(My first zombie story, so hope it’s alright…)
-----------------------------------
Swine flu. When it began people freaked out. Trying to get shots to prevent it, not wanting to get killed by it, or to even be in the risk of getting it. But soon, the panic dissolved and people stopped caring about swine flu. That was a mistake.
Soon, those who had died because of it, came to life and those who had it soon joined them, and people soon found out that no vaccine would save them from swine flu, which was now known as ‘zombie flu’. It had begun. The end of the world…
My name is May Harrison. I’m an average size for a girl my age, which is 16 years old, may I add. And, currently I’m wearing jeans, a black ’Zombieland’ shirt, a black jacket and worn out flip-flops; I also have long brown hair that goes down to my waist, as well as brown eyes, and, if I may say so myself, am quite awesome as well as adorable. My likes? I always loved zombies, saw every zombie movie ever worth seeing, read every zombie book worth reading, really was interested in anything that involved zombies at all. Now, I wished they never existed. Not in movies. Not in books. Not in real-life. Why? Because now that they exist, my life is a living hell.
I guess I should start my story now, huh? I might not finish it though, I can’t assure you, whoever is reading this, that I survived, or that you will survive if the zombies are still out there, but it may give you comfort in reading this. Or not.
-----------------------------------
I had fled from home, as my whole family had been affected by the disease, either that or bitten, I wasn’t sure. I didn’t have the heart to kill them, so I ran. I ran with nothing but a car, a shovel, and a few snacks. But when that car died, I was left to walk on the road hoping someone would help me.
And someone did.
I walked along the road, shovel at hand, no food though, as I had eaten it all. Old cars scattered around the road, people had tried to flee but had been obviously unsuccessful since dead bodies were scattered everywhere. Yet, no zombies in sight.
I had been fortunate enough to only have run into a few zombies, not getting harmed when I had confronted them. But, even without the hassle of fighting off the undead, I was getting tired, hungry, thirsty, and bored. I almost wished for zombies at times like this, when I had nothing to do but walk.
Then I saw it. A beat-up black truck driving my way, And thank god for this, as a few zombies had appeared. From where, I could only wonder.
“Crap.” I muttered, bashing a zombie in the head as it lunged at me. “Hey! Help!”
The black truck began to slow down as it neared me and I heard a boy’s voice call out, “Hop on the back, if you can. If not, you deserve to get killed, right?”
I held back a yell of, “Jerk!” As I didn’t want him to drive away. So I began to run after the truck as it drove, bashing my shovel into zombies if they tried to attack me, and, finally, I grabbed the back of the truck and hopped on. Once the boy noticed I had done so, he sped up, running over any zombies in his path.
“Get in!” His voice called, then I sighed, and carefully climbed over by the passenger door, double-checking to make sure no zombies would be able to get me, and swung it open, jumping inside and slamming the door.
“Woo! Fun, huh? You okay? You didn’t get bitten, did you? I don’t wanna have to kill a girl, but you gotta do what you gotta do…” The boy said as I got in the passenger seat, buckling the seat belt.
“Well gee, thanks for your concern. I’m fine, no bites, not a scratch.” I assured him, then looked over at my ‘savior’.
He had short, but bushy, brown hair, and blue eyes, his skin was pale, well, from what I could see through the dirt that covered it; he wore a simple attire of jeans, a dirty old white t-shirt and white sneakers. My first thought of him: weird.
“So, where ya heading?” He asked, glancing over at me.
“Anywhere… Shouldn’t we introduce ourselves first? My name is May. May Harrison.” I said and he laughed for some reason.
“Alright May, whatever. Guess it’s nice to have acquaintances now and again, better than going insane during the apocalypse. Name’s Gabriel Demitrin.” Gabriel said, and I shook my head.
“This isn’t the apocalypse. It’ll go away soon! Zombies can be easily killed, Gabriel! The military will probably kill ‘em all off…” I said, though I didn’t truly believe this. This was just a lie. A lie to make me feel better.
“Yeah, sure. Whatever you wanna think, but truth is, this is the end of the world, miss. And we won’t last long, unless we accept that. So stop living in your fantasies and deal with the endless nightmare that this world now is, ‘cause this is the last state of the world. Once we humans die off, it’ll only be a wasteland of zombies.” He muttered, what a depressing way to put it…
-----------------------------------
We drove on in silence. Then, my stomach growled. “Heh, sorry. Haven’t eaten in a day or so…”
He looked over at me and sighed. Then threw me a small bag of chips. “Thanks.” I muttered, then began to stuff my face.
“We’re heading to Wal-Mart. So we can stock up. I don’t know, or care, how long you’ll be traveling with me, but if you aren’t able to defend yourself I’ll throw you to the zombies as a sacrifice, ‘kay?” He told me, and I frowned. What a nice guy.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m not gonna have to worry about that as I can defend myself. I’m not some helpless girl, okay? So you won’t have to worry about defending me, but thanks for offering, you’re such a gentleman.” I said, sarcasm dripping off my tongue as the last sentence spilled from my mouth.
“No problem, I live to help the ladies.” He replied, and this just pissed me off. Why? Because he sounded serious.
“Whatever.” I muttered, then returned to eating.
-----------------------------------
“Here we are…” We pulled into the Wal-Mart parking lot. It was deserted, you know, other than a few zombies lurking about.
“Alright, not sure if you noticed, but I had some weapons in the back, mostly gardening tools, but here’s what we’ll do. Get out, go to the back of the truck and get some weapons. If any zombies come near you, bash them in the head with that shovel of yours, think you can handle that?” Gabriel asked and I sighed. “Yeah, yeah. Let’s go.”
And with that, I opened the door, grabbed my shovel and we both set off to get supplies, and to kill any zombies in our way.
