Chapter 8: Reminiscing

I know you’ll never read this, but if by some miracle you do, I want you to know that I still remember. I remember all the long summer days at the lake having water gun fights and drinking ice-cold coke straight from the bottle. I remember having watermelon eating contests on my back porch. Do you remember the time when you were so sure you were going to win and then you choked on a seed and I still beat you? I about died laughing.

We used to have snowball fights in the winter with forts and uncharted territory. We would stay outside for hours waging war on one another until our cheeks were red and our fingers numb. You always let me win because I would get upset if you didn’t. And then we’d fall laughing to the snow and make adjoining snow angels before warming ourselves by the fire with hot cocoa.

You used to win me stuffed animals from the quarter machine and those cheap plastic rings that I would wear until they turned my fingers green. You would bring me flowers when I was sick and sing to me in that silly tone to cheer me up whenever I was down. You insisted on holding my hand everywhere we went even when our friends teased us about being joined at the hip.

Yes, I remember. And even though we used to be the best of friends, I’m glad we both opened up new chapters in our lives. We weren’t meant to be, and I’m finally ok with that. I’m happy for you and you’re new life.

p.s. Thanks for all the good memories.
