“There are those who are exist, and there are those who do not. What if there are some who are one in the same?”
How can this be possible? Anything is possible. When people start being spared from certain death on a regular basis, you know that something is up.
“It must be God! He knows that the year 20XX is approaching, and wants to spare us in an act of providence!”
”It must be a vigilante striking back against the wrongs of society, and the world as a whole!”
That’s what they say about me. That’s what they’ve always said about me and the previous people to take up the mantle of what you normal people refer to as the “Myth.”
My trail of fire began a long time ago. Before the trees started burning around me, and the before the grand forest of my life dematerialized into slivers of rough ash. This spark is still going and live, however; I’m still here. I’m still fighting. But maybe you should know why. That would help clear things up, and it would help to clear my mind. It would give me a sort of relief, knowing that I’m not the only one who has to share these vibrant memories. Yes, what a good idea.
My name is Thurston. It’s not my real name, but it’s what I go by. I’m seventeen years old. I was born on a small island, Daydream Island, far off of the coast of the Japan. Obviously, it’s not a Japanese island. Don’t recall ‘daydream’ being a Japanese term, anyways. It’s under British control.
Now about me… Well… I’m not what you would call “normal.”
I’m what’s known as the Savior of the Unseen. Otherwise referred to as the, “Myth.”
In the world, there are always good and bad events occurring. Good people die for no reason; bad people live to tell the tale. Bad people bite the dust; good people have a nice story to tell at their job over a hot cup of coffee. But what happens when there isn’t a balance, and when people are dying left and right? That’s where I come in. I’m supposed to keep that balance.
I suppose you’re wondering who decides what I should do and who I should save. That’s up to my superiors in the secret society I’m apart of; The Midnight Society. We all have the ability of invisibility, which is how mankind doesn’t know about us. I was taught this ability in preparation for the day that I was released from the society to sent the world into balance again.
I’ll never know why they chose me to be the Savior. I’ve never been anyone special. I grew up on my tiny island, isolated from our giant, commerce hub and sister island, the Japanese island of Chikara. I had a normal childhood; I was just an average, fatherless, spunky kid who was a complete momma’s boy. There was nothing special about me; other than the “invisibility gene” and such. I’m beginning to wonder if that’s a load of horse manure or not, as I practically learned my superhuman abilities through instruction.
Those “blessed” with the so called “invisibility gene” were taken in by the Midnight Society to join them in our humble, unseen town in the middle of nowhere in America. We all had the ability to turn invisible, take more damage than most people, and to lift things much heavier than ourselves. It was all so unreal. One day, you would vanish from sight for a couple of seconds, or survive a car crash, and then strange men would come to take you away to their “utopia.”
We in the Midnight Society had to watch as the “normal people” drove themselves closer to ruin. Everything made so much sense to me, then. The world was approaching the eve of its own apocalypse, and something had to be done. It was up to me to set these people straight. I had been training for ten years for it, from year 2020 to 2030.
But what if the end of humanity wasn’t what it seemed to be? Who is to say what is good or bad? Why should those lucky enough to be granted with more than others be left to decide who is worthy of life or death?
Those thoughts never crossed my mind as I stepped up to the Midnight Society’s high council in charge of my deployment to the normal world…
Chapter 1: Savior of the Unseen
“Hey, Thurston!”
A familiar, friendly voice overtook my ears. I still don’t know why this is the first thing I remember when it comes to my recent memories. I still recall what the society looked like. A dreamlike white light shone over almost everything in our hidden town. The space outside the council building was empty and usually devoid of people, making it a good spot for me and my friends to hang out and do what normal teenage males do; absolutely nothing that requires thought. The grass was thick and lush; the state of the environment was important to most in the Midnight Society. The sun was shining overhead, but it wasn’t too bright. I was just about to enter the enormous, gray tower of the Midnight Society high council.
I peered down at my thin silver staff in my hands. A devious smile formed upon my mouth. I lifted up the light weapon and spun around on my feet. I thrust the staff up the neck of the person behind me who called me. He raised his hands in the air defensively. I snickered, triumphant in my ability to accurately defend against an unseen target.
“Hey, Donovan.” I continued laughing at the tall, lanky kid before me. He had light brown hair and bluish colored eyes. He wore his familiar plain clothes; your standard t-shirt, jeans and tennis shoes combination. The works. He pushed up his square glasses into place with a goofy smile.
”You’ve gotten a ton better, man.” Donovan complimented with a smirk. “Is that what you’ve been up to during training?”
”Yeah, it’s been torture.” I whined with both humor and false sadness. “My training has been only fight training with my staff. I’ve been putting the finishing touches on everything.”
“Sounds like fun.” Donovan laughed a little sarcastically. “When are you leaving, by the way?”
I paused remorsefully. I hadn’t had the heart to tell him that I was going away forever in less than a day. But I knew this was coming eventually, so I decided to come out with it.
“Tomorrow.”
He was silent as well, the cheery atmosphere long buried beneath silent sorrow.
“Why didn’t you tell me…?” He was getting a little angry and balled his fists. It was understandable, really. He was the first friend I made when I came to the Midnight Society at age seven.
“I didn’t know how to tell you that I was leaving so soon…” My voice got quieter.
“I don’t even know what to say.” His anger was replaced with profound sadness. “What am I gonna tell Evangeline?”
He trailed off again, eyed the high council building, and then focused back on me. “You were about to go in there, weren’t you?”
I said nothing, which seemed to make him even more upset.
“You were gonna leave without saying goodbye!”
I could feel warm tears starting to well up in my eyes.
“Dammit, he found me out.” I thought.
“Why, Thurston?!” He grabbed me by the shoulders. I fixed my gaze on the ground aimlessly as he shook me.
“It was just… Too hard to say goodbye to my friends…” I finally admitted. Donovan’s eyes widened and he let go of me. For awhile, the two of us said nothing and the sound of the wind blowing was the only thing audible.
“…You need to go see Evangeline before you go.” He finally started again. “She’s been crying a lot lately.”
I groaned. I hated it when girls cried, especially for someone as unworthy as me. My being raised by a single mother gave me a quite a profound view on the fairer sex.
“Can we both go together? She won’t cry if you’re there.” I sounded a little hoarse by this point.
He put a hand on my shoulder and gave me a sad smile. “Of course, man.”
We walked all the way back to his place, through the forest. I always loved long walks and nature in general. The forest was always the place where I went when I wanted to feel calm and serene. But nothing could calm me down now. I still hung my head and dragged my feet in sadness as we trekked over to Donovan’s house.
His house was pretty small and standard. He had a nice yard, though, like everyone else in the Midnight Society. But his was even nicer, with a big garden in front. The flowers grew to an enormous size and were every color you could think of. Being a nature freak, this always intrigued me. To this day, I still don’t know what kinds of flower’s Don’s mother planted out there.
He didn’t ring the bell, which struck me as odd for a moment, before I felt like an idiot, realizing that it was his house. We strode in slowly as if something would pop out at us. Knowing Evangeline, it wasn’t that strange, really, though. We passed by the living room where both of Donovan’s parents were sitting. They were watching some sitcom on the small TV at the end of the room. Their faces lit up at the sight of the two of us casually walking in. I put away my staff; it was retractable.
“Thurston, Don!” Donovan’s father exclaimed happily as he looked over at Don’s mother. “It’s our two sons, honey.”
She laughed. “Indeed, Ray. What brings you here, Thurston?”
”No reason, Mrs. Ericsson. We were just looking for Evangeline.” I responded with a surprisingly real smile. Not the fake kind that I use when I’m actually upset on the inside. I guess I was just happy to see familiar people one more time before going away.
“She’s up in her room.” Mrs. Ericsson smiled back. Their last name always killed me. There was a running joke between us that they were actually a Norse family, and that they were related to Leif Ericson. She could produce quite a convincing Scandinavian accent.
“Thanks, we’ll be up there for a bit.” Don gave them a little wave and we headed up the stairs. She must have heard our voices, as she was at the top of the stairs. Her long, black hair hung down to her elbows and brushed across them. She was dressed in long pants and a tight, v-neck t-shirt with a pretty interesting white design on the chest. Her deep, almost enchanting, blue eyes were locked right on to me. I knew that look; she was going to chew me out for something. Don and I weren’t even up the stairs when she started yelling in her pretty, yet harsh voice.
“Thurston, where have you been?! Don and I were looking all over for you!”
”I’m sorry.” I put my hands up defensively. I eyed Don for a second to come up with a lie, but a convincing story escaped me. I gulped fearfully before finally caving in.
“I was going to leave for my assignment early…”
Her eyes became saucers and she fell silent.
“I don’t leave until tomorrow, but I didn’t want to have to say goodbye…”
All three of us were dead quiet. The laughter from Don and Evangeline’s parents suddenly died down; they must have heard me as well.
Don finally decided to break the silence. “Let’s all… Go into your room, sis, to talk.”
He led the way to Evangeline’s room. I hadn’t really been in her room much before. It was a lot smaller than I remember; probably because I was smaller the last time I was in her room. She had a vast collection of colorful, collectible merchandise on shelves on her walls. She was a gaming freak; she had every video game system known to man. Her collection stretched from Atari to Japanese exclusives that haven’t even been released elsewhere. Evangeline loved Japanese culture; she always took pride in the fact that her best friend, me, was Japanese. She had figurines of Pac-Man and Kratos, Sonic the Hedgehog and Master Chief, right next to each other. She sat on her bed with that same hurt expression as Don and I leaned against a nearby wall, shutting the door behind us. I felt guilt building in my heavy heart at seeing her face.
“I don’t understand, Thurston… Why would you want to leave us?” She asked remorsefully. I had known Evangeline just as long as I had known Don. Since she was a bit younger, she’s two years younger than Don and I, who are the same age, I’ve always thought of her as my little sister of sorts.
”It was just too painful to say goodbye…” I managed to hang my head even lower as Don eyed me pitifully. She started to cry; softly at first, before the tears fell like rain and dampened her jeans.
“Damn you!” She got up and began beating on my chest as crystal drops descended from her eyes.
“Evangeline! Calm down!” Don pushed himself off of the wall and wrapped his arms around his sister from behind in an attempt to get her off of me, but she was stuck to me like glue. By this point, I was crying too, and at seeing me crying, Don started to cry as well. All three of us held each other tightly, crying our eyes out.
“Why do you have to go away, Thurston?!” Evangeline shouted through her tears as she pressed against me firmly. I could feel my shirt getting damp from both her tears and mine.
“I’m so sorry… I’m sorry…” I couldn’t think of anything else to say. The two of us stayed in that position for awhile, until I finally thought of something, eyeing Evangeline’s memorabilia on her walls with my watery and cloudy vision.
“Hey…” I began in a rough voice from all of the blubbering. “I think my assignment takes place in somewhere in Asia. If it’s Japan, I’ll be sure to bring you back souvenirs, Eva.”
She giggled a little through her sobbing. Don laughed a little bit too. “Thanks, Thurston.” She smiled up at me with wet cheeks and hugged both me and Don tightly. It felt so good, so warm. I thought that those moments would be the last that I would ever spend with them, my best friends that I had ever known.
“No matter what happens, we’re still inseparable.” Evangeline whispered to both me and Don. We nodded firmly with crying smiles and spent the rest of the day with each other.
It was about midnight when I finally headed back to where I slept. I would have stayed with Eva and Don all night, but they insisted that I would need a full night’s rest before my big day. My mother wasn’t admitted into the society, as she didn’t have the invisibility gene. I guess that means that I got it from my father, to be honest. Since my mother wasn’t there, I had no place to stay other than the high council tower. They gave me my own room and everything; free food, bath, and a place to sleep, so I couldn’t complain. I slowly slipped through the revolving doors to the tower and was greeted by the familiar sight of the base floor. No one was there; everyone must have gone home or to bed by then. I shuffled my feet on the carpet so that I wouldn’t get the floor dirty and proceeded towards the stairwell. However, my walk was suddenly disrupted by light footsteps across the wooden floor. My sharpened senses told me that there was someone coming from behind, and that they were waiting for me to enter the building. I whipped out my retractable staff, extended it, and held it up defensively as I spun around on my heel to face the threat. My eyes opened up as the person in question brought an identical staff horizontally against mine. Our staffs quivered against each other due to our arms shaking as we defended against each other.
“Master?! What are you doing?!” I cried desperately as I looked up at the six foot four younger man before me. He wore his usual plain clothes and had long, brown hair that was poorly kept and almost hung over his equally brown eyes.
“I’m seeing if you’re ready, Thurston!” His voice was completely serious.
He came at me ferociously, swinging his staff wildly at me. My reaction time and speed had increased wondrously, so I was able to keep up with him and parry his blows away. Master Shields was always like this; he would get serious out of nowhere and thrust some sort of challenge upon you.
Master Shields continued coming at me and gained ground on me. Damn. I kept trying to strike back, but I couldn’t find any open spots. He harshly sweep kicked my ankles, but I managed to use my staff to keep me from falling to the ground.
“Stand and fight, Thurston!”
Growling a little, I waited for an opening and clutched my light staff tighter in my hands. I saw a window of opportunity to successfully go on the offensive after deflecting a rapid blow and drew my staff upwards towards Master Shields’s neck. He paused, peering down at the cold metal against his neck, and smirked proudly at me.
“You’ve gotten so much better, Thurston. You’re going to make me proud.”
I couldn’t smile back, as he had brought up what I was trying to take my mind off of. He noticed my discomfort and gently placed a large, rough hand on my shoulder.
“Don’t be so glum, Thurston.” He shook me a little bit.
“It’s the highest honor in the society to be chosen as the Savior, you know.” He added.
”I know, Master, I know.” I bit my lip a little bit out of habit. “I’m just not looking forward to leaving my life behind.”
He was silent and continued to manhandle me a little. I gloomily looked back at him, and then back down at the floor. I could see from the corner of my eye that he wanted to say something, but he was interrupted by another voice.
“Kazuki! Marcus!” The snarling, pig-like voice I knew all to well boomed through the hall on the ground floor of the tower. I groaned a little to myself and turned around to see the head of the high council approaching me; Adam Rondall. He was a bit on the older side, probably nearing his sixties, and always wore a tight, white suit. Every single day. He was rather vertically challenged and always managed to look like a dwarf next to the enormously tall Master Shields. If he was vertically challenged, then he was most certainly not horizontally challenged. He waddled over to us, red in the face and glaring Master Shields and I down.
“What are you two still doing up?!” He demanded. “You two are getting up at daybreak, you know.”
Master Shields respectfully bowed. “I’m sorry, Honorable Chairman.”
Rondall smirked down at my master, probably happy that someone was actually giving him the respect he believed he deserved. Complete BS.
He turned towards me once again. “Kazuki, tomorrow is a big day. Get your ass in bed, now!”
I twitched as he mispronounced my name. Not only did he use my real Japanese name, which I almost never went by, but he completely butchered it. I wasn’t quite aware of who this “Kah-zuh-kee” person was that he spoke of.
“Yes sir…” I grumbled quietly. I didn’t bother to look back at him, as I knew he was still wearing that grimace. As I headed for the stairwell, Master Shields grabbed my arm to stop me. He leaned in close and his features got clearer from my peripheral vision. My brown haired superior rested his hand on my shoulder and smiled proudly once again.
“I have faith in you, Thurston.” He finally stated. I couldn’t help but smile back. Everyone had been so busy being upset that I was going that no one had really reassured me that I would actually, well, do a successful job of preventing the end of humanity. Because of this, his words meant more to me than they would have normally. He let go of his firm grip on my shoulder and let me head up the stairs. I wasn’t sure if I was crying or not, but if not, I was close to it.
“This is my last night here… My last night in the Midnight Society, in the high council tower…” I thought to myself emotionally. I grasped the railing of the stairwell tighter as I continued up to my room. I arrived to my humble living quarters and flipped up the light switch. The bright lights revealed my plain and tidy space. Normally, it looked like a tornado had just gone through my room, but since I was leaving, it was perfectly clean, with everything in its right place. My old, cracked staffs were resting in the corner of my room, just in front of my well-made bed. I plopped down on it and let myself sink into the soft comforter. My eyes fell upon the cracking staffs in front of me. A smile formed upon my lips as I recalled how they had been broken; either from training with Master Shields or roughhousing with Don when I was younger. I let my head slump down on my pillow, still smiling. It was the calm before the storm, essentially. Before long, I felt myself drift off into deep slumber.
I dreamt of my mother. She was tearfully seeing me off before I left. However, my dreams were short lived.
“Thurston! Thurston!” A voice called for me as I was half asleep.
I murmured a little bit, but didn’t wake up fully.
“Ugh. He could sleep through a stampede of elephants. Allow me…” This voice was a female’s. I was wide awake by this point, as I knew it was Evangeline. My eyes flew open wide and I shot up, a little scared of what she was going to do.
”I’m awake, Eva!” I shouted. But it was far too late. She leapt onto my chest and pressed the full weight of her knees on to my chest. She leaned in and shouted at the top of her lungs.
“THUUURSTOOOOOOOOON!!!!”
I’m not quite sure how I still have hearing after that moment. She grinned down at my astonished face with her pale face and bright blue eyes.
“Good morning to you too…” I groaned.
She giggled a little and got off of me so that I could actually take in a breath. I gradually sat up and realized that both Master Shields and Don were in my room as well.
“Sorry about that, Thurston.” Don laughed and scratched the back of his head. “I just can’t control this little sister of mine.”
”You’ve never been able to.” I remarked, laughing heartily.
“And he’ll never be able to.” Evangeline added, crossing her arms with a smirk.
“That’s alright, though.” I smiled at her warmly. “I wouldn’t want you to be under control if it meant you being any different.”
She gasped a little and smiled back just as warmly. She seemed to be a little abashed as a little bit of pink rose to her cheeks.
“Ahem…” Master Shields finally stepped forwards and interrupted us. “If I may interject, you three… Thurston is late for his send off.”
”What?!” I cried, glancing on the digital clock on my desk. It was always about an hour slow, and I had never gotten around to fixing that. I added an hour to the time displayed, and deflated, realizing that I was horribly late.
“Crap!” I shouted, bolting off of my bed. I grabbed my bag full of my materials, slung it over my shoulder, and let my legs carry me out the door. I could hear the footsteps of the others following close behind. I flew down the stairwell and down the hall of the ground floor towards the gathering room. I could hear a dull murmur that sounded like a thousand voices whispering to each other at once. The murmur got increasingly more audible as I got closer to the large room.
Once I arrived at the room in question, I stepped into the doorway and felt eyes on me like lasers. The dull roar was suddenly dead as me and the others strode into the gathering room. I surveyed my surroundings carefully; most of the townspeople were here, filling the many stands. There was a long table at the end of the room, most likely where Rondall and the other higher ups were sitting. I figured that was where I needed to be, so I continued towards the high council members. I could make out Rondall’s glare from far away; he stood out the most, as everyone else there was actually of normal weight and height. He wasted no time in chewing me out for being late.
“This is why I told you to go to bed early! I knew you would be late!” The short man stood out of his seat and pointed a very intimidating finger at me. Nothing’s more frightening than a meatball dressed in a bad white suit pointing at you. However, I swallowed my pride and bowed respectfully.
“I’m sorry, sir…”
As I went down, I eyed the other high council members. They looked uneasy, like they weren’t a fan of Rondall’s tactics either, but they said nothing. Rondall was the head of the high council, and they weren’t, so I guess it made sense.
“Now, Kazuki Sato…” Rondall boomingly began as the others stopped at my heels. I winced again at hearing my real name. I’m sure Evangeline was squealing behind me, though; she loved my real name.
“You were chosen as the Savior of the Unseen ten years ago. You’ve known that this day was coming eventually, the day that you would be called upon to restore balance and order to the world. You’ve been trained in the art of the Bo staff, you’ve refined your abilities as one of the carriers of the great invisibility gene, and you’ve mastered the art of speech craft as a means of negotiation: all of the skills necessary for the Savior.”
It almost seemed like complimenting me was causing him physical pain. Rondall constantly made a groaning sound after each sentence. I glanced back at Evangeline and Don and the three of us snickered a little bit. It was odd; this was a sad moment for all of us, but we still managed to be our same goofy selves. I felt the glares of the high council members on me, so I snapped my head back towards them and refocused my attention on them.
“…You’ve been prepared in every way possible. Now we must let you go. You’ll be deployed to Chikara, a distant Japanese island.”
I didn’t have to turn around to know that Evangeline was smiling from ear to ear.
“This is where we believe the hub of the misfortune in the world is occurring. The new capital of Japan, New Tokyo, is on this island. I shall be giving you orders along the way via communicator.”
My heart sank at the news that I wasn’t rid of Rondall. He held out a small device to me in his monstrous hands. It was a watch, which sort of puzzled me. Nonetheless, I accepted the gadget and fashioned it on to my wrist promptly. I examined it carefully and saw that it had a tiny screen, a speaker, and a microphone. It looked pretty durable, but still breakable. There were tiny buttons on the side where knobs would be on a regular analog watch.
“Now… We must bid you farewell. Stay invisible at all times.” Rondall finally finished, almost happily.
I nodded, not knowing what to say. It suddenly dawned on me; this was it. I was going to leave my home for ten years. I struggled to keep myself from getting too emotional, which was even harder once I turned around. Evangeline, Don, and Master Shields looked on at me with pitiful faces. Eva hugged me first; I squeezed her back just as tightly.
“Take care, Thurston…” She moaned sadly. “I’ll miss you so much. Stay safe.”
I gently rubbed her back. “I’ll miss you too, Evangeline. And I promise that I will.”
After what seemed like hours, she finally released me, and we smiled brightly at each other. Her cheeks were damp again, and I felt a little pang inside of me. I couldn’t bear the sight of her crying. I turned my head away a little bit and went over to Don. He hugged me just as tightly as Evangeline, though not for as long.
“We’re brothers, Thurston. Blood brothers.” He boldly finished, grinning at me. “We’re going to see each other again real soon.”
“I know, Don.” I calmly responded, still holding in my emotion.
“Make sure that you stay out of trouble, man.”
”I will.” I laughed a little, knowing that I would probably be in trouble the whole time. I then turned to face Master Shields. He extended out a hand for me to shake with a smile. I smiled back and firmly shook his hand trying to be manly about it.
“You’ve been an amazing student, Thurston. I would say that you’re on your way to surpassing me.” He continued to grin devilishly.
”I don’t know about that, Master.”
“No.” He nearly interrupted me. “Call me Marcus.”
”Alright, Marcus.” It felt so foreign to address an adult, my superior, that way. “Thank you for everything.” I smiled more and bowed respectfully. He bowed in return.
“Thank you for everything, Thurston. Now, get going.” He snapped up and pointed to Rondall.
It was difficult to get my feet to move, but I somehow managed to shuffle up to the table where the high council members were seated. What happened next was almost a blur; I recall stepping up to Rondall, and I remember him asking me if I was ready or not. I nodded and glanced back towards my friends. Don and Evangeline were weepy eyed, while Master Shields seemed to look on in pride. I turned around again to face Rondall, and he placed a gentle hand on my chest. He started to focus intensely on me, so much so that sweat began to form upon his brow. I remember a wave of fear taking over me as he focused more. The room seemed to melt away to black, like everything and everyone was made of wax and someone put a match to everything. My senses seemed to go dead, and I drifted off to elsewhere.
“Thurston…”
My eyelids pried themselves open on their own. I looked around me to find nothing but a blank sheet of white enveloping my surroundings. The lack of anything mildly discernable was unnerving and almost frightening. The fact that a disembodied voice was speaking to me was also a bit creepy, too. You know, just a little bit.
“Thurston… Save them… Save the people…”
”I will…”
Words spilled over my lips without my control. My heart was so dead set on this truth that it came out as a reflex. How pathetic.
“Please… For me…”
The gentle, soothing voice called out again. I knew this voice. I couldn’t remember where I knew it from for the life of me, though. I didn’t say anything back this time, though. I looked down at my own body to find my familiar clothes; I had on my short, brown jacket with a red stripe darting down it vertically over my blue t-shirt. I was wearing simple, yet ragged, blue jeans held up by a black belt. My tennis shoes were black, white red and were still pretty beat up. I’d done a lot of walking around by this point, so it was to be expected. My long, untamed, black bangs shot down from my forehead and floated just above my eyes. I could sort of see the tips of them as my brown eyes peered upwards at the nothingness before me. An illuminated outline began to slowly take shape before me, though it was far in the distance and I couldn’t make it out. From where I was, it almost looked like the shining outline was reaching out a slow hand to me.
Before I could study the sight before me, the white color surrounding me suddenly washed away, taking the odd figure with it. In its place were blinding, warm lights directly above me. My eyes shot open and were quickly shut again due to the bright lights. I saw spots for a little while as I carefully examined my surroundings. I looked beneath me to see that I was lying on a dirty, cracked sidewalk, and the lights above me were street lights. My throat was suddenly dry; I must not have had much to drink while I was lying unconscious on a sidewalk.
This was it. I was in New Tokyo. My heart seemed to jump out of my chest as I stood up and took everything in. There were enormous figures that resembled buildings in the distance; I must have been just outside the heart of the city.
In my thoughts, I nearly forgot to turn invisible. Slowly, I shut my eyes, calling upon my abilities. However, I couldn’t feel anything change. Usually, there was this feeling I would get when I turned invisible, but it didn’t come this time. I ran over to a small puddle on the side of the road and glanced into my reflection. My face was there, as plain as day. I gulped and felt my heart sink to the depths of my body.
“People can see me… They aren’t supposed to see me…” I panicked in my head.
However, the sight of a police cruiser pulling up to me snapped me out of my scared thoughts; they were simply replaced by terrified ones.
As the car pulled up to me, little did I know that the hands of fate had set into motion a path for me that was far from what I ever could have possibly expected, or even fathomed…
