Scene 2
(The second bell rings and Charlotte Denza enters the school. She enters Mr. Harrison’s class and sits down. She rest’s her head on her arms and Mr. Harrison looks up at her).
Mr. Harrison – Charlotte, look at you! You look exhausted.
Charlotte – I was mostly up all night waiting for my dad to come home.
Mr. Harrison – He didn’t… Did he?
(Charlotte nods her head and Mr. Harrison sits down next to her).
Mr. Harrison – What time did he come home?
Charlotte – About an hour before I had to go to school. I had to help him to bed since he was so tired that he couldn’t even walk. He started to blame everything on me. That it was my fault that mom died, that it was my fault that he has to work so hard. He says that I should get a real job, not just dream about being a dancer on Broadway. What does he think I’ve been doing! I’ve been working 20 hours a week at Hathaway’s restaurant. He thinks that because he works harder means that he can treat me like this. Just last Friday; I actually had to come to school with a black eye and a bloody nose.
Mr. Harrison – I can’t believe that you stayed up so late and still came to school. If you ever need anything, just stop by and see me.
Charlotte – Yeah, thanks Mr. Harrison.
(She walks out of the room and runs into Tristan, who appears to be glad to see her).
Tristan – Oh, hey Lotte.
Charlotte – Hey Tristan, has class started yet?
Tristan – Not for another 6 minutes. You look tired
Charlotte – I am tired… I was wondering if I could stay over your house tonight. My dad’s in a bad mood again. You know how he gets when he’s in his moods.
Tristan – Sure, that would be fine. You’re always invited to stay over my house. Hasn’t my mom told you that throughout the years?
Charlotte (almost laughing) – Only for 8 years. Your family seems so nice. If only I was related to you. It would be a lot better than living with my father.
Tristan – Well… You are like a sister to me. I’ve known you for 16 years. That’s even more years then I’ve known Jordan. And I’ve known him for 12.
Charlotte – I’ll meet you after school today. I might need a ride to dance class this afternoon after class.
Tristan – I’d be glad to give you a ride to your class.
Charlotte – Thanks Tristan, thanks a lot.
(The late bell rings and Jordan takes Tristan by the shirt collar and drags him off).
Tristan – No problem. I’ll see you after school.
(Charlotte blushes and heads off to her class).
(Song, More Than Words)
(An acoustic guitar player is playing in a corner and Lotte sits down next to him).
Charlotte - Saying I love you is not the words I want to hear from you. It's not that I want you. Not to say, but if you only knew. How easy it would be to show me how you feel.
More than words is all you have to do to make it real. Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me. 'Cause I'd already know. What would you do if my heart was torn in two.
More than words to show you feel. That your love for me is real. What would you say if I took those words away? Then you couldn't make things new. Just by saying I love you. More than words. Now that I've tried to talk to you and make you understand. All you have to do is close your eyes. And just reach out your hands and touch me. Hold me close don't ever let me go. More than words is all I ever needed you to show. Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me. 'Cause I'd already know. What would you do if my heart was torn in two. More than words to show you feel. That your love for me is real. What would you say if I took those words away? Then you couldn't make things new. Just by saying I love you. More than words.
(Song Ends)
(The bell rings and Charlotte walks off to class).
