What They Don't Know

She rests her head against the cool window pane:

Her mummy and daddy are fighting again.

She looks down at the street and the people who pass -

At the whole big wide world behind one sheet of glass -

She sees children who skip on their trip down the road

With their puppies on leads as they make their way home;

There are grannies in shops where they fill up their trollies

And babies content in their prams with their lollies.

The little girl turns up her shop-lifted walkman

To drown out the screams as her dad beats her mum.

She pretends that she's somewhere far, far away

- In a sunflower field on a hot summers day -

Instead of the grey flat with damp grungy walls

And a bed made of papers strewn over the floor

While the people walk by on the street down below

- Not a notion to save her from what they don't know.

AN: This was my most requested at my writers' group. Wrote it years ago.
