… it will truly break Hyori’s heart.

The color of the setting sun shades their way back home. Kyosuke paddling and in deep thought, while, Hyori who is still curious and speechless, is staring at the sunset at the west as she hugs his back. She already has the thought that, it is better not to know what they talked about over the phone.

“Kyosuke… stop!!” Hyori ordered. Without hesitation he stopped, at the middle of the lake, with the huge sun.

“I didn’t know that the sun could give off such a wonderful color…” she said silently.

Kyosuke placed a look at the sun at their side. And felt a bit nostalgic.

“Yeah... I didn’t know either…” he said, “that the sun could give off such a sad color…”
