Dubious Battle

Everyday for me

Is a dubious battle

Because honestly

I’m afraid of the world

It’s not as simple as it seems

When your little

They tell you a simple lie

You can do anything

So

Naturally

You want to be

A princess ballerina doctor veterinarian artist

Because

You’ve been told

You can do anything

A simple lie

But sometimes it’s hard

To do even the simplest things

It’s a dubious battle

Because you never know

What move is going to send you falling

I make a bad tightrope walker

Because I can’t help looking down

And seeing how far I can fall

Life is so uncertain

Day after day

Sometimes you just want to give up

But you can’t

It’s our

Dubious battle

But I swear

That I’ll never tell my kid

That she can be

Whatever she wants to be

At least I’ll instill some practicality

And not let her believe

That she can be

A princess ballerina doctor veterinarian artist

I’ll tell her

That life is a

Dubious battle

And never know

What’s going to happen
