Introduction
The figure is invisible.
Well, technically, the figure is invisible only to mortal eyes. To any being that was of spiritual proportions, the figure was very much visible.
The figure is a young man who appears to be no older than sixteen. His entire torso is covered by a blindingly white garment that is secured at the waist by a gilded belt. Tightly in its sheath was a flashing sword, attached to the belt. Any exposed skin glowed bronze, and his eyes glimmered with a flame that looked as if it would never go out. His feet were covered with woven sandals, and at the nape of his neck was the mark of the Creator. Shimmering membranes that seemed to be nearly transparent were unfurled from his back and shoulders, glowing a soft light all on their own.
The boy looked young, but his aura was that of any other angelic warrior; pure, righteous, and strengthened by the prayers of peoples’ hearts.
His wings flapped lethargically, as if he did not really need them to fly. He slowly descended towards the ground, downward towards a large expanse of forest. Though he could simply disguise himself in broad daylight, humans would not react well to the idea of a boy simply materializing out of thin air. Or at least, that was what they would see, had he chosen to phase somewhere in public.
When he was close enough to the ground for his fancy—a good five stories from the forest floor, to put it in human terms—he let his wings dematerialize, and suddenly the boy was shooting down out of the sky, feet first in a quick plummet to the ground, like a falling star shooting towards the ground. At the last moment, his wings effortlessly sprang out again and caught the air underneath him, like a powerful parachute. The boy touched down on the forest floor without a sound.
He took a quick survey of his surroundings, making sure no one was nearby. No hiking trails were close by, so he felt even more at ease here in the peaceful forest. He briefly wished he could simply sit here, in the cool air of the forest, and take in the beauty of the creations around him.
But the Creator’s will must be done.
The young man closed his eyes, his arms relaxed at his sides. He took a deep breath through his nostrils, holding the crisp air inside his lungs as long as possible. He could feel the Spirit’s power swirl inside of him like wind. Then, when he could not hold his breath any longer, he let the air escape in a long, drawn out exhale.
The angel’s white garment was suddenly replaced with the ensemble of a normal Earth boy. Dark denim jeans covered his legs, and a black t-shirt coated his upper torso, its fabric printed with a design that sprouted from a cross. His woven sandals were replaced by socks and a pair of regular sneakers. His wings, the bronze glow to his skin, his flashing sword; all of them had seemingly disappeared.
The angel’s Earth name was Kin Stephens. His appearance was that of a sixteen year old boy’s, with dark brown eyes and dark hair that shone. His skin, no longer a bronze glow, looked tanned by the sun.
Kin opened his eyes and looked down at his hands, which were outstretched slightly with palms facing upwards. He clenched and unclenched his fingers, as if to get used to his human skin.
“This shall do.” He said, and without a sound he turned and walked through the forest back towards town.
There was work to be done.
“For the love of all that’s holy,” Sandy exhaled under her breath in astonishment, caught between bites of her ham sandwich. She glanced towards Hannah, and then back at what—rather, who—had caused her astonishment. “Hannah, I think that guy’s staring at you. Like, really, really staring at you.”
“You say this like it’s impossible.” Hannah grunted, eyeing her friend carefully, a slight smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth. “Thanks a bunch. Real confidence booster, Sandy.”
“Oh, come on Hannah, you know what I meant!” Sandy didn’t always take well to Hannah’s thick sarcasm. “I mean, he looks really interested, if you catch my drift.”
Hannah took a quick glance towards whomever Sandy was making such a fuss about, blowing a strand of red hair out of her face. When she looked at the table diagonally across from them, she saw him. Yeah, sure, he was eyeing her alright. But he was clearly eyeing her like a boy would to a bag of candy, not actually interested in her.
“Sandy, you’re about as dense as a pound of pure lead, sometimes.” Hannah shook her head slightly, as if in disappointment.
“What? I’m not dense, Hannah!” Sandy was clearly pouting again. Hannah could tell, just from the sound of her voice. She felt Lori, her best friend, shift beside her. It was obvious that Lori was trying not to laugh at Sandy and Hannah’s little banter.
“Well, Sandy, I’ve been known to be dense, too,” Hannah admitted, and then came back with a full-fledged smirk. “But even I can plainly see that that guy is not staring at me. He’s practically drooling.” The word drooling came out sounding funny, as Hannah took a bite out of her hamburger, chewing a bit while speaking the last word.
“Like a dog.” Lori added quickly, and Hannah swallowed her food before letting out a little chuckle. Lori was usually more on the quiet side, but occasionally she chimed in, and whenever she did it was always worth it.
The truth was, Hannah really wanted someone to ask her to the school dance. She wanted someone who was genuinely nice and caring to ask her. She was a lot more sentimental than she let on to her friends, and she was afraid that that sentimentality was giving her unrealistic expectations of men. But, seeing as how it was already Friday at lunchtime, and the dance was that evening, there probably wasn’t much of a chance of that happening, anyways. Looks like Hannah was going as a single, along with her best friends Lori and Sandy. Well, scratch that, Sandy had a boyfriend. So that at least left Lori.
After more lunchtime small-talk that no one would remember the next day, Hannah stood up to go throw away her garbage in the trash can. The trash cans were conveniently placed in the center of the cafeteria and also near the doors. She went to dispose of her garbage at one of the center cans.
When Hannah turned back towards her table to head back to talk with her friends, a strong hand reached out and caught her by the arm, stopping her in her tracks. Surprised, she whirled around to face one of her classmates.
“Hey.”
It was Eric, one of her classmates in biology. He was about half a head taller than her with wavy blonde hair. He was the type that liked to swim, and he had broad shoulders to prove it. Hannah immediately felt her face flush slightly.
“Hey, Eric.” Hannah was stunned at the fact that she wasn’t stuttering by now. “W-what’s up?” There, much more like it.
“There’s a dance tonight.” He said this like a fact, which it was.
“Yep, that there is.”
That there is? Come on, seriously, Hannah?
He chuckled lightly at her choice of words. She let out a relieved sigh. Something was making her extremely unnerved around this guy, but then maybe it was just the aftereffect of having that other guy stare at her like a piece of meat. Yeah, that was it.
“Well, Miss Red, could I have the honor of going with you to said dance?” He eyed her questioningly. He and a few others had nicknamed her Miss Red, due to her fiery orange hair.
Hannah felt her face flush again. Forget that other guy. This was a perfectly nice guy, asking her to the dance? She must be dreaming.
Hannah pinched herself in the arm inconspicuously. When the slight sting didn’t make her wake up, she decided she would just accept it as reality.
This was reality.
“Of course.” She breathed.
A/N: This is another story idea that popped into my head and I just felt the urge to write it. I was actually planning on writing chapter sixteen of Flight, but I ended up accidentally leaving my notebook at school. Said notebook contained a few crucial pages of the chapter that I can’t seem to remember! So I’m really frustrated.
Anyways, I wanted to be productive over this weekend, and this is the product. It will be a full story, like Flight, and I will update both as much as possible.
So, what do you guys think of the introduction? I realize that Hannah’s part is sort of rushed, but at this point I don’t care. I just wanted to set the stage for the actual story as quickly as possible, so yeah…I’m relatively pleased with the way this turned out, though.
Review, please :D It would make me a happy person.
I really like Kin. He’s going to be a fun character to write as.
Oh, and yes, there are Christian views in this story. Obviously, since Kin is an angel and he refers to the Creator, it will have a somewhat significant involvement with the spiritual realm. So, if you are strongly opposed to the thoughts of angels and demons, etc, then you do not have to read this story. But whatever. Do what you wish. Just don’t leave any flaming messages for me to report. :D
Much love to you all,
