Remembrance Day

What are we remembering?

The soldiers,

The war,

The death.

But what do the soldiers remember?

Their fallen comrades,

Killing to survive another day,

Living in the trenches,

Or maybe how thankful they are to be home and alive.

Do we, the ones who did not have to go, truly understand?

How can we?

Our words are only an excuse.

Can we do more than remember one day a year?

Can we push to end the current war?

Or as I have learned,

Offer and an ear

Do not make them remember alone.

Do not let them relive the pain

But bend an ear

And share the yoke.

For the pain they bear is the price of our freedom,

And that they share.
