Love, War And Dated Valentines
I was at an antique store today
And I stumble across a box of dated valentines
Lovely lace
Hearts of pinks and reds
A dove or an angel here or there
I rifted through them
And thought about how sad this was
A simple pink one said
To Susie my sweetheart all my love~Bobby
1945
Dear Mary, (said the one with angels and lace)
I love you baby. We’re in France now. I hope to see you soon.~John
1942
Hey, Hot Stuff
These English girls are nothing compared to you. Hope to see you soon.
Your Baby
(don’t call me that anymore the guys all tease me)
1943
(He must have been quite the Don Juan)
Those old valentines are just sitting there
Forgotten and forlorn
In that old dusty antique store
Each one tells the story of an old love affair
Of sweet summers
Long midnights under starry skies
And lovers tangled together
I wanted to do something with those valentines
Find out what had happened
To all the people
Did they go on and get married
Did they die
Why do the dusty cards just sit there?
Those valentines deserved better
So, here I quote
“so long lives this and this gives life to thee”
Now those sweethearts will live forever
In all this poem’s readers memories
