If Gods Were Come

If men were gone

And gods were come,

What games be played;

What songs be sung?

Would they need

The foods we had?

Or would those fade,

And turn to sand?

Would our cultures

Stay on Earth

So gods could pick

The ones of worth?

Would they use

The things they made,

Or look, then turn

Their heads in shame?

Would the world

Have gone to waste

If gods were come

To take our place?

And when at last

The gods were done--

What then, what then--

If gods were come?
