Chapter One

Halloween passed by fast that year for Sam. Ever since her older sister, Lucy, had decided that Trick-or-Treating was dorky, nerdy, geeky, and, most of all, dweeby, a few years back, Sam stopped as well. Without Lucy by her side, Trick-or-Treating just made her feel lonely. She was fourteen now, and she hadn’t gone demanding candy from strangers in three years, and probably never would again. This year, with Lucy gone at some Halloween party, and her parent’s out at some restaurant, Sam had offered to stay home, and pass out candy to any little kids that might venture to the top of the hill where Sam’s family lived. But Sam knew that no one would come; she only stayed home to she could finally have the TV to herself.

Finally, at 11:00, she decided to put the candy dish away, and headed to bed. But just as she took off the blue wig she had been wearing, the doorbell rang. Sam knew no one from her family would be home yet, and definitely wouldn’t ring the doorbell.

What kind of kid is still fishing for candy this late? She asked herself. Sam peered through the peephole of the front door, but all she saw was a cheap, glow-in-the-dark skeleton mask. Deciding it was worth a try, Sam slowly opened the door, to reveal someone that was way too tall to be a kid.

“Um, do you want some candy?” she asked anyway.

“No.” replied a voice, definitely female.

“Well, then, how can I help you?” Sam asked, still trying to be polite, even though the stranger wasn’t.

“Stop talking.” The voice said rudely.

Excuse me?” Sam said incredulously.

“If you utter one more word, I will be forced to hurt you,” the woman said, taking off her mask to reveal waist-length blonde hair, “or at least try to hurt you. I doubt I could hurt you.”

Sam just stood there, too shocked to make a sound. She noticed that this woman was strangely beautiful.

“Good, you are going to be corporative this time” the beautiful woman said. “Now, sit down right there on the floor, and put you hands where I can see them, vampire.”

What?!” Sam couldn’t help but crying. She definitely escaped from some asylum, Sam thought.

“What did I say about talking?” the woman shouted.

“Sorry”

“Shut up, vampire.” She added the last word again…

“Why do you keep calling me vampire?” Sam slipped out.

“I will ask the questions, Lucy.” The strange creature said.

“Wait, wait, wait – L-Lucy? Why’d you call me Lucy? I’m Sam, Lucy’s sister.” Sam whimpered.

The woman turned pale as snow. “You are not Lucy Morrow?”

“No, I’m Sam Morrow, Lucy’s younger sister. But wait, even if I was Lucy, why would you call me ‘vampire’?” Sam asked.

“I cannot answer that.” The woman said simply, still quite pale.

“Look, you barge into my house, and accuse me being something that doesn’t even exist!” Sam cried. “You owe me an explanation!”

“Vampires exist.” The woman said, annoying now.

“That’s not my point. Who are you? You can start by telling me your name.” Sam said, sounding much more confident then she felt.

“I’m Julie.”

For some reason, Sam was surprised to hear such a simple name. She had expected some foreign or exotic name, not Julie.

“Okay, Julie, why did you call me ‘vampire’?”

“Because I thought you were Lucy.” Julie said, as if talking about the weather.

“Even if I were Lucy, why would you call me that?” Sam asked, really frustrated now.

“Because Lucy Morrow is a vampire, and needs eliminated.” Julie said.
