I'm usually a sunshine-and-daisies sort of person, but the electricity was gone, and my boyfriend wasn't picking up his phone so I wrote this on a piece of newspaper that was lying around. And then I rewrote it and left it lying around. And I found it a few days ago so I decided to post it. 

ALONE

And the lights were spilling liquid gold,

And her eyes were bright with tears;

And her lips murmured soundlessly

The songs playing in her ears.

And her nails flashed bright colours,

And she was dressed to kill,

But behind the smudged black eye-makeup,

Her eyes were innocent still.

And she watched the shadows

Play on the walls,

And she dreaded the light of dawn.

For it was so much harder

To lie to herself

When the cover of darkness was gone.

And she had never known a promise

That wasn't just empty words.

And she had never known a desire

That wasn't just wishes unheard.

And her nails were digging into her palms,

And the tip of her nose was cold

And she clutched at herself, tighter than ever

For there was no one else to hold.

And she closed her eyes and wished,

Again and again and again

But her life held no glass slippers,

And her story no happy end.

And every breath was ragged,

And she felt chilled to the bone,

And the silence seemed to be whispering

That she was so alone.

And the lights were spilling liquid gold,

And her eyes were bright with tears;

And if she could have screamed her sorrows out,

No one would've been there to hear.
