"He told you that he still lives with his mom?"
Angela nodded her head before taking another sip of her third beer. As soon as she got home from her date, Ryan called her, asking how it went. After her sad response, he decided to go over and cheer her up.
"Where did you find this moron?"
"I met him at a bar and gave him my number. I guess I'm the moron in this situation."
Ryan moved over on the couch and wrapped his arms around Angela. He kissed her gently on the top of his head, causing the butterflies to move around in Angela's stomach.
Angela and Ryan knew each other since college. They had a science course together during freshman year, and ever since they were best friends. After college, they didn't grow apart, only closer.
The only problem? Angela was hopelessly in love with her best friend. The very obvious cliché.
"You're not a moron."
Angela let her eyes flutter closed as she breathed in Ryan's musky scent. The crush started after their sophomore year. They didn't have any classes together, but they still remained the closest of friends, which meant a lot to Angela.
Angela didn't want all the focus to be on herself, so she tried to change the subject. "Didn't you say you had a date tonight?"
Ryan shook his head. "Nope. Some girl asked me out, but she bailed last minute."
Angela hated asking Ryan about his love life, but she didn't want to make things awkward. "No ladies in your life right now?"
"Only you, babe."
Angela smiled sadly. She knew there wasn't strong meaning behind his words. "Right, only me."
Tears started forming in Angela's eyes, but she pushed them away before Ryan could see. She was used to crying in his arms. Ryan always tried to comfort her, but he never knew that he was the one causing the tears.
There were nights where Angela was brave. She would say certain things, and hint at certain things. It would take an idiot not to understand what she was trying to do. And Ryan was just that idiot.
"I'm sorry for calling you to come over here," whispered Angela. She knew that she relied on Ryan too much.
"I called you, remember? Don't worry about it. So now do you want to watch reruns of Friends or what?"
Angela shook her head. "Don't you ever worry about spending your life alone?"
Ryan frowned and looked at the worried expression on his best friend's face. He didn't understand Angela's random emotional shift. "Well, yeah, but we'll always have each other."
Angela sat up straight, causing Ryan's arms to fall to his side. She loved the way his muscles flexed when he held her closer to him. But she knew that it was also very distracting.
"Stop saying that! Stop saying that it's okay that we only have each other when it's not!"
Ryan put his hand on Angela's shoulder to try to calm her down. "Angie, calm down. I'm not going anywhere. You know that, right?"
Angela pinched the bridge of her nose with her fingertips. What she was about to say ran through her mind every day. She spent nights in bed tossing and turning, while thinking about it.
"What's going to happen when one of us actually has a successful relationship? One of us is just going to be pushed aside. Then what exactly is going to happen?"
"What are you talking about?"
Tears started to brim around Angela's eyes. Even if her date were a sexy doctor, who didn't live with his mother, she still wouldn't have invited him up to her apartment. No matter how amazing the guy would have been, he would still be no Ryan.
"I'm 27 years old and I haven't had a real boyfriend since high school. You're the closest guy I know and…and god, why do we do this to ourselves?"
"Angela, can you please just explain this to me? You're being so damn vague."
"I can't, I just can't."
Angela got up from the couch to head into the bathroom. She ran through what would happen in her head so many times. She would throw herself at Ryan, explaining her feelings, and he would just stare at her. At first he would be sweet, and let her down easily, but then things would get awkward and their friendship would be over.
It was just too much for Angela to handle.
She closed the door behind her in the bathroom, locking it before turning on the light. She looked in the mirror as the tears flowed freely from her eyes.
Ryan walked over to the bathroom door and sat against it. Ryan looked around Angela's apartment. Although he played dumb, he knew what Angela was talking about, and it killed him every time to see her cry, knowing that it was he causing the tears.
Ryan didn't know how he was going to say what he was about to say, but he tried his best at explaining his thoughts.
"Do you remember Bobby from college? We used to play basketball together and he had the hugest crush on you. But all he really wanted to do was screw you. Typical college guy. I told him we were dating and he stopped talking about you that way, well to me at least."
He heard Angela sniff on the other side of the door. "Yeah, I know. He told me that if we ever broke up, he was there. I was confused, but I just went along with it. Why are you telling me this?"
"I couldn't stand the thought of you being with another guy. I wanted to punch him in the throat whenever he talked about you like that."
Ryan nodded his head. "You're my best friend. I didn't want some scum to talk about you like that. At first I thought it was just because we were such close friends, but it was just so easy to tell him that we were in a relationship. I'm not going to lie, I have thought about it."
Angela felt her heart thumping louder in her chest. Angela sat down on the floor to hear what Ryan had to say.
"Thought about what?"
"Us. But if we were in a relationship, a real one, it just wouldn't have worked out. College relationships never do. It's all sex and alcohol. There's no long time commitment in that."
"But what about after college?" Angela asked.
"I don't know. How could it have worked out? We're friends, Angela."
"But you've thought about us being more than that?" Angela meant to say it as a statement, but it came out as more of a question.
"I have, how could I not? Do you know how many times I've thought about it? God, remember when we went to Florida with Brittany and her friends? That was like hell for me."
Angela rested her head against the cold door. "Why?"
Ryan let out a nervous laugh. "Have you seen yourself in a bikini?"
A blush formed on Angela's cheeks. "Oh."
Ryan wanted to Angela to open the bathroom door. He wanted to go back to watching reruns of Friends while getting drunk on beer. He just didn't know how to go about this given the discussion they just had.
So what did he do? He decided that he would give Angela some breathing room. "Angela, we're best friends. If we tried to be anything more than that, it would just mess us up. Don't you get that?"
The little spark of hope that was ignited in Angela's mind slowly died out. "What?"
"I'm not going to let the lust factor in our relationship ruin it. We have been best friends for nine years. I'm not going to let this stupid longing for you get in the way of that."
Ryan stood up and ran his fingers through his hair. "I know that this isn't exactly the lightest of discussions. I just think that we both need to take some time and just…relax a bit. So, I'm going to head back to my place, and I'll give you a call tomorrow. Okay?"
Angela didn't understand why Ryan was leaving, but she didn't want to stop him from doing what he wanted to do.
Ryan took Angela's silence as his queue to leave her alone. He waited a few seconds before walking towards the door and showing himself out.
Angela couldn't stop the tears that fell down her cheeks.
When Angela didn't open the door, Ryan knocked. "Angela! Open the door. It's me!"
He heard the door from the other side of the hall open. Ryan turned around, only to be met with Angela's elderly neighbor.
"Oh, I'm sorry about the noise, ma'am. I'm just looking for Angela."
"She didn't tell you? I don't know where she went, but I saw her with a big suitcase yesterday. She just left. I hope nothing's wrong. Her eyes were really red, like she was crying."
Ryan stepped away from the door and walked towards the old lady. "Yes sir. I don't know where she went, but she seemed to be in a rush."
Ryan shook his head. "I have to go."
Ryan tried calling Brittany, but her phone was off. He only knew of one more place to look.
Ryan knew that Angela had feelings for him. He had feelings for her as well, he just figured it would complicate things. Why ruin a perfect friendship for experimenting with a relationship?
But then Ryan wondered what he was going to do if Angela didn't return to his life. He didn't even know how to start with that thought, it simply hurt too much.
Ryan closed his eyes and tried to think about where his life was going. He wasn't the kind of guy that needed to be in a relationship to be happy. He didn't sleep around. Ryan thought about what a relationship would be like with Angela.
Ryan knew they would have a good relationship. He was just worried about it ending. What if they got into a fight and messed everything up? He took his phone out of his jacket pocket and scrolled through his phonebook. He looked at Angela's name and decided that he was willing to risk it.
When Angela's first boyfriend dumped her, she turned to her parents. So when her best friend broke her heart, she got on the first train to Connecticut to turn to them once again.
Angela planned on spending the entire day in bed, but her plans were ruined when her mom opened her bedroom door. "Angela?"
Angela groaned before sitting up in her bed. "Yeah?"
"Someone's here to see you."
She looked at her mother in confusion. "What? Who's here?"
Angela's mother stepped out of the way to let Ryan enter. "Oh."
Her mother walked out of the room before Ryan shut the door behind him. "Angela."
"Why are you here? You made it very clear that you didn't want to deal with me on Friday."
Ryan sat on the edge of her bed as Angela wrapped her comforter tighter around her.
"Just hear me out. You're my best friend, and I need you in my life. That's why I didn't want to pursue any sort of relationship with you. I was scared about what would happen if it ended badly. But then I realized that our friendship was ending by me not saying anything. I will always be here for you. And I want you to always be here for me. You're mine. And I'm yours. It's a whole big possession thing. Point is: I love you. And I know that you love me too."
"If you love me so much, then why did you wait nine years to tell me?"
"I was afraid! I kept thinking, what if it's just lust, what do I do then? But it's not just lust. You don't just lust after someone for nine years! I love you Angela. I don't want to be afraid anymore."
Angela looked up at Ryan. She let the comforter fall around her as she crawled to the side of the bed he was sitting on. "What happens if it doesn't work out?"
"It will, I promise you," whispered Ryan.
"How do you know that?"
"Because I love you."
And with that, Ryan leaned forward and captured Angela's lips with his own. He wrapped his arms around her wait while Angela's hands wrapped tautly around his neck.
Ryan was scared about what was going to happen, but he couldn't seem to care anymore.
My first challenge response! Yay. Some parts might be awkward, because when I first wrote it, it came out to be like 4,000 words, which didn not meet the challenge requirements. The challenge was from SKoW- a great website that I suggest you check out!
