The Eleven
"Mom, what was the purpose of moving up here again?" I whine from the backseat of the car, where I'm glaring out the window.
"We are moving up here because my grandparents used to live up here and it's a beautiful area and we get the house for free." My mom says over her shoulder to me as she navigates her way through the streets.
"But… it's so small." I whisper.
"I know. It's only slightly smaller than our old town." We turn a corner in the road, and then we're suddenly faced with this huge school. Ok well it's not really huge, but it's got two floors, so for me, that's huge. "That is the school you're going to be attending. Yes it's big, I know. But you'll like it."
"Is it like… a boarding school?" That's sure what it looked like.
"Um… no." She says, as we turn yet another corner.
"Sure. Whatever." Under my breath I whisper, "Stupid snobby rich people." 'cause that's what the kids going to the school were most likely going to be.
Soon enough my mom is turning the car into a long gravel driveway, that makes a path through the trees. When we finally emerge at the end of said driveway, I see the house the two of us are going to be living in for who knows how long. It's got that scary feel to it, and it looks like a house you would see on some horror movie. Well isn't that just great?
My mom pulls up and parks, and I get out of the car and go around to open up the trunk.
"So this is your grandparent's house?" I ask, looking up at the house.
"Yep." She answers, then grabs for her duffel bag.
Grabbing my bags, I go up to the front door. Putting one of the bags down, I test the handle to see if the door is unlocked, and it is, so I grab the bag and head inside. The inside is basically like the outside. There's not anything there, except for a few old mirrors on the walls. The living room is to the right, and I peek in there on my way to the staircase.
There's a large portrait over the fireplace, but other than that the room is basically bare.
Heading up the staircase and into the hallway, I start searching for a room to call my own. Peeking into different rooms, I don't see anything that even looks remotely interesting. It's all the same. Bland colors and peeling wallpaper.
I want a room with character. Or at least the potential to have a good character.
After looking into room after room, I'm about to turn right around and demand to live in the backyard.
Sighing, I turn to the last door on the hallway. It looks like a closet door, but you never know. Maybe it's like harry Potter's room in the Sorcerer's Stone.
That wouldn't be too great…
Placing my hand on the door knob, I try to open it, but it won't budge. Frowning, I try again.
Must be locked.
"Hey mom!" I call.
"Yes?" she yells back from somewhere inside the house.
"Is there a key to this room up here?" I ask, looking at the door.
"The one at the end of the hallway?"
"Yeah, that one."
"Yes, are you sure you want that room?" Her voice gets closer and I look over my shoulder at her as she walks down the hallway towards me.
"So it is a room?" I ask.
"Yes, it is a room. Whenever I used to come here to spend time with my grandparents and cousins, we didn't like going near this door because my grandparents would always make it seem like something scary was up there." She pulls out a key from her pocket, and I recognize it to be a Skeleton Key.
She unlocks the door, hands me the key, and then leaves in a rush. I guess she never got over the whole 'scared' thing.
Pulling the door open, I look through the doorway to see a small staircase leading up to another door. Grabbing my bag, I walk up the stairs, and open the door at the top.
Stepping through that door, I look at the room. It's pretty big, and instead of bland colors everywhere, this room… pops. The walls are painted a really pretty crimson color, that's faded slightly, with a few black designs here and there. There's a bookcase against the opposite wall, with a few books still sitting on its shelves. There's another door next to that, which, I assume, is the bathroom, and next to that is yet another door, which is probably the closet.
In the middle of the room there's a big bed, with a metal frame. The covers are crimson and black, as are the pillows. Next to the bed is a small table, with a little antique lamp.
To my left, there's a little alcove sort of thing, that curves in a semi-circle, that's raised up off the ground, so there's a few steps to get to it. In the middle there's a little table with a stained glass top, and two plush chairs next to it. The whole little area is surrounded by windows, so I can see the trees outside in the front yard.
Walking over to the bed, I drop my bag on the blankets and turn around to go back downstairs and outside to get more.

By the time I'm done dragging all of my bags up into my new room, and unpacking them, its eleven o'clock at night.
Getting up from the position I had on my floor so that I could shove my suitcases under my bed, I go downstairs to get something for dinner.
Entering the kitchen, I try to be quiet so I won't wake up my mom, who is probably already asleep.
Searching the fridge, I try to find something that I don't have to cook. After a few minutes, I settle on an apple, and I eat it quickly before throwing away the core, washing my hands and going back upstairs.
I lock both doors behind me with the skeleton key, and then walk around the bed to the closet. Opening the doors, I pull out some pajamas before going into the bathroom to take a shower and change.
******
When I'm done with my shower, I put on my pajamas, brush my teeth and dry my hair. Turning off the light, I go back out into my new room and climb into the bed.
I lie there for a few moments, staring out the window directly across from me.
It's dark outside, and there are millions of stars littering the sky, surrounding the moon, which I have a clear view of.
Curling up, I turn off my lamp and stare out the window until I gradually fall asleep.
******
In the morning, my mom wakes me up by pounding harshly on the door at the bottom of the stairs.
"WAKE UP SELENA! YOU HAVE TO GO TOUR THE SCHOOL TODAY! YOU'RE STARTING TOMORROW!" Ugh. My mom wastes absolutely no time.
Rolling out of bed, I shiver slightly when my feet hit the cold floor, before stumbling towards my closet, and pulling out some skinny jeans from the small dresser inside, and a band T-shirt. I also grab a belt, socks, and my converse.
I get dressed slowly, and take at least fifteen minutes fixing my hair and makeup just how I like it.
"COME ON!" I hear my mom shout from somewhere, and I roll my eyes. Turning off all the lights, I put the skeleton key in my pocket, grab my messenger bag, and head downstairs, locking the doors behind me.
"Why do we have to go so early?" I whine, stomping into the kitchen, where my mom has a pop-tart waiting for me on a plate.
"It's not early, Selena. We're supposed to be there at three. It's two-thirty now."
I glance over at the clock, and sure enough, it's two-thirty.
"Y'know, I was hoping for a few days to myself here, without going to school… why do I have to start tomorrow?" I ask, finishing my pop-tart and putting the plate in the sink.
"Because I said so." We go outside and get into the car. "Oh yeah, we're going shopping for furniture and stuff when we're done there." She says, pulling out onto the road.
"Um… I still don't get why we couldn't just bring out stuff from the old house."
"I would have to redecorate the whole house if we did that! And don't you like it as it is? It's so pretty."
"Stop daydreaming, I really don't want to become part of a tree." I say dryly, and she glares at me.
"Oh be quiet. You know I wouldn't crash."
Yeah. Sure.
The rest of the ride is quiet, until we pull into the school's parking lot.
As we're walking towards the front doors, my mom turns to me and says, "by the way, school here ends at four and starts at eight."
"Really!?" I say, kind of excited. That means I get an hour to sleep in, because my old school started at seven.
"Yeah. Thought you'd like that…" She opens the door for me, and I walk in. The first thing I see is the huge staircase to the left of the door, that splits into two different stair cases further up, kind of like in Harry Potter. Then I notice the students. Some are sitting on said staircase, and some are hanging out in the lounge-type area to the right of the doors.
The kids immediately look at us when we walk through the doors.
Attention. Great…
Flushing slightly, I allow my mom to lead me towards a door labeled 'Office'. There's a large plexiglass window next to the door, and I notice a secretary typing away on a keyboard and staring at a computer screen.
My mom opens the door and I go in, glad to be away from all those kids.
I don't like attention, at all.
Although, I do seem to attract it, seeing as my appearance is kind of um… distracting when you first see me. My skin is pale, and I have emerald green eyes. I wear band T-shirts and things like that, with randomly colored belts, different colored skinny jeans, and bright converse. I put on my makeup depending on my outfit, so sometimes it'll be all rainbow and sparkly, and other times it'll be dark and brooding.
I think my hair is what attracts the most attention though… It's long and curly and goes down to the middle of my back. And there's neon streaks. Not just one color neon streaks, but multiple colors going all through my hair.
So yeah…
I think I'm pretty bright and distracting.
"How may I help you today?" The secretary person says, looking at me and my mom.
I zone out as my mom starts saying whatever she's saying, and I'm sort of confused when we're being led out by some old guy in a suit.
When he starts talking about the school and stuff, I can only guess he's either the Headmaster…
But you never know.
*****
Throughout the whole tour, I was completely zoned out and thinking about Taylor Lautner's abs in New Moon, when my mom jolts me out of my daze by grabbing my arm and yanking me to the door.
"Jeez mom, what's the rush?" I whine as she pulls me along behind her, out the school doors and towards her car.
"There's no rush, I just want to shop."As always.
"Whatever." We get in the car and buckle up, and soon my mom is pulling out of the parking lot and back onto the road. Before I know it, we're in the parking lot of a furniture store.
Yet again, my mom pulls me behind her as she walks towards the doors, and soon we're inside.
****
By the time we're done shopping, it's already six at night, and we've picked out everything we need for the living room, kitchen, dining room (that we'll probably never use), and anything else we needed for our rooms or something.
All of the stuff is being delivered at some point this week, so all we have to do is wait.
The minute I walk into our house, I head up to my room so I can get my stuff organized for school tomorrow. While we were out, my mom also bought me my binders, folders, paper, pens, pencils and things like that for school.
"Hey Selena, I'm going to go grocery shopping before the store closes, I'll be back soon!" She calls up after me and I wave her off.
I enter my room, locking the doors behind me, and drop my bag of newly bought stuff on the table in the little alcove area.
Before I start getting everything organized, I get ready for bed. I take a quick shower, get dressed in my pajamas, and somewhat dry my hair before I walk over and sit down in one of the chairs.
I dump everything out onto the table and start putting paper into the binders I got, and filling up my pencil case thing with pencils, pens, erasers and flash cards. I don't know what I'm going to need at that school, so it's good to be prepared.
When I'm finally done, I shove everything into my messenger bag. Glancing at the clock, I see that it's around seven fifteen. I rub my eyes, surprisingly tired, even though we didn't really do that much today.
I turn off the lamps I had turned on, and then plug in my I-pod. Pressing shuffle, I gradually fall asleep to the sounds of Innocence by Avril Lavigne.
****
In the morning, I wake up and my face my first thought of the day.
School. How freaking fun.
