A girl followed her uncle through the marketplace, sighing with boredom. He smiled and handed her a basket of lettuce to set up at their stall. Once a week they would do this, and every time the girl would get tired of sitting on a blanket trying to sell vegetables from their garden. This time, she decided, would be different. She glanced at her uncle to see that he was turned away, and ran. If she had been listening very hard, she would have heard the man laugh and say goodbye without turning around.
“Hey!” A voice called from a flower stall.
“What?” She responded loudly, picking her way through the crowd towards the voice.
“My name’s Peter.” A young man introduced himself, parting some flowers to look at her.
“I’m Lily.” She replied, sticking her hand through a bunch of daisies for him to shake.
“Like the flower?”
“Uh huh.”
“Lilies are one of my favorites, you know. We just grew a whole new kind. They’re like a gold-purple color. Would you like to see one?” He asked kindly.
“Yes. I would very much like to see one.”
“Good.”
Peter reached a hand around and pulled her through a hidden opening, letting Lily stare around in amazement as he searched for the special flowers. All around them were bursts of color and life, and Lily could barely believe her eyes when she saw it. The light scent of many different flowers, instead of being suffocating, was refreshing, and she closed her eyes. Rain began to sprinkle down lightly and the flowers soaked it up, seeming to brighten even more.
“This is the lily I was talking about.” Peter whispered, breaking the peaceful silence.
“It’s...it’s beautiful.” The girl said softly, lightly stroking one of the petals.
The flower in Peter’s hand was light purple with a golden sheen. Its petals were soft and almost translucent. A fiery gold center seemed to light up the whole bloom and the green stem was slim and sturdy. The whole flower was delicate, more like a fairy than a flower. Peter, holding the lily, was like part of the plants. His eyes lit up whenever he saw a flower or even touched a leaf. In Lily’s opinion, his eyes at that moment were like the sun. She couldn’t help but gasp at the beauty around her. Little did she know, Peter was thinking the exact same thing.
