Mercy Me…

Preface

She wore her sky blue bonnet and corset dress. Hoping that the Duke will see her as beautiful and grant her favor. Putting on her shoes that her mother gave her as a baby shower gift and the necklace that her father gave her before he died, a soft knock was heard from downstairs. She then ruffled her amber hair and looked at herself in the mirror.

Pregnant again...

A knock was heard again. She looked deep into her ocean blue eyes and blushed at her own beauty. Another knock was heard, this time more loudly.

She then trotted downstairs and answered the door. A smile charmed her as he looked down at her protruding belly.

"What's the name of the child?" The man asked.

"I haven't decided." The man then peered up at her underneath black spiky hair with green eyes.

"Why haven't you? The child will be born soon, and you have yet to come up with a name for him-"

"'Him'? It's a boy?" The guy then blushed.

"I wasn't supposed to tell you."

"Why? Is it because I had a miscarriage with our first son? Don't worry; I took tests with my doctor. He said that my kid will live, and I'm keeping this one."

"But...what if the Duke-"

"He will. He must. I will not leave that house until my baby is accepted in this society. With or without a name." The guy then walked up to her and hugged her.

"I'm glad you made this choice. I was starting to get worried. Especially when you didn't do that for our first child."

"Needn't you worry. Our child will be beautiful." Then they pulled away, and looked at each other.

"Like you?" The guy asked which made her smile.

"It's a possibility that he will look like me, but he will have your smile and your hair." Then she started ruffling his hair, and that made him chuckle.

"Really? You think so?"

"I know so. And he will be handsome like you. Just think love, in a few years or so, he will have women of all ages lined up to meet him." Then the man stared into space, envisioning that happening as tears of happiness welled up in his eyes.

"That's my boy." He said, happily.

Then all at once, everything went wrong.

A silhouette of an angry mob with torches and pitchforks came charging towards them.

"Look outside!" She yelled, as he looked outside and he gasped.

"They've found us... Quick, run out the back door, through the woods, and straight to the Duke's house." Tears began to well up in her eyes.

"Without you?" He then looked at her and headed for the door. He then bolted it with his hands. He looked at her with a look of sadness, worry, regret, and sympathy.

"Yes, without me." Then she felt tears stain her cheeks. "For now."

He then took off his pentagram necklace, and gave it to her.

"With this, I will always be with you, okay?" Then she ran up to him and-with the necklace in her hands- and placed a tender kiss on his lips.

"There's a reason for everything, Imogene. We will get through this. I know we will." Then she backed away slowly and ran to the back door never looking back as she completed her mission.
