Prologue: Goodbye To A Good Guy
You know those moments when you decide to just take life slow and keep it simple and then fate decides to be a controlling bitch and throws you a curve ball? Well, my entire life is that moment. No more smoking. Boom, I get really stressed and just need one more. No more cockiness. Boom, there's a moron who thinks he's the best thing since sliced bread and someone (yes, that would me) needs to put him in his place. No more investigating. Boom, there's a case. You read right, I said investigating. I may be seventeen, but I promise, I'm better than most detectives. It's in my blood, literally. My family has been in the business for decades, going back to my great grandmother.
Anyway, I bet you're all wondering what this case is about. Well, before I tell you how I fit into it all, let me tell you about the week before I arrived in the little town of Water Fields…
The night was a warm one, but I don't think anyone at the Bridges' residence would have know or even cared if it wasn't. You see, school started in a weeks time and this was the annual party to end the summer holidays before all the teens started get ready for another year of mindless dribble people call school work. What makes you think I'm an A student? Yeah right.
Anyway, everyone was having a great time, dancing to the loud music, drinking the hidden alcohol and smoking…stuff (cough, cough). Anyway, they were all enjoying the night. Roxanne "Roxy" White, a cheerleader and one the prettiest girls you'll ever meet, was searching for her boyfriend at that moment. He was with her a second ago and then he suddenly disappeared into thin air.
While Roxy was doing that, Jason Carr was taking care of his own business. And by business, I mean trying to get a girl into a private room for some touchy touchy fun…if you catch my drift. If you don't, it means you're too young, so let's keep it that way. I'm trying to be PG13 here.
While he was making his move, Chase Masters was busy partying the night away with alcohol, weed and the loud music which could be heard down the street. He was party animal and worse when he had a little alcohol in him. He would get onto tables and chairs, dance with anything that moved and have one hell of time. Tonight was no different…at least not at the beginning.
While Chase was enjoying his party time, Michael "Mikey" Hunter was playing DJ for the night. A real DJ was hard to come by in this small town, so computers were the next best thing. This boy could do something as simple as play poker on the internet to someone as complicated as hacking into NASA. He wasn't a popular child, but Ben Bridges liked him and knew him and that kept any bully off of the 15-year-old.
Now, who is Ben Bridges? Ben Bridges was the boy hosting this party. The boy who had a lot of friends. The boy who didn't care who you were as long as you were alright. The boy helped the needed and defended the meek. The boy who was the town star. The boy who was going somewhere. I bet you're all wondering why I'm mentioning these random people so quickly. Because they're about to become my new best friends for the first two weeks that I spend in this town.
Everything was perfect that night. The music was playing, the people were dancing and laughing and having a great time. But what started off as a night of celebration would end as a night of tragedy. It would end with a gunshot ringing through the neighbourhood. It would end with the teens all moving for Ben's room. It would end where Roxy would scream as though she was being attacked and Mikey crying as though going through torture. It would end with Jason trying to lift the body off the ground and with Chase calling 911. It would end with Ben Bridges dead.
It would end with the suicide of the town's star…
