I sat on my wooden chair holding my knees to my chest crying as I stared out the window. It was beautiful outside the grass was green, the sun was radiant and little birds flew by my window as if saying 'hello' to me. The fountain sparkled brightly in the sunshine and no one would have been able to tell that a week before it had been full of blood. All this sharply contrasted with my depressing mood. I felt a sharp pain of emptiness thinking of mornings as Zane would wake me up on days like this. My thoughts were quickly interrupted by a knock at my door. "Lori, can I come in?" Hunter called trying to coax me into letting him in.
"Go away; I don't want to see anyone right now," I said trying to hold onto my tears. I listened there was complete silence.
I closed my eyes and tried to remember of that day. Zane and I were in a field with a tree sitting next to the river bank behind our house. We were very young. I rested my head on his broad chest and we sat talking for hours. "So why do we live in the country?" I asked him.
"I don't know," He replied placing his arm on my back. "Maybe mom and dad liked it here better," He added.
"How did we become so rich?" I asked sitting up and staring deep into his blue eyes. He was silent and I asked again.
"I heard you the first time. I can't answer that question I promised mom," He replied hugging me. He stood up and dove into the clear crystal water. I ran for him and dove. My dream was interrupted by a loud knock on the door.
"I said go away!" I exclaimed opening the door to reveal my mother. "Oh, sorry," I replied sitting on my bed. She walked over to me and sat down. "God can you stop being proper for one day," I said out of disgust. I had never seen my mother with pain in her eyes. She lost her oldest and I was treating her like crap. "I'm sorry it's just…just…just-" I began to cry in her dress.
"Lori, look at me," She said softly. I stared at her and she wiped my tears. "You don't have to be like this," She said with distain.
"Well how am I supposed to act?" I asked walking to the window.
"You are a princess and you need to forgive and forget," She replied.
"What is that supposed to mean?" I exclaimed looking at my mother. "Why do you sound so heartless?" I asked with anger. I collapsed to the floor crying. My mother was silent and she helped me up.
"Lori just because he's gone doesn't mean you can't keep the memories," She hugged me and I continued to cry as she brushed my hair out of my face. "Lori maybe you should take violet out," She replied as I wiped the tears off my cheek. I walked own the stairs and found all our family and friends down stairs wandering around our house.
"Lori, where are you going?" Hunter asked grabbing my arm.
"Hunter, let me go I'm going on a ride," I replied as I looked at his hurt face. "I'll be back soon," I replied as he let me go. I continued walking down the stairs when I reached the bottom everyone faced me. I looked a little uncomfortable so I curtsied and ran for the hall way behind me. I reached the door connecting to the barn, but I was stopped by Mollie calling to me.
"I am so sorry for you're loss," She said placing her hand on my shoulder. I smiled softly hoping she would leave me. I turned around and opened the door to the barn. "Where are you going?" She asked me. I took a breath and turned around.
"I just need some time alone," I replied closing the door. I walked over to a horse with blue eyes, a silver main, a brown body, and a white face. I looked down and in a bucket there was a bouquet of violets sitting next to her. I guess my mother knew I was coming out here so I picked each flower one by one and placing them in her main. I kissed her soft nose and climbed on. We left and I let Violet take over. She could tell I was hurting and I rested my head in her soft main taking deep breaths of the violets in her main. After a few minutes I felt Violet jam her breaks. I looked up and my calm mood was replaced by depression. I got off her back and slowly walked to an old looking tree. I examined it and then I looked at the tree carefully and remembered the little markings Zane used to show my growth.
"Why would you bring me here," I said with anger as I leaned against the tree. I guess I scared Violet because she backed up and quickly ran back to my house. "Who needs you anyway," I screamed watching her run in the distance. I looked back at the tree and ran into it collapsing at the base and crying my heart out. The more I cried the more emptiness I felt. I cried holding onto that tree for a while. I looked up and saw the sun reflect off the river. I walked over to the river and placed my feet in the icy cold water. I lay down on the soft grass and closed my eyes.
"Lori?" I herd a voice ask. I opened my eyes and saw a black figure standing above me. I stood up and when my eyes cleared up I saw Jeanine standing in front of me.
"Why are you here…oh wait I remember," I said looking away from her.
"Lori I know how you feel," She said placing her hand on my shoulder.
"No you don't…You only knew him for a month," I said pushing her hand off me. "You only fell for him because you knew he was a-" I stopped and thought for a minute. She had no clue Zane was a prince. I thought scolding myself.
"You know what you push everyone who comes close to you away. I hope you and my brother are happy," She said walking back to the house leaving me once again with my thoughts. I slowly followed her back to the house.
"I'm sorry," I said hugging Jeannine.
"It's ok," She replied placing her hand on my head. We walked into my house and I sat on the couch looking at the TV. Soon this a guy my age sat next to me on the couch. I made I contact with him he made me feel very uncomfortable.
"Hi, I'm Kyle," He said grabbing my hand and shaking it. I looked in his dark brown eyes that looked like a black hole sucking everything up in site.
"I'm Lori," I hesitated. "Who are you here with?" I asked him.
"Oh maybe you know him, Hunter he's my brother," He replied my eyes widened. I felt weird around him. I stood up and walked for my barn. I pulled Violet in and placed her in her stall. When I turned around Kyle was standing behind. He grabbed my hand and placed me on a stool next to Violet's stall.
"Kyle I just want to b-" I started but he placed his index finger on my lips.
"I have to tell you this. Your fiancé is lying to you. I tried to stop him but he punched me in the face that is how I got this shiner," He said pointing to his eye.
"Kyle what are you talking about," I said standing up and looking at him.
He wrung his hands nervously. He looked at me like a child and like word vomit he exclaimed, "Hunter killed your brother!" I fell onto the stool. My heart beat so hard it felt like it was going to burst. My world began to spin franticly. "I am so sorry you herd this from me. He threatened to kill me if I told you," He looked at me quizzically and walked away. I couldn't believe it after everything he said to Zane in front of me. I hated Hunter I don't think I would ever forgive him. All these thoughts ran in my mind. I slowly walked in the house and into my room. I sat on my bed crying and thinking about Hunter and his lie he said to my brother.
I sat in my room writing a letter to my family. I hated everything and everyone. Why? That was the one word that popped into my head and nothing more. When I finished writing I looked at my clock blinking eleven thirty. I opened my door and walked slowly past Hunter's room to get to the staircase I walked down the stairs and into the kitchen. I placed the note on the table and looked up; above our kitchen table my mother keeps a dagger that reminds her of my father. He gave it to her on their wedding day. I pulled it off the hook and examined it. In my mind there was no other solution I placed the dagger to my chest.
"Lori, NO!" I herd a familiar voice scream. I turned the light on and my heart filled with hate.
