alright, new story. okay, first things first: this is in England. school here is different, we leave school at, like, sixteen going on seventeen. prefects are basically students who are given different ties to the rest, and are in charge of various things, like keeping the one way system maintained, well in my school anyway.

from what i have experienced, am experiencing, as soon as someone turns sixteen in my year, or someone i know, they immediately start smoking, having sex, acting like their mature.

this is a story all about peer pressure, a virgin, smoking, drugs, drinking and sex.

please review, constructive criticism. enjoy!

Edge of Sixteen: The Virgin Diary

Prelude:

When I turned sixteen everything seemed to change. Being sixteen didn’t feel much different from being fifteen, or fourteen for that matter. Sixteen only had one thing to it that fifteen and fourteen didn’t, and that was the allowance to smoke and have sex without being classed as underage. Not that I had been thinking about sex, I’m pretty headstrong, I don’t think about things like that – or, I didn’t, until I got a box of condoms for my birthday.

I know how that looks. Trust me; I wasn’t too thrilled to see it. I mean, what virgin wants a box of condoms for her birthday? Unless she is planning on having sex, which, I wasn’t! But what happened after that just … well it just got me thinking about my age and the new horizons I could discover, so to speak.

Come on, what else is a sixteen year old supposed to think about?

Chapter One –

Notes to self:
Boxes can be deceiving.
Cybersex is safe; you can’t get pregnant, or an STD – and you don’t waste condoms.

It was the second week back of our last school term. We had seven months left until college.

I walked in through the gates, freezing cold with my scarf wrapped around my neck. My friends were stood inside the bike shed, as usual, Halley was smoking a cigarette, Judy was stood with her arms folded, probably sulking because Halley wouldn’t let her have a puff on the cig, and Luke was leaning against the door, rolling a cigarette.

“Why are you smiling?” Judy asked. I knew she was messing with me; Judy and I have been best friends since our before lives, she knows my birthday date of by heart.

“I don’t know. I woke up this morning and there were a load of presents waiting for me downstairs.” I replied with my best nonchalant voice. Luke chuckled lazily from beside us. “Maybe it’s my birthday.”

“Oh, well…that must be what this is for.” Judy winked her right eye, which, like the left one, was heavily lined with black kohl and mascara. I squealed as I took the box from her hand; it was powder blue, neatly wrapped, and when I opened it, there was a white gold necklace, with a small heart and a ruby red gemstone in the corner. It was gorgeous. I put it on immediately.

“You’re so lovely.” I said as I hugged her. I turned to Halley; she’s Judy’s cousin. They’re pretty close even though they don’t seem it at school, but they do live in the same house. I guess they’re like sisters to each other.

“You know I don’t care about your birthday.” Halley muttered with a small smile as she pulled a small, soft wrapped gift from her pocket. It was crumpled, but the decoration was pretty. I carefully opened it, and pulled the orange and red scarf from the paper.

“Oh Halley, you saw me looking didn’t you?” I said as I wrapped it around my neck as well. Halley shrugged and stood on the butt of her cigarette.

Last came Luke; a boy I don’t expect much from. He’s Halley’s friend, not really mine and Judy’s; we don’t know him that well. Judy used to have a big crush on him. She drew hearts around pictures of him, cut out pictures of her, and pictures of him, and then glued them together – it was a bit scary, I had to talk her out of it.

I’ve never liked Luke like that; he’s not my type. And I hate saying that because I don’t ‘seem’ like the girl to have a type. But I do, and he isn’t the type I want; he has dark hair, which is neck length long, and when it gets annoying for him, he ties it back into a small pony tail at the nape of his neck. Why doesn’t he just get it cut? And his eyes are hazel, sometimes they look green, and his lips are too thick for my liking, and I could never imagine kissing them.

But alas, I turned to Luke, and I smiled at him. “Hi.” I said. This was our usual greeting on a school morning.

I’ve never received a birthday present from him before, but then he handed me a box and gave me sleepy smile.

“Are you serious?” I asked, smiling as I carefully held the medium sized box in my hands. The box itself was a soft pink, and a darker pink silk ribbon was tied around it; a neat bow was on top, and not for one second did I believe Luke had wrapped it himself. I smiled, pleased with my present and began to untie the ribbon.

“Why wouldn’t I give you a present?” He asked me, leaning against the tree and lighting his cigarette. By the way, his voice is too husky.

“Well, you’ve never given me a present before.” I pointed out.

“Open it up.” He urged me.

When I opened the innocent looking box, the last thing I expected to see inside was condoms. An assortment; loads of them! Red ones, pink ones, blue ones, green ones, yellow ones, purple ones, flavoured ones! I just stared at them; my mouth gaping open, I probably looked like my pet goldfish. By the way, he usually looked gormless.

“Um…Uh…” I stammered, closing the lid. “What am I supposed to do with these?”

I couldn’t have looked any more stupid.

Luke laughed. “Well, I figured seeing as you’re a virgin, and you’ve now reached the legal age of sexual activity, I might as well provide you with at least one of the things you must remember during sex.”

“Oh you’re sick.” I couldn’t help but laugh. I snatched the box away and shoved it in my bag. “I’m giving these out to underage sexually active teens.” I decided.

Luke shook his head.

“Now why waste them like that?” He said with another sleepy smile. Like usual, as we walked into the bustling corridor, his hand touched the bottom of my back, a habit he had all of a sudden when it came to crowds like these.

After school, Judy and I arrived at my house, soaked from the rain, our hair dripping wet. Judy had to borrow some of my clothes. We both dressed into a pair of my ratty sweats and fluffy jumpers and sat on my bedroom floor. The beanbags we sat on rustled every time we moved, often drowning out the heavy downpour outside.

“I cannot believe Luke.” Judy was saying as she examined a blueberry flavoured condom. I was also looking at them. I was too scared to open one. I remember watching Flo, our school nurse, fit one over an artificial blue, erect penis. She was all fumbly because of her arthritis and it pinged off, narrowly missing my face and instead landing on George’s head. Yuck.

“I’m not having sex until marriage anyway. I guess these will come in handy for then?” As I said that, Judy giggled, putting the packets back into the box and sighing.

“At least he’s looking out for your sexual well being.” Judy said thoughtfully.

“Which is sweet, in a weird way?” I wondered out loud, fiddling with my fluffy carpet.

“I suppose so.” Judy wrinkled her button nose and shrugged, sliding the lid of her phone up and reading a text message she had just received. “That’s mum, asking me where I am.” She then leaned forward and kissed my head. “Happy birthday chick,” she said warmly.

“Thanks Jude, I’ll see you tomorrow.” We hugged and then I retrieved her clothes from the dryer. When she changed, and left the house, I went back to my room and turned my laptop on to check my emails.

I had quite a lot; most of them were notifications from Facebook. I had an e-card from mum and dad; they told me how great the weather is in Barbados, and another e-card from Jeremy, my brother who was planning his wedding in Paris. And then a small box in the corner of my screen popped up, I clicked it.

Luke says: happy birthday

I didn’t even know he’s a contact on my MSN. I also didn’t really know what to reply with.

Amy says: oh thank you.

Luke says: no problem, i have some advice for you.

Amy says: go on then.

Luke says: …alright, cybersex is completely safe, no stds to worry about, accidental pregnancy and hey, you don’t waste condoms.

It’s like Luke is suddenly my Sex Guru.

Amy says: thank you so much, I’ll be sure to remember that. Anything else?

Luke says: nah, that’s it. :D

Amy says: bye luke x

Luke: ditto x
