Poem For Heather
By Joshua Rittenhouse

Hey! Come on in!
Yeah, I know that it's a little messy.
When you left, my heart just got messed up.
I try to pick up, but it won't let me.

Yeah, don't worry about those holes.
When you left, you took those pieces.
I've tried to fill the gaps with other things.
They just don't fit as well as you.

Here, have a blanket.
It gets really cold here.
I tried to get my heart to warm up.
There just isn't any fire here since you left.

Here, take a flashlight.
It's usually pretty dark here.
You took the light with, when you left.
Nothing shines as bright as you did.

While you're here, would you sing?
The silence is so devastating.
When you left, my heart stopped singing.
It never sang louder than when you were here.

But, it looks like you are ready to go.

The mess is accumulating.
The holes are getting bigger.
The air is a bit cooler.
The light is starting to fade.
The silence is deafening.

I'm sorry that you don't live in my heart anymore.
It was good to have you here today though.
I hope we can do this again soon.
Good-bye. I love you.
