Just a heart-warming Christmas one shot.

I wait for you beside the door

I wonder where you are.

It's getting late, and feeling cold

I wonder if you're far.

You promised me a Christmas night

You said you would be here.

But now it's almost twelve o'clock

Out the glass I peer.

The candle wax is dripping now

The fire seems so low.

If I don't see your headlights soon,

I'll fear you're lost in snow.

The grand clock ticks

And then chimes its song.

How sad it seems,

Your aura gone.

With a heaving sigh

I turn away.

As tears fall down

I start to pray.

Before I even said Amen

I heard the door unlock.

I flipped around, my heart atoned

That you have come is shock.

You hold a gift

Wrapped fine in red.

But my eyes are for you,

The rest I'll leave unsaid.

You drop the gift

And run to me.

"I'm sorry, babe,

Let me explain and you will see.

"I left real early to get a gift

I went downtown and looked around

But what I browsed

Just wasn't enough.

Not sentimental,

Not charming,

Just plain old stuff.

"And then I remembered

You love simple things.

Everything seemed too large and extreme."

"So I left for a store that fit your taste

I searched for what seemed like an hour.

When I finally found the perfect gift,

The wind was starting to howl.

"I rushed through the traffic

The winter and snow,

I was gonna be late!

I wasn't going to show!

"You can't imagine the relief

When I pulled up the drive,

A flame in the windows,

My heart shocked alive.

"So open your gift and see what's inside,

I picked up the gift,

And peeled back the red.

I opened the box,

And guess what it said?

'Keep going' I read as I open the flaps

Of another small box

With colorful wraps.

And inside that box is another

More brightly wrapped box.

It says 'Almost there!'

Could it be a pair of socks?

I know I'd be happy anyway,

But as I open this one

I have reached the end.

There's simply a rose,

Petals white-hemmed.

Before I could stop them

My tears start to fall.

What a beautiful gift,

Not simple at all.

It's full of your love

It resembles your heart.

Beyond this, a note,

I tear the envelope apart.

Inside it says four simple words:

'I love you so'

"That's not all," You say with a smile

I look up at mistletoe.

And as you lean down

Glowing in the firelight

I think to myself,

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
