wondering where you are
wondering who you’re with
wondering what you’re doing
you fascinate me so much

yet if I saw you there, with her, doing what you do,
everything
would suddenly seem wrong,
just as it seems every time I see you for real:

the face on the picture that smiles that beguiling smile
isn’t yours;
neither is the face that grins and frowns and ponders
every Wednesday afternoon.

If I should ever see your face; your real, naked face
in the hard, grey light of a coffee-stained hallway

(there, with her, doing what you do),

you [who] fascinate[d] me so much*

(wondering where you are
wondering who you’re with
wondering what you’re doing)

everything

would suddenly seem

wrong,

just as it seems every time I see you

for real:

* the face on the picture that smiles that beguiling smile [isn’t yours];
[neither] is the face that grins and frowns and ponders (every Wednesday afternoon).
