The Rainy Season
By Josh Rittenhouse
Smiling faces passing by
fall into the open sky
while herds of children make the rounds
and smash their small fists on the ground
A loving mother with eyes of blue
paints the wind a golden hue
the wind is happy for the change
and makes the clouds eject the rain
A man that walks a narrow path
raises his head and begins to laugh
as the rain fills up his eyes
and makes him think of things that die
A passing cat without a tail
lets loose with an evil wail
it stalks along upon its paws
and kills at will, without a cause
A mangy mutt that no-one sees
lays upon a bed of leaves
He licks his wounds with a long, wet tongue
then cries until the day is done
A little girl who lost her way
was on the leaves just yesterday
She cried alone just like the dog
then fell asleep in a hollow log
They found here there when morning came
and though she looked completely sane
She pointed at the dog and said
"I want to eat your severed head!"
The dog stood firm, yes, stood his ground
And from his throat came an awful sound
The sound of feet and drums and cars
of broken dishes, buildings and stars
They stood and faced each other then
and scared away the common men
They stood and stared for many years
and fed upon each other's fears
They fell asleep upon their feet
then just collapsed into piles of meat
A little boy came and scooped some up
and fed it to a newborn pup
The pup grew fast and ate the boy
gnawing upon him just like a toy
Then spit out the bones and simply died
and joined the many who often lied
And that is how the story ends
I'm glad you read along, my friends
And next time that you feel the rain
remember life is never sane
