Suzanna Julia de Zieklre was promised to the heir of the du Lacqre family the very moment that she was born. Her marriage day looms on the horizon and she wants nothing more than to escape the bit and bridle being forced over her head. In a desperate and foolhardy attempt to avoid losing the last of her freedom, Julia runs off to join the traveling theatre troupe aboard the skychaser Klökwork Princeling. She takes the name Suzanna Julia Klöuke, effectively stripping herself of her noble identity and becoming a member of the lower class. Life aboard the Klökwork Princeling is gritty, grimy, and utterly fabulous until one of the guests aboard her is found brutally murdered. With no cities in sight and a worse danger lurking on Sphir's surface, the troupe and the Princeling's guests have nowhere to run and nowhere to hide.
