Chapter 1:
The heavens were crying again and she knew why. Unsalted tears kept pouring on her pale skin that glowed under moon’s rays hiding her own tears. Her blonde hair uncurled under the circumstances and her mascara ran down her cheeks. Although she remained quiet on top of the tallest building in New York, she wanted to shout and scream in pain. The streets ran wild with cars and people but it did not fill in the empty void she had within her soul, if she still claimed it.
She closed her eyes and let the wind rushed silently across her. A whispering voice passed her by and she could barely catch those three words she missed hearing from him the most. I love you; a brief message that had her heart pounding faster. Coldness swept across her body, her eyes finally opened only to see the moon vanish behind dark ominous clouds. The rain stopped as the winds increased heavily.
Nina bit her lower lip with her sharp canines to keep herself from screaming. She wiped away the dripping mascara from her eyes and took a deep breath to try and stay calm. She looked down at the city. All simple ignorant people living their lives full of sin. But she had no right to judge.
She sighed and jumped down from the side of the building. Wind rushed upwards, feeling the air shake her as she slowly fell. The wind that pulled her upwards only made her landing much softer as she reached the ground on her two feet. Dropping into the dark musky alley, she covered her light blonde hair and pink dyed bangs with her hooded jacket and began blending in with the rest of the New Yorkers.
Blending in was over-exaggerating. She stood out bold and loud. Her fair peach colored skin was clear, untouched and beautiful just like her glowing complexion in the middle of the night. Her life in the human world gave her more attention than when she was an angel in heaven. Her newfound career had skyrocketed. Her face was well known throughout the world as not only a model, an actress but a singer. She loved to sing. She had always existed before time was established, living her life singing in prayer and praising her God.
Nina headed to ‘The 6th Sin’ a nightclub. Even though it was a public building, only night creatures entered it, mostly because Damien owned it. Those who feared him did not dare step into his territory. Humans came and went but no harm ever occurred to them, they would always leave with missing time if they ever found anything out of the ordinary. It was a sanctuary.
Before she reached the entrance of the club, she pulled out a cell phone from her pocket. Nina made sure before hand that no mascara was dripping down her cheeks but she double checked on her cell phone’s reflection. She then dialed the owner’s cell as she approached the doors. The guards quickly let her in as soon as they saw her. There was no need to look at I.D. or make her wait. They had learned their lesson the first time they had denied her entrance and they were well trained to never let it happen again.
After a few seconds had passed, she hung up. There was no signal inside so she didn’t bother redialing again. She would just have to hunt Damien tonight. It was one of her favorite games.
She walked down the corridor, passing couples and others waiting to make it to the front of the club. All eyes were on her as she walked through but no one said a thing to her. They all knew her face, recognized her figure. Cameras kept going on and off as she walked in almost like a rock star. Or better. Her eyes kept scanning faces but no one was familiar to her. So many fans but few close friends, she hated that. Damien baby, where are you? She repeated in her mind, teasing and taunting tonight’s prey. His presence was made known as loud shrieks echoed all the way to her.
Nina neared the loud shrieks as she picked up a glass of wine from one of the trays a waiter carried. A small circle was visible now, and she knew he hid amongst them. She didn’t have to push through the crowd. They cleared the way because they admired her, feared her. Knowing she was feared made a grin cross her beautiful face. She made it to the center, to the ring leader. He was sitting down on the one chair no one was allowed to sit on. It was his post, his sign of power.
Damien was the son of the wicked one. The one destined for power and many great things. He was also destined to bring destruction and chaos. His aura around him made it known that he was in charge. Even from his father, he took no orders. His wild side had always been an attraction to all girls, especially Nina. No doubt Damien intended it to be. A smile formed as his gleaming blue eyes darted in her direction.
When she knew she had his attention, she quickly took her place on his lap. Her hands entangled around his form, almost lovingly and deadly. She brushed her fingers across his smooth silky brown hair and pulled on it, tilting his head to the side. If it were anyone else doing this to him, Damien would smash their skulls in.
“You’ve been avoiding me, love.” Nina whispered close to his ear only to hear him chuckle softly.
Damien took in her sweet honey scent. Anyone would think they were lovers but Nina wasn’t bound to anyone. He admired that in her yet she had a bad habit of hissing at the wrong people. He tipped her glass so his lips were on it. He sipped on her drink slowly before turning his head to the side to face her. God, she was beautiful. Even a fallen angel was still a beautiful angel. He kissed her cheek, nuzzling against the golden curls of her hair. As his lips moved closer to hers, she pulled to the side immediately. He had foreseen this move so many times he no longer fought it.
“I haven’t.” He said as his gaze went to the crowds that danced on his sanctuary. What was it about her that tested his patience? He could have any girl he wished but the one that seemed out of his reach was the one so close to him. It was like a game of cat and mouse. When he wanted her, she would deny him. If she came to him, so would he. Their love quarrel always involved trying to kill one another. The fun part was guessing if one would really kill the other. Both had the ability to do it, the motive, the reason, the mentality. Yet they were still here, embraced like lovers.
“Where is Sierra?” Damien was also fond of her. Not because she too was beautiful and perfect in every way but because Nina cherished her as her best friend.
She shrugged. “Probably killing and maiming.” She admired her but she was always off getting herself deeper into the dark side. She wondered if that’s why Damien loved her the way he did.
“She wants to be like you. A singer.” Damien whispered to her closely.
Nina frowned but just shrugged. “Are you going to help her?” It was all she could ask him. It was his choice whether Sierra would be as big as Nina. She had the talent to be anything, even an actress but a singer… it was beyond her.
Damien laughed and shook his head. “If God wanted her to sing He would have made her seraphim, or even given her a good singing voice. She’s not that talented. Besides, I don’t need another star hovering in your shadows. Sierra can do what she wants without my support.” He sipped his drink. “She’s a cherub. That’s all she’s good for. Seducing men.”
Seraphims and Cherubs were different. Seraphims were created with six wings to sing and praise God for eternity; while Cherubs were like cupids. To help humans find love.
“If you see her, send her my regards.”
“I got out of my contract for the movie.” Nina bit her lip, hesitantly. She knew how hard Damien had enticed the producers to have her in. More like how many threats it took to finally let them accept her to take the main role. “Maybe Sierra can star in it.”
Damien picked a shot glass and swallowed the hard liquor. “Why?” He asked as he cleared his throat from the burn.
“Too much work.” She answered sarcastically as she leaned in closer to him, her eyes closing.
“I mean why should she star in it? I already have you.”
“She wants to be better. She just needs the chance.”
“I already said no.”
“They hired a prettier girl as my backup.” She said distastefully.
He laughed as he leaned against her as well. “No human can surpass the beauty of an angel.” He said truthfully. His hand began running towards her back but her sudden jerk made him stop. He took another shot of alcohol into his system before he felt Nina’s body weight disappear from his hold. He had forgotten the pain she was constantly enduring. “Where are you going sweetheart?”
Nina got on her knees and held onto his hand. She twisted his wrist to face her. She kissed it and before anyone else noticed, she was drinking from him. After a few seconds had passed, she pulled away from him and licked her lips of any trace of blood. “I’m going home.” She smiled innocently.
Damien gave her a quick nod as he retreated his hand back to his side. He watched her figure disappear into the crowd. He leaned back in his chair and let the music drown his evil intentions. He wasn’t going to let his nature ruin the one person who accepted him for what he truly was. A cold, psychotic killer.
Nina made her way across the building, far away from Damien. She had her fill of blood for the night; it was all she needed from him. Her eyes scanned the people that came and went. Most of them she knew, some were others- humans. It was funny how even surrounded by people, no matter how famous and well known she was, she had no close friends of her own. So many envied her but she felt she was the one who had a right to envy them.
She headed to the bar, where at least she knew the bartender was human and friendly. Damien had conquered his soul which was odd to her. This human had done nothing wrong but here he was at the mercy of his feet. At least till he reached his limit and die. She sat down on one of the stools and spun in it once before the human reached her. He had a nice, sweet smile. Surely he didn’t murder anyone, he didn’t have that sense.
“Do you have anything minty?” She asked leaning in closer to the table as her arms rested on the counter table.
The human nodded. “Sure thing Nina.” He quickly prepared her drink before her and placed it in front. He didn’t keep her long enough to start a conversation before others quickly took his attention.
Pity consumed her but she brushed the feeling aside as she took in the scent of mint. It was a far better smell than the sour pungent smell humans gave off. She downed the rest of her drink before a new smell began sweeping through the nightclub. Everyone could sense a dark presence, something ominous but only those night creatures could tell what it was. They could smell the scent of death lingering in the air. It was approaching.
The angels with their human companions soon began leaving to another part of the club. She knew why. Even the demons began clearing the area. They didn’t dare mess with the incomers.
Nina quickly ordered the same drink again. She didn’t want to be succumbed to her addiction. Death. As the smell approached, Nina felt sickened with disgust. At the same time it was like a rehabilitated smoker returning to smoke. The lingering smell came from one of the dark creatures fallen angels have steered cleared of. Vampires. She cursed under her breath as her eyes caught the vamp guilty of the stench.
The vampire quickly approached the bar. Only a few feet behind her, Nina pulled out change to pay for her drink.
“Leaving so soon… Nina?”
The dark creature smiled. She was almost surprised he was handsome. They needed to be to entice humans. His golden brown hair looked so clean and smooth, cut short complimenting his light brown eyes. His smile was perfect. Yes, he was handsome but about everyone in the nightclub had to be to get in. A strong physique seemed to describe about every male in the club and this vampire had it all.
She wasn’t going to ask how he knew her name. Almost everyone knew her. She nodded her head without a word as she finally paid for her drink.
“Stay a bit longer. It isn’t every day I get to meet someone so infamous.”
Nina laughed softly. “You wouldn’t know that feeling.” She taunted. “Day or not.” She withheld her laughter as she gulped down the last bit of alcohol in her glass. Relieved swept across her when the minty scent overpowered death for those few seconds. “So why are you here?” She quickly added.
The vampire quickly pulled the human bartender in his gaze and ordered an alcohol beverage for the sake to keep with appearances. “Business.” He smiled brilliantly. “I’ve been hearing about this place for a while now.”
“So you thought you might check it out.” Nina cut in to finish his sentence. “Fallen angels don’t mix with Vampires, you know that.” It wasn’t a question, it was a statement. “So really,” she tipped her empty glass. “What business do you have here? If it’s Damien you’re seeking I can-“ she was quickly cut off.
“Oh no, I’m not interested doing business with him. I’m interested in you.” He knew he had said that wrong but before he could correct himself, Nina had set the empty glass down. She was ready to bail on him. “Wait.” He thought carefully this time. Sure she was pretty but he had to keep in mind she was also deadly; if the stories were true. “I need to know how you killed The Reaper.”
Nina gave him a confused look. “How do you know about that?”
“I didn’t.” A wicked smile appeared on his face. Lust caused tension between him and Nina.
She bit her lip and balled her hands into fists. It was something she didn’t want to think about. Vampires were known for their luscious sex parties. Damien would envy them if he wasn’t so much alike to them in that area. Vampires naturally had a strong attraction to the opposite sex, and she was no exception.
“It is true, isn’t it?” The vampire asked. He watched her expression, thoughts running wild in her mind. If it was true or not she would try to deny it but she hadn’t. “I just want to know how you did it.” He said slowly to give her time to think.
“Hey Nina!” Sierra jumped in the short space between the vampire and Nina. She eyed him but flared her nostrils and turned back to her. “I told you the pink bangs would make you distinguished.” She propped her elbows on the counter and got the bartender’s attention. “Sweetie, give me scotch and mix in some drops.”
Sierra loved drops; as in drops of human blood. It was what kept her sane most of the time. It was her human caffeine. Her hair was blonde like Nina’s but it was straight and simple. Her bangs were dyed black. They were like twins with their own differences. Here was a wild, free spirited cherub with an evil streak going. Then there was Nina, reserved, ill-tempered seraphim trying to stop the urge to feel the flow of blood through her hands.
“You have an eye for fashion.” Nina smiled sweetly, trying to avoid the vampire’s gaze. “You might want to talk to Damien.” She began. “He sends his regards.”
Sierra frowned and let out a frustrating sigh. She knew what she expected. “Well. If he wasn’t so close, I’d say how a pain in the ass he is. Oops, too late.” She winked at the bartender who handed her drink. Scotch with drops made the liquid a light red. She took a sip. “Mm. Strong.” She set it down and took out her cell phone from her pocket. Her fingers dashed through the buttons. “Well love. I’ll see you at school.” She chugged the rest of her drink, squinted her eyes and let out a relieved sigh. “Love you.” She gave an airy kiss and took off.
“She’s something. Isn’t she?” The vampire gave off a brilliant smile as his head turned to watch her leave.
Nina rolled her eyes, knowing what his eyes were after. “You know Sierra… loves the attention.”
“And you don’t.” He said with a tone that urged an answer.
“No but I try to help her get it. It never works.”
“She’s pretty but plain. I like your style more. Sassy, and…”
Nina didn’t want to be around him anymore. The stench was messing with her senses. She didn’t hate it; she loved it; that was the problem. She stood up from her seat and began making her way through the crowds of people dancing and laughing. She could tell she was being followed by the vampire very cautiously.
The nightclub was like sacred ground. Everyone had that unspoken rule engraved in their subconscious. She was bound to break it, why not now? Just kill him. Kill him! Those words kept repeating over and over inside her mind but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Not here.
She walked out of the club with many people surrounding her, asking her questions this time. Soon the paparazzi came surrounding her like savage sharks trying to get a chunk of meat. Lucky for them she already fed. She tried to keep with appearances, giving them what they wanted. Shots and poses but she needed to get out. She didn’t bring her own car so she would have to deal with walking in the night; followed and pursued by the people that made her big.
An engine roared next to her. A black Cadillac to her rescue but the scent of death quickly rolled in. Now she had to choose between sharks and a vampire. Without another thought, she opened the door to the Cadillac and jumped in. She waved goodbye to her fans and could only imagine what the news media would make of it.
She didn’t turn to face the driver. She knew who it was. He pulled out of the nightclub parking lot and into the busy streets. The tinted windows gave her a peace of mind. She took a deep breath and sighed.
“Not easy being famous?” He asked breaking the silence between them.
Nina didn’t answer him. It wasn’t hard but it wasn’t easy either. The question popped into her head again. He wanted to know if the story was true. “It’s true.”
The vampire didn’t know what to say to that. He wasn’t expecting to find the notorious Nina in a nightclub, so easily reachable. If he had, he would have prepared a speech but he didn’t. “Where do I drop you off?” He quickly asked. It was the only question he could think of at the moment.
“Three miles up ahead. It’s a white building.” She said simply.
He just nodded as his eyes remained on the road. “How did you kill it?” The question came in abruptly.
She didn’t answer him but she was hesitant. It wasn’t a secret she had killed The first Reaper to ever exist. The question on everyone’s minds was how. A Reaper was an underground creature that would collect souls restlessly. It was neither in The Devil’s side nor in God’s side. It was just simply there collecting the dead. So why did she kill it? She didn’t know the answer for that but she knew the circumstances at that time.
Nina looked to the side as the white building approached in her view. The car pulled to the side, her door facing the entrance to her suite. “I’m not going to tell you that.” She answered him as she opened the door to get out.
“Wait.” The vampire said. “Don’t you want to know why I’m here?”
Nina stared at him blankly. She knew she asked why he was there. He simply hadn’t given a straight answer.
“I need your help… to kill another Reaper.”
Nina quickly closed her door. She didn’t know what to say but one word kept crossing her mind. “Never.”
“It’s for a-“
“I said never!” Nina hissed angrily. She hated repeating herself when she was being very clear. “The last time I did it, He ripped my wings off.” That was all the explanation she needed to give him. She opened her door once more with force.
“Hold on!” The vampire held onto her hand to keep her from leaving.
Without hesitation, Nina released her claws like that of a cat’s. She cut deep into his arm. The deep gash and pain made him release her. “Don’t you ever touch me.” She stood up from her seat and slammed the door behind her. She didn’t look back as she walked inside the white building.
