Trick or Treat

The night was dark and dreary

While I felt cold and weary.

But I kept my promise…

To take my little cousin and her friend

Trick or treating.

In the beginning it was cute,

They were both dressed as babies

All bundled up

in their little pajammies.

But after three hours…

I have to admit

Walking with two eight year olds

Was a trip.

After this house,

I was done.

This was it.

We had hit the jackpot

as far as trick or treating goes that is.

We’d been at it for three and a half hours,

And I couldn’t wait to go home.

I used this as my motivation

As we reached the last home.

We took one step, two steps…

Three steps, four…

Five steps, six steps…

Oh My Gosh, we had seven more steps to go!

When we finally arrived

I thought I would cry.

Thank heavens we made it!

Any longer and I might have died.

I knocked on the door

And patiently waited…

Please don’t tell me

This time was wasted!

We waited and waited-

And waited some more…

I knocked again,

Praying someone would answer the door.

I didn’t care how long

We would stand there waiting.

We were going to stay here

Until we received that candy!

We stood there like soldiers.

And I had to admit

I was pretty dang proud of these kids.

My Gosh they were fit!

Then again, who was I kidding?

It was probably the candy.

They only stuffed their faces

And now were stocked up on candy.

I sighed as I felt

The winds suddenly pick up speed,

The outside now,

Was getting colder unfortunately.

Reluctantly I looked

At the time which read

A quarter past nine.

“Oh great,” I said.

We could wait a few more minutes,

But then we’d have to leave.

After all, I promised my aunt and uncle

We’d be home at 9:43.

So I looked at the kids,

As I unwillingly said

“Whelp, this is it,

No more candy my friends.”

And those ungrateful kids

Glared at me with evil eyes

As if I had deprived them

Of candy the whole night!

I ignored their whining.

I ignored their pleas.

I ignored their complaining

Of receiving no more candy.

But as we reached the bottom of the stairs

It was suddenly quiet.

And I was about to thank the Lord

For whatever made them quiet.

Until I realized

What had made the terrible noise stop.

It was a tall, dark figure standing

Right in front of us.

We could have ran.

We could have screamed.

But no, we stood there.

Stupid as can be.

The only thing I heard was

“Trick or treat?”

But that was enough to send me

Running all the way down the street.

When I reached a safe distance

I stopped to finally breathe

Only to realize

The girls were not behind me.

I was about to head back.

When I felt a sudden tap-

Tap, tap, tap

Right on my back.

I turned around

And my body turned to stone.

It was that same dark figure!

It followed me halfway home.

I screamed

And was about to bolt,

But it was too late,

It had already grabbed hold of my coat.

And before I knew it

It was laughing at me.

But it wasn’t a laugh

Unfamiliar to me.

The dark figure let go of me

And took off its cloak.

In front of me stood my uncle?

Was this some kind of joke?

Apparently he had seen us

Walking through the streets

Figured we could use a lift

But not until he had his fun with us three.

Relief flooded over me

As this processed through my head.

Thank God I thought!

It wasn’t my time yet.

But before my mind

Could be completely at ease,

I asked my uncle

Where the girls would be.

He laughed and pointed

To his car down the road

Where I saw two little girls

Hanging out by the car door.

And of course,

There they were.

My cousin and her friend,

doing what they do best,

Stuffing their faces and laughing at my expense.
